Rose Hill Cemetery Re-Visit and Storm Damage

 Hello all!  Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is a little different than normal.  In late June this year, we had a powerful storm come through Monroe County, Indiana.  We had tornado strength straight line winds that caused massive damage to trees and buildings around the county and in at least one neighboring county.  The National Weather service classified this storm as a derecho:

From Wikipedia:

"A derecho (/ˈdɛrətʃoʊ/, from Spanish: derecho [deˈɾetʃo], 'straight') is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system.

Derechos cause hurricane-force winds, heavy rains, and flash floods. In many cases, convection-induced winds take on a bow echo (backward "C") form of squall line, often forming beneath an area of diverging upper tropospheric winds, and in a region of both rich low-level moisture and warm-air advection. Derechos move rapidly in the direction of movement of their associated storms, similar to an outflow boundary (gust front), except that the wind remains sustained for a greater period of time (often increasing in strength after onset), and may reach tornado and hurricane-force winds. A derecho-producing convective system may remain active for many hours and, occasionally, over multiple days.

A warm-weather phenomenon, derechos mostly occur in summer, especially during June, July, and August in the Northern Hemisphere..."

The storm was massive, from what I understand it started over in Iowa somewhere and just moved across the Midwest finally losing power somewhere in, I think, Ohio.   Monroe County was declared a disaster zone with hundreds of trees down, blocking roads all over the county.  Many people lost power for a week or more.  I was leaving work when it hit and got stuck sitting in a parking lot watching the trees leaning at a 45 degree angle.  Several power transformers across the road from where I was sitting exploded, lighting up the sky with an orange ball of flame.  That was the first power outage I became aware of.  Friends of mine who live in that area showed me videos of the power transformers lying in the street, flames shooting out of them.

It took me two and a half hours to make the 20 minute drive home.  There was so much damage everywhere.  Thankfully, where I live in the far south side of the county, we didn't lose power and had very little tree damage.  Unfortunately, Rose Hill Cemetery got hit pretty hard.  If you've seen my video of Rose Hill or any of my other posts, or if you have been there, you know that there are some beautiful. old trees there, especially up in the Spencer Addition.  We lost one of those during this storm and part of another.

This is one of the old pine trees up by the main road that separated The Old Spencer Addition and the Spencer Addition.  It was just snapped at the base and laid over.  Luckily, none of the stones underneath it took any damage.

This stone was just nestled in amongst the broken branches of the old pine tree, waiting to be rescued.

This tree, in the Spencer Addition, snapped in two and hit the stones beneath it displacing the stone from its base.  It also knocked down and obelisk stone nearby.   There was another tree that came down in the newer additions of Rose Hill that knocked over another couple of stones, but those pictures came out too blurry, so I just deleted them.

But while we were there, we were showing a friend some interesting stones, looking for history.  I decided to go ahead and photograph some of those stones.

Lucas Cemetery Re-Visit

 Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is a quick re-visit to Lucas Cemetery.  I got an email requested some photos of Veteran's headstones since there was a long list of burials and a short list of headstones.  My daughter and I decided to head that way since it isn't too far from where we live.

I photographed all of the veteran's headstones that I could find, which weren't as many as I had hoped.  I also snagged a couple of additional headstone photos that I didn't remember from our previous trip, though that was nine years ago and I have a terrible memory.

Lucas Cemetery is an active cemetery located in Monroe County, Indiana just off of Lucas Road.  You can check out my last post on this cemetery here.

This grave is curious as it is clearly hand carved with no information at all on it.

The opposite side of the stone is carved with P.C. Vaught, also with no information, though this appears to be carved with tools in a more professional way.

Who they are may never be known.

Our final stop at the grave of John W. Fender.
Born: July 31, 1844
Died: June 28, 1915

He was married twice, first to Rachel Jane Lucas Fender (1846-1914).  She was buried in Lucas Cemetery near him

I believe that they had three children:
William Ervin Fender (1867-1950) - buried in Lucas Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Morton David Fender (1871-1919) - buried in Lucas Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Mary Frances Fender Smiley (1875-1946) - buried in Lucas Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana

His second wife, whom he married on June 5, 1915, was Susan Mary Allen Sherrill Speer Pitcher Fender Deckard Martin (1863-1930).  She is buried in Judah Church of Christ Cemetery in Judah, Lawrence County, Indiana.

John Fender died just a few weeks after he and Susan were married when he was shot by his neighbor.  The dispute was over some bees belonging to John that had made a hive on a partition fence that separated the two properties.

Beech Grove Cemetery

 Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Beech Grove Cemetery in Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates:  38.85860, -86.49580

This is a large active cemetery just outside of downtown Bedford.  I haven't been able to figure out when it was established or, really, much information at all about the history of the cemetery.  It is a very lovely cemetery for the area that we drove around.  It was busy that day, so we didn't stick around for very long.  I took a few pictures near the entrance of the cemetery and the chapel.

The chapel is a bit of a mystery.  It was thought to have been a WPA project in the 1930s to be used as a public building.  Others have suggested that it may have been built during World War 1.  At this time, there is no concrete history of the building and the Lawrence County History Center is asking that anyone with any information to please contact them at president.lchgs@hpcisp.com.

