Campbell-Smith Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Campbell-Smith Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.0924990, -86.5592190

This tiny cemetery is located on the corner of Victor Pike and Dillman Road, enclosed by a chainlink fence.  There is the remains of a house foundation just behind it and an old barn. I am not sure if those places have any relation to those buried in the cemetery or not.  There are only about 20 markers or so, some fieldstone with no markings, but the corner that has been fenced in is quite large.  There may actually be more graves, but it was hard to determine if the depressions in the ground were those of unmarked graves or just from animals digging and the ground sinking.

Foddrill Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Foddrill Cemetery in Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.0252900, -86.6695100

This cemetery has a total of 9 known interments, though it is in such a state of disrepair that I only found 6 headstones and one fieldstone.  It is overgrown with rose bushes and situated in the middle of a corn field in a grove of trees.  I probably would have never found this cemetery had it not been for a tip off from a friend of mine that lives in the area.

~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of young Gladys Clendenen.
Born: October 30, 1887, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: December 14, 1892, Monroe County, Indiana
She was the daughter of Robert Josephus Clendening (1857-1945) and Margaret Ann Foddrill Clendening (1857-1920).  They are both buried up the road at Carmichael Cemetery, which is actually located in Greene County, Indiana.
Here is the grave of Nannie Cracraft.
Born: August 28, 1852
I have no information on her family at this time.
~~~~

This is the grave of Charles M. Foddrill.
Born: November 19, 1809, North Carolina
Died: August 19, 1899, Monroe County, Indiana

He was the son of John Foddrill (1784-1867) and Elizabeth Magdaline Baker Foddrill (1787-1867).  They are both buried near him in Foddrill Cemetery.

He had a few siblings:
Henry J. Foddrill (1818-1902) - buried in Foddrill Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana
John B. Foddrill (1826-1880) - unknown
Sally Foddrill Dugger (?-?) - unknown
Mary Foddrill Combs (?-?) - unknown

He was married to Lydia Margaret Carmichael Foddrill (1828-1865) in 1856.  She was born in Munse's Creek, Surry, North Carolina and is buried in Oliphant-Hobbieville, Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana.  Now I found some confusion here due to a listing in a Graves Family Genealogy.    According to their information, Lydia was married to John B. Foddrill, who is also Charles' brother and John, Sr's son. I haven't been able to find any information for a burial site for John B. Foddrill. There are children listed for them and none of them match the name of the child that I have listed below for Lydia and Charles. It's rather confusing, but I am going to list the information here as well just in case something comes to light in the future.

They had four children, but I only have the name of one:
Margaret Ann Foddrill Clendening (1857-1920) - buried in Carmichael Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR LYDIA (as mentioned above):
According to a Graves Family Genealogy, I the following information about Lydia.

She was listed as having been married to John B. Foddrill (1826-1880).  He was born in North Carolina and died in Monroe County, Indiana, though I haven't been able to locate his burial site.  They are listed as having been married on June 27, 1850 in Monroe County, Indiana.  I did find this listing in the marriage records for Monroe County.  I did NOT however find a listing for Lydia and Charles.  They could have been married in North Carolina before the family made the trek to Indiana, but I didn't find his name mentioned in the North Carolina records either.

She is incorrectly listed as having been buried in Teague Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana.  I could not find her there, but her headstone has been photographed in Oliphant-Hobbieville Cemetery in Greene County, which is not that far away.

They are listed as having the following children:
Francis M. Foddrill (1851-1910) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Clear Creek, Monroe County, Indiana
John Wesley Foddrill (1853-?) - unknown
Elizabeth Magelinne Foddrill Ferguson (1856-1927) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
James R. Foddrill (1857-?) - unknown
Martha V. Foddrill Smith (1864-1920) - unknown
William H. Foddrill (1868-1933) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana

John married a second time, after Lydia passed away.  His second wife was Catherine E. Graves Foddrill (1843-1920). She is buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana.

She was the daughter of Captain Thomas Peter Graves (1814-1887) and Mary "Anna" Ann Teague Graves (1816-1902).  They were married on January 12, 1834.  He is buried in Miriam Cemetery, Maryville, Nodaway County, Missouri, while she is buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana

They are listed as having had the following children:
Mattie Foddrill (?-?) - unknown
Martha V. Foddrill Gillham (1865-1935) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana
William Holt Foddrill (1868-1933) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana
Nancy A. Foddrill (1870-?) - unknown
Mary "Mollie" Ellen Foddrill Sullivan Carmichael (1872-1971) - buried in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Concord, Contra Costa County, California
Everett Emmet Foddrill (1883-1944) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg. Monroe County, Indiana

It's all very confusing to read through and attempt to decipher, but I can't really find anything relating Charles and Lydia except for the children.  I doubt that they were both married to her since it would have had to been at the same time and there are no divorces that I have been able to find.

If anyone has any further information, please let me know.  I would love to be able to clear this up.

Here is the grave of Henry J. Foddrill.
Born: April 5, 1818, Stokes County, North Carolina

He was the son of John Foddrill (1784- 1867) and Elizabeth Magdaline Baker Foddrill (1787-1867).  They are both buried near him in Foddrill Cemetery.

He had a few siblings:
Charles M. Foddrill (1809-1899) - buried in Foddrill Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana

Her name is listed next to his on the headstone, though it is getting harder to read.

Franklin "Frank" A. Foddrill (1866-1950) - buried in Solsberry Cemetery, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana
Martha Alice Foddrill Gray (1872-1964) - buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana
Isaac E. Foddrill (1876-1962) - buried in IOOF Riverview Cemetery, Monticello, White County, Indiana

