Oak Grove Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Oak Grove Cemetery in Springville, Lawrence County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 38.9485130, -86.6175079

This small cemetery has 113 interments and is situated next to the Oak Grove Pentecost Church.  This is a much newer cemetery than ones I usually frequent as the oldest burials are three children from the 1950s.

Diana Gale Arthur - b. and d. May 4, 1957
Danny Leroy Flynn - b. April 1, 1952; d. April 2, 1952
Michael Duane Phillips - b. and d. October 28, 1955

I found it rather unusual that the first three burials for five years were all infants.  I didn't, however, take photos of the graves since the cemetery is much newer.

All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.0904700, -86.5173900

This cemetery is located on Fairfax Road next to the All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church.  It is a newer cemetery, having been founded in 2007.   It is a nice setting with only 15 burials.  The property is located on the site of where the old Rooftop Quarry was once located.  Several trails weave around behind the church and lead to spots where there are still small quarry ponds.  There are even some ruins of old quarry buildings.

The Rooftop Quarry is best known for its appearance in the iconic 1979 movie "Breaking Away".  But, due to safety concerns and years of trespassing, the quarry was made inaccessible in 2018.  Now, whether or not it was filled in or just made harder to get to is the question.  Regardless, it is a dangerous area, located on private property belonging to the Indiana Limestone Company and the Church.

As far as the cemetery is concerned, I did not take any photos of the graves out of respect for the living relatives.  I did, however, feel that a general photo and an entry on my blog was a good idea, just for reference.

The Current Situation and going to Cemeteries

With the world in a tumble from COVID-19, we are all wanting to participate in social distancing.  Some of us must due to already fragile immune systems, while others are being forced into it by our employers.  The idea of staying away from people in order to not become ill is one that is difficult.  People, by nature, want to be around others.  But in this time, we cannot.  In light of the current health crisis, getting outside is a wise idea.  Being in nature is good for your mood and a nice way to be away from others.  Now is a great time to go to cemeteries.  And I plan to.  I hope to get to some in a nearby county soon.  Please check back and stay safe and well.  We are all in this together and we shall prevail.

Take care of yourselves out there.  Wash your hands, use cleaners and be safe.

Best Wishes.
