Foddrill Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Foddrill Cemetery in Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.0252900, -86.6695100

This cemetery has a total of 9 known interments, though it is in such a state of disrepair that I only found 6 headstones and one fieldstone.  It is overgrown with rose bushes and situated in the middle of a corn field in a grove of trees.  I probably would have never found this cemetery had it not been for a tip off from a friend of mine that lives in the area.

Our first stop is at the grave of young Gladys Clendenen.
Born: October 30, 1887, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: December 14, 1892, Monroe County, Indiana

She was the daughter of Robert Josephus Clendening (1857-1945) and Margaret Ann Foddrill Clendening (1857-1920).  They are both buried up the road at Carmichael Cemetery, which is actually located in Greene County, Indiana.

She had several siblings:
Elsie Clendening Kirk (1883-1974) - buried in Carmichael Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana
Charles Todd Clenenning (1885-1961) - buried in Gross Cemetery, Whitehall, Owen County, Indiana
Vivian Clendening Robertson (1890-1965) - buried in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
Everett Clendening (1892-1964) - buried in Carmichael Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana
Mabel Clendening Snow Hawkins (1895-1960) - buried in Chambersville Cemetery, Spencer, Owen County, Indiana
Grace Ellen Clendening Franzmann (1898-1997) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
Strictland Clendening (?-?) - unknown
Charles Clendening (?-?) - unknown

Here is the grave of Nannie Cracraft.
Born: August 28, 1852
Died: August 28, 1876

I have no information on her family at this time.

This is the grave of Charles M. Foddrill.
Born: November 19, 1809, North Carolina
Died: August 19, 1899, Monroe County, Indiana

He was the son of John Foddrill (1784-1867) and Elizabeth Magdaline Baker Foddrill (1787-1867).  They are both buried near him in Foddrill Cemetery.

He had a few siblings:
Henry J. Foddrill (1818-1902) - buried in Foddrill Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana
John B. Foddrill (1826-1880) - unknown
Sally Foddrill Dugger (?-?) - unknown
Mary Foddrill Combs (?-?) - unknown

He was married to Lydia Margaret Carmichael Foddrill (1828-1865) in 1856.  She was born in Munse's Creek, Surry, North Carolina and is buried in Oliphant-Hobbieville, Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana.  Now I found some confusion here due to a listing in a Graves Family Genealogy.    According to their information, Lydia was married to John B. Foddrill, who is also Charles' brother and John, Sr's son. I haven't been able to find any information for a burial site for John B. Foddrill. There are children listed for them and none of them match the name of the child that I have listed below for Lydia and Charles. It's rather confusing, but I am going to list the information here as well just in case something comes to light in the future.

They had four children, but I only have the name of one:
Margaret Ann Foddrill Clendening (1857-1920) - buried in Carmichael Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR LYDIA (as mentioned above):
According to a Graves Family Genealogy, I the following information about Lydia.

She was listed as having been married to John B. Foddrill (1826-1880).  He was born in North Carolina and died in Monroe County, Indiana, though I haven't been able to locate his burial site.  They are listed as having been married on June 27, 1850 in Monroe County, Indiana.  I did find this listing in the marriage records for Monroe County.  I did NOT however find a listing for Lydia and Charles.  They could have been married in North Carolina before the family made the trek to Indiana, but I didn't find his name mentioned in the North Carolina records either.

She is incorrectly listed as having been buried in Teague Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana.  I could not find her there, but her headstone has been photographed in Oliphant-Hobbieville Cemetery in Greene County, which is not that far away.

They are listed as having the following children:
Francis M. Foddrill (1851-1910) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Clear Creek, Monroe County, Indiana
John Wesley Foddrill (1853-?) - unknown
Elizabeth Magelinne Foddrill Ferguson (1856-1927) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
James R. Foddrill (1857-?) - unknown
Martha V. Foddrill Smith (1864-1920) - unknown
William H. Foddrill (1868-1933) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana

John married a second time, after Lydia passed away.  His second wife was Catherine E. Graves Foddrill (1843-1920). She is buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana.

She was the daughter of Captain Thomas Peter Graves (1814-1887) and Mary "Anna" Ann Teague Graves (1816-1902).  They were married on January 12, 1834.  He is buried in Miriam Cemetery, Maryville, Nodaway County, Missouri, while she is buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana

They are listed as having had the following children:
Mattie Foddrill (?-?) - unknown
Martha V. Foddrill Gillham (1865-1935) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana
William Holt Foddrill (1868-1933) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana
Nancy A. Foddrill (1870-?) - unknown
Mary "Mollie" Ellen Foddrill Sullivan Carmichael (1872-1971) - buried in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Concord, Contra Costa County, California
Everett Emmet Foddrill (1883-1944) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg. Monroe County, Indiana

It's all very confusing to read through and attempt to decipher, but I can't really find anything relating Charles and Lydia except for the children.  I doubt that they were both married to her since it would have had to been at the same time and there are no divorces that I have been able to find.

If anyone has any further information, please let me know.  I would love to be able to clear this up.

Our final stop is at the grave of John Foddrill.
Born: January 22, 1784 (possibly February 17, 1784), Pennsylvania
Died: September 3, 1867, Indiana

His parents were Charles Foddrill (1745-?) and Mary Foddrill (1777-?) .  He was born in either Patrick County, Virginia or Surrey County, North Carolina.  I am unsure as to where either of them are buried.

He was married to Elizabeth Magdaline Baker Foddrill, whose name is listed below his.
Born: May 16, 1787 (possibly November 18, 1786), Stokes County, North Carolina
Died: September 4, 1867

They were married in 1806 in North Carolina.

Her father was Henry Baker (1755-1838) and Elizabeth Baker (?-?).  He is buried in Burch Cemetery, but her gravesite is unknown.

She had several siblings:
Henry Baker (1783-1849) - buried in Prowsville Cemetery, Washington County, Indiana (I am unsure about this relation as he is not listed with the other children in his will)
Docia Baker Smith (1784-1814) - unknown
Nancy Baker Cannon (1792-1884) - buried in Bowen Cemetery, Audobon, Audobon County, Iowa
Tansey Baker Gentry (1800-1895) - unknown
Absalom Baker (1802-1869) - buried in Burch Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana
Sarah Baker Tilley (1804-1883) - buried in Tilley-Youngman Cemetery, Bethany, Harrison County, Missouri

She and John had two children:
Charles M. Foddrill (1809-1899) - buried in Foddrill Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana
Henry J. Foddrill (1818-1902) - buried in Foddrill Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe County, Indiana
John B. Foddrill (1826-1880) - unknown
Sally Foddrill Dugger (?-?) - unknown
Mary Foddrill Combs (?-?) - unknown

Finally, there is this unmarked fieldstone.  I am still searching records and maybe I will get lucky enough to find out who this belongs to.

I hope that you have enjoyed your walk through Foddrill Cemetery.

Visit the listing at Find-A-Grave. Please note that there is at least one other entry labeled Fodrill Cemetery.  This is a misspelling of the cemetery above. and is a duplicate entry.