~~~~
Our final stop is at the grave of John Foddrill.
Born: January 22, 1784 (possibly February 17, 1784), Pennsylvania
Died: September 3, 1867, Indiana
His parents were Charles Foddrill (1745-?) and Mary Foddrill (1777-?) .  He was born in either Patrick County, Virginia or Surrey County, North Carolina.  I am unsure as to where either of them are buried.
He was married to Elizabeth Magdaline Baker Foddrill, whose name is listed below his.
Born: May 16, 1787 (possibly November 18, 1786), Stokes County, North Carolina
Died: September 4, 1867
They were married in 1806 in North Carolina.
Her father was Henry Baker (1755-1838) and Elizabeth Baker (?-?).  He is buried in Burch Cemetery, but her gravesite is unknown.
She had several siblings:
Henry Baker (1783-1849) - buried in Prowsville Cemetery, Washington County, Indiana (I am unsure about this relation as he is not listed with the other children in his will)
Docia Baker Smith (1784-1814) - unknown
John B. Foddrill (1826-1880) - unknown
Sally Foddrill Dugger (?-?) - unknown
Mary Foddrill Combs (?-?) - unknown
Finally, there is this unmarked fieldstone.  I am still searching records and maybe I will get lucky enough to find out who this belongs to.
Mount Salem Cemetery
Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Mount Salem Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.
GPS Coordinates:  39.0785500, -86.5406910
This small cemetery has about 90 interments, though there may be more.  It is in a terrible state of disrepair and neglect.  Many of the stones are broken beyond repair and others are completely illegible.  The cemetery itself may be on private property, but I am unsure.  There was a small sign, but it was hard to tell if it was referring to the field next to it or to the cemetery.  The gate was open and there is a small parking area.  No one was around, so I took the opportunity to run in and take a few pictures.
I have been looking for this cemetery since 2015 and have been unable to locate it.  As I was driving past, I noticed a chain link fence on one side that was broken and falling down.  I remembered seeing this in another picture of the cemetery, so I knew that I must have finally been in the right place.  Pulling in and parking was not hard, though I didn't go far as it was rather mushy that day.  It started sleeting and the sound of the tiny ice pellets hitting the dead leaves was disconcerting.  The entire area was very uncomfortable, as if I could hear the cries for help from those buried there.  It is a sad, sad place.
Nearby, possibly in the woods, would have been the Mount Salem Church erected somewhere around 1825.  It was a Methodist church, and according to the History of Lawrence and Monroe Counties, by Charles Blanchard, "...was famous in its early days for its revivals of power and attendance from far and near."  It was eventually divided and the congregation moved on.  What happened to the church itself is not listed. Many of the burials here are said to have been those of workers and families in the nearby limestone quarries, though several were also farmers and the like.
There are 90 listed interments, though there are probably more as there are several depressions and a large area with no visible stones.
He was the son of Thomas Hill (1777-1850) and Millek/Mellick Susan Hill (1779-1854).  Thomas was born in Maryland, while Millek was born in North Carolina.  Both are buried nearby in Mount Salem Cemetery.
He had a couple siblings that I have found:
Eleanor Hill Wooden (1804-1880) - buried in Ketcham Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Hugh G. Hill (1809-1864) - buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Lawrence County, Illinois
He was married to Charity Wright Hill (1804-1876).  She is buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana
We now stop at the grave of Millek/Mellick Susan Hill.
Born: June 28, 1779, North Carolina
Died: October 14, 1854, Monroe County, Indiana
She was the wife of Thomas Hill (1777-1850).  He is buried near her in Mount Salem Cemetery.
They had at least three children that I have found:
Basil Hill (1802-1866) - buried in Mount Salem Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Eleanor Hill Wooden (1804-1880) - buried in Ketcham Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Hugh G Hill (1809-1864) - buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Lawrence County, Illinois
Sophia Hill (1812-?) - unknown
I have also found a reference to a son named Isaac Hill born in 1789.  This would make Millek only 9 years old.  I don't believe that this is an accurate reference as it would have made Thomas 12 and Millek 9.
