Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Mount Salem Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.

This small cemetery has about 90 interments, though there may be more. It is in a terrible state of disrepair and neglect. Many of the stones are broken beyond repair and others are completely illegible. The cemetery itself may be on private property, but I am unsure. There was a small sign, but it was hard to tell if it was referring to the field next to it or to the cemetery. The gate was open and there is a small parking area. No one was around, so I took the opportunity to run in and take a few pictures.
I have been looking for this cemetery since 2015 and have been unable to locate it. As I was driving past, I noticed a chain link fence on one side that was broken and falling down. I remembered seeing this in another picture of the cemetery, so I knew that I must have finally been in the right place. Pulling in and parking was not hard, though I didn't go far as it was rather mushy that day. It started sleeting and the sound of the tiny ice pellets hitting the dead leaves was disconcerting. The entire area was very uncomfortable, as if I could hear the cries for help from those buried there. It is a sad, sad place.
Nearby, possibly in the woods, would have been the Mount Salem Church erected somewhere around 1825. It was a Methodist church, and according to the History of Lawrence and Monroe Counties, by Charles Blanchard, "...was famous in its early days for its revivals of power and attendance from far and near." It was eventually divided and the congregation moved on. What happened to the church itself is not listed. Many of the burials here are said to have been those of workers and families in the nearby limestone quarries, though several were also farmers and the like.

He is said to have been buried in the Mitchell Farm which was located near the Guilford County Courthouse. His actual burial site is unknown, though burial on a family farm is not uncommon. Her burial site was probably at the same location, though there is no information for this.

She was the daughter of Patrick Campbell (1726-1799) and Elizabeth James Campbell (1745-1830). They were Irish immigrants. There is a note in a family geneaology that lists Elizabeth's birthplace as Chongping, China, though I am more inclined to believe other notes that say Augusta County, Virginia. She died in Perry County, Kentucky and is noted as having been buried in the Campbell Cemetery, though so far I haven't had any luck locating it or her. He was born in Kilmachrenan, Donegal, Ireland and died in Muhlenburg, Kentucky. I also have not found his burial site.
Her mother is noted as having been a cousin of Jesse James. I haven't found anything to say otherwise.

This venerable gentleman lived to be 116 years old! In an age where one was lucky to live into childhood, this is quite an accomplishment. An article attached to his entry on Find-A-Grave notes that he was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and was an eyewitness to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781.
