Garrison Chapel Cemetery Re-Visit

We stopped at Garrison Chapel Cemetery on Easter Sunday just to take a look around.  I snapped a few photos hoping that I didn't already have them from our last trip, but most of them I did.  Below are the ones that I didn't have.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of Charles J. Isom.
Born: 1834, Kentucky
Died: September 22, 1916, Monroe County, Indiana
He was the son of Charles N. Isom (1794-1855) and Margaret A. Rice Hendricks (1819-1884).  They are both buried in Garrison Chapel Cemetery.
He had at least one brother, but he may have also had a sister:
William Nelson Ison (1842-1936) -  buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana.
He was married to Rhoda Gardner Isom (1839-1880).  She is listed as being buried in Arthur Cemetery in Greene County, Indiana, though I am not sure if this is correct.
They had at least one child:
Minnie Ardella Isom Hamm (1871-1944) - buried in Garrison Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Our last stop is at the grave of Nancy E. Carter.

Born: August 10, 1880
Died: March 13, 1916

Underneath her name is that of Opal Carter.

Born: June 13, 1909
Died: March 13, 1910

It looks as if there may have been a headstone photo at one time, but there is nothing there now.

I hope that you have enjoyed your walk through Garrison Chapel Cemetery, even if it was a short one.

Please let me know if you have any questions or information.

Richland Cemetery Re-Visit

We decided to take another trip to Richland Cemetery on Easter Sunday after being unable to find another cemetery out in that area.

Our original purpose in stopping at this cemetery was to locate the grave of Moses Hall, a Revolutionary War Veteran, which we did find but it was in such a sad state of disrepair I didn't bother with any pictures beyond the ones that I already had.  So, while we were there, we decided to go ahead and take a walk around before heading back into town.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of Nancy Agnes Snoddy Hall.
Born: April 5, 1763, Rowan County, North Carolina
Died: April 14, 1855, Monroe County, Indiana
She was the wife of Moses Hall (1760-1846).  He was a Revolutionary War Veteran and is buried next to her in Richland Cemetery.
They had many children:
William Hall (1793-1819) - unknown
Samuel Snoddy Hall (1796-1885) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Elizabeth Hall (1798-1863) - unknown
Moses Hall (1802-1877) - buried in Richland Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Nancy Hall (1802-1819) - unknown
Malinda Hall (1805-1819) - unknown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Constance Bennington Nesbit.

Born: July 20, 1767, Harford County, Maryland
Died: October 14, 1854

She was the daughter of William Bennington (?-?) and Isabella Wilson Bennington (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they are buried.

She was married to Thomas Byron Nesbit (1769-1861) on December 14, 1790 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.  He is buried near her in Richland Cemetery.

They had eight children:
Susannah Nesbit Mathers (1791-1873) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Jane Nesbit Mathers (1793-1885) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
William Nesbit (?-?) - unknown
Rachel Nesbit Foster (1799-1874) - buried in Richland Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
John Nesbit (?-?) - unknown
Davd Nesbit (?-?) - unknown
Thomas Nesbit, Jr. (1805-1873) - buried in Slippery Point Cemetery, Jefferson County, Indiana.
Sarah Nesbit (?-?) - unknown

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here we have the grave of Thomas Byron Nesbit.
Born: April 10, 1769, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
Died: September 12, 1861, Monroe County, Indiana
His parents names are unknown, but we do know that his father was killed by Indians and died in Kentucky.
He was married to Constance Bennington Nesbit (1767-1854) on December 14, 1790 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
They had eight children:
Susannah Nesbit Mathers (1791-1873) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Jane Nesbit Mathers (1793-1885) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
William Nesbit (?-?) - unknown
Rachel Nesbit Foster (1799-1874) - buried in Richland Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
John Nesbit (?-?) - unknown
Davd Nesbit (?-?) - unknown
Thomas Nesbit, Jr. (1805-1873) - buried in Slippery Point Cemetery, Jefferson County, Indiana.
Sarah Nesbit (?-?) - unknown
They came to Indiana from Kentucky, purchasing land in Monroe County on Richland Creek.  Their log cabin home was used for church services until the church was built in 1838.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Our final stop is at this headstone.  The name is shown as Catharine, but the stone is broken and in need of repair.  The only Catharine I can find in the interment records that doesn't have a corresponding headstone is Catherine Burks McHaley (1840-1863).  I am not sure if this is the same person or not.

Mostly, I took this picture because of the headstone imagery.  I have seen a hand with the finger pointing up numerous times.  It means "Going Home".  But I have not seen one where the finger is pointing up toward a crown.

Hopefully, one day someone will repair the headstone and I will be able to determine who it belongs to.

I hope that you have enjoyed your walk through Richland Cemetery.

Rose Hill Cemetery Re-Visit

We decided to head up to Rose Hill Cemetery on Easter Sunday to talk a walk in the lovely weather.   We always love Rose Hill as it is such a beautiful place to just relax and look around.

As we walked, I snapped some pictures hoping that I didn't already have them in my vast collection of Rose Hill images and as luck would have it, I didn't!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of Amzi Atwater.
Born: November 9, 1839, Mantua, Ohio
Died: March 20, 1919, Bloomington, Indiana
He served in the Civil War in 1864.  He enlisted for a 100 day service in the 132nd Indiana Regiment under Colonel Vance.  After his service in the war was ended he came home to Indianapolis.  In 1882, he made a trip to Europe where he visited the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum and climbed Mount Vesuvius.   Later he returned via a week trip to England.  In 1904 he became a professor of Latin at Indiana University, though it was an emeritus status that had no salary.  His last duty at the university was to deliver the baccalaureate on June 19, 1904.  In 1905, he and other citizens formed the Monroe County Historical Society.  By 1913, he spent most of his days at home with his books and occasionally delivering a sermon at the nearby Christian Church.
He was married to Cortentia Candance Munsion Atwater (1838-1919) on August 8, 1870 in Mentor, Ohio.  She is buried with him at Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.
She is the daughter of Edward Spencer Munson (1808-1873) and Sophia Cowee Munson (1810-?) who are descended from the Munson family of Connecticut.  They were close friends of the Garfield family of whom President James Garfield was a member of.  Both are buried in Mentor Municipal Cemetery, Mentor, Lake County, Ohio.
She had one younger brother:
Spencer Munson (?-?) - buried in Mentor Municipal Cemetery, Lake County, Ohio.
They had two children:
Eva Munson (?-?) - unknown (died in infancy)
Munson D. Atwater (1873-1931) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
You can read more about him here.
At the bottom of this monument is listed Infant Axtell.
Born: November 9, 1884
Died: ?
This is the infant daughter of William Frank Axtell (1855-1935) and Clara Catherine Bollenbacher Axtell (1854-1953).  It is likely that she died as a newborn.  Both of her parents are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Washington, Daviess County, Indiana.
Our first name is Jane Wylie Axtell.
Born: January 9, 1872, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