We now come to the grave of James Mitchell, Sr..
Born: October 14, 1767, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania
Died: June 9, 1846, Monroe, Adams County, Indiana
He was the son of Abraham Thomas Mitchell, Sr. (1736-1806) and Mary Piffits/Piffets Mitchell (1736-1787).  They were married in Burlington County, New Jersey on January 1, 1757.  He is said to have been buried in the Mitchell Farm which was located near the Guilford County Courthouse.  His actual burial site is unknown, though burial on a family farm is not uncommon.  Her burial site was probably at the same location, though there is no information for this.
He had twelve siblings:
Issac Mitchell (1757-?) - unknown
Levi Mitchell (1759-1848) - unknown (a note that I have found lists him dying in the Revolution, but this seems inaccurate).
Rebecca Mitchell (1760-?) - unknown
Abraham Mitchell (1761-1856) - buried in the Old Mitchell Burial Ground, Peerless, Lawrence County, Indiana (the stone was removed by a family member and later returned, but then stolen.  It is now lost.)
Samuel Mitchell (1770-1809) - unknown
Robert Mitchell (1775-1845) - unknown
Thomas Mitchell (1776-1825) - unknown
Theopilus Mitchell (1777-1782) - unknown (died in the Revolution has been noted on a geneaology but that seems a little odd since he would have only been 5 years old.  Then again, these dates may not be right)
Isaac Mitchell (1783-1858) - unknown
Levi Mitchell (1784-1852) - unknown
Robert Mitchell (1786-1856) - unknown
Alexander Wright Mitchell (1787-1853) - buried in Tanksley Cemetery, Lawrence County, Indiana
He was married to Nancy Jane Campbell Mitchell (1771-1844) in 1791 in Virginia when she was 20 years old.  She is buried next to him in Mount Salem Cemetery.  It is listed that she died in Monroe City, but that makes little sense as that would be far away from where they were buried.
They are listed as having eleven children:
James Mitchell, Jr. (1793-1860) - unknown
Joseph Mitchell (1794-1861) - buried in Chariton Cemetery, Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa
Elizabeth Mitchell Bails (1796-1833) - unknown
Jane Mitchell (1799-1833) - unknown
Margaret "Peggy" Mitchell (1799-1879) - unknown
John Mitchell (1809-1896) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Clear Creek, Monroe County, Indiana
George Mitchell (1813-1884) - unknown
Thomas J. Mitchell (1813-1887) - unknown
Nancy Mitchell Finley (1816-1900) - buried in Smithville Christian Church Cemetery, Smithville, Monroe County, Indiana
He we are at the grave of Nancy Jane Campbell Mitchell.
Born: June 25, 1771, Orange County, Virginia
Died: October 10, 1844, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
She was the daughter of Patrick Campbell (1726-1799) and Elizabeth James Campbell (1745-1830).  They were Irish immigrants.  There is a note in a family geneaology that lists Elizabeth's birthplace as Chongping, China, though I am more inclined to believe other notes that say Augusta County, Virginia.  She died in Perry County, Kentucky and is noted as having been buried in the Campbell Cemetery, though so far I haven't had any luck locating it or her.  He was born in Kilmachrenan, Donegal, Ireland and died in Muhlenburg, Kentucky.  I also have not found his burial site.
Her mother is noted as having been a cousin of Jesse James.  I haven't found anything to say otherwise.
She had two brothers:
William Campbell (1763-1823) - buried in Campbell's Hill Gravesite, Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky. (it is noted on his headstone that he is a direct descendant of Colin, sixth Duke of Argyle)
David S. Campbell (1773-1853) - buried in Liberty Methodist Cemetery, Mount Tabor, Monroe County, Indiana
She married James Mitchell in 1791 in Virginia when she was 20 years old.
They had eleven children:
James Mitchell, Jr. (1793-1860) - unknown
Joseph Mitchell (1794-1861) - buried in Chariton Cemetery, Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa
According to her obituary from September 22, 1911, she went to the hospital for an operation to repair a rupture, but gangrene had set in and she passed away soon after.
This venerable gentleman lived to be 116 years old!  In an age where one was lucky to live into childhood, this is quite an accomplishment.  An article attached to his entry on Find-A-Grave notes that he was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and was an eyewitness to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781.