Near the chapel is a very large, triangular shaped war memorial.  I snapped photos of the memorial, but not the single graves so I will be doing entries for as many as I can read.  As I noted earlier, it was busy that day and I didn't want to be in the way.

~~~
Our first stop is at a series of markers in the Veterans Memorial area. These are not burials, but instead markers to honor those that served and died.   Unfortunately, since these are only cenotaphs, there may be no information about them at all.
The first marker (furthest right) is for William Holt.  Next to him is Robert E. Harrell and next to him is Lyman Coen.  I can find a listing for a burial in Beech Grove for a William Asa Holt, but I am not sure that this is him as that particular burial doesn't show anything about any war service.  There are no listings in Beech Grove for either Robert E. Harrell of Lyman Coen.
This series of markers is for (farthest right to left): Garth C. Davis, Guy K. Davis, Gerald Woodruff, and William Groseback.
Guy K. Davis
Born: January 1, 1894, Oolitic, Lawrence County, Indiana
Died: November 2, 1918, France
He was awarded the distinguished service cross for his actions during World War I.  A letter from the President dated July 9, 1918, posthumously awarded this cross to Guy Davis for the following: "After his platoon sergeant had become a casualty, he assumed command and led his men with marked personal bravery and skill, advancing under fire until he was mortally wounded."  He served as a Corporal in Company F, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, American Expeditionary Forces in Villers-devant-Dun, France.
This series of markers is for (farthest right to left): Gerald Woodruff, William Groseback, Roy W. Barton and Grover Baldwin.
Grover Baldwin
Born: September 20, 1895, Mitchell, Lawrence County, Indiana
Died: October 14, 1918, France
His burial site is Freedom Cemetery, Mitchell, Lawrence County, Indiana.
This corner memorial is for Harley Halber Pope.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find any information about him at all.
This series of markers is for (farthest right to left): Curtis E. Bex, Dewey L. King, Fred Eugene Bosh.
There is no information for any of them.
This series of markers is for (farthest right to left): Sherman R. Hawk, Charles E. Head.
Unfortunately, I didn't take the picture at a very good angle, so I can't read the last three stones.
From left to right: John O. Nelson, Noble Blackwell.
Noble Blackwell
Born: April 22, 1896, Orleans, Orange County, Indiana
Died: October 7, 1918, Bret, Bretagne, France
He was the son of Robert Blackwell (1875-1961) and Lucy Dell Hall Blackwell (1872-1944).  His siblings included: Charlotte Mildred Blackwell Fender (1898-1979), Paul Francis Blackwell (1900-1974) and William Blackwell (1905-1980).  He entered into service on June 28, 1918 in the Radio Signal Corps, receiving his training at Purdue University.  He was assigned to the 13th Service Company.  While on board the ship, travelling across the Atlantic, he contracted influenza and died upon landing in France.
From right to left: Carl Edward Anderson, Noble Bridges, Maurice Fish, Chester Tucker.
Sergeant Carl Edward Anderson
Born: August 30, 1893, Clear Creek, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: December 18, 1918, Yaphank, Suffolk County, New York
His actual burial is in Clear Creek Cemetery, Clear Creek, Monroe County, Indiana.
Private Noble Bridges.
Born: February 20, 1896, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana
Died: October 7, 1918, Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio
He was the son of William Edgar Bridges (1869-1938) and Flora Wood Corbin Bridges (1873-1901).  His siblings include: Amy Gladys Bridges (1894-1894) and Freeland Bridges (1900-1979).  He was married to Ethel Grace Hainey Terrell (1897-1961) in 1915.  Noble was an employee of the Southeastern Railway Company before he entered service.  He was sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio where he was assigned to the 24th Company, 6th Training Battalion, 158th Depot Bridgade.  Before ever leaving Ohio, he contracted pneumonia and died.
From right to left: Roy E. Harding, Scott Wilbur Harvey, Paul Martin.
I didn't include the furthest right memorial as it is listed above.
From right to left: William Calomiris, John Johnston, Harry Alexander Niles, Hank M. Laux, R. N. Gyger
These are the photos that I took the day we were there.  So many of these men that served and died for our freedom are lost to memory.  Who were they?  Did they have families?  What did they enjoy doing in their free time?  We may never know.
~~~

Here is the memorial stone for Lieutenant Martin.
Born: unknown
Died: unknown

The stone is so weathered and worn that it is almost impossible to read.  It appears to say Lieutenant J.W. Martin, but I can't be sure.  It is likely a Civil War stone, but the company and regiment are worn down.  I searched through the cemetery records, but couldn't find a Martin buried there that served in the Civil War.

Breckenridge Cemetery

 Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Breckenridge Cemetery, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 38.88140, -86.48860

This cemetery is located on the side of the road on the way into Bedford from Peerless.  We found it rather by accident and it became necessary to stop.  It is a lovely little cemetery up on a hill with just over 400 interments, the latest within the last few years, so it is an active cemetery.  This cemetery has some very interesting history in the back corner that I will not go over in this blog post in detail.  It will be linked to a post on my sister blog, Our Historic Indiana.

They had one child:
Clifford Voyle Simpson (1912-1971) - buried in Beech Grove Cemetery, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana

The Bloomington Evening World, dated April 15, 1914 states "Postmaster J.T. Elias Williams (1845-1865) - buried in Alexandria National Cemetery, Alexandria, Alexandria City, Virginia (he served in the Civil War in Company C of the 28th USCI; died from inflammation of the lungs)

I did find some interesting information about Dive Williams.  He came to Lawrence County, Indiana in 1817, as a slave along with a woman named Nancy and an unnamed boy who died shortly after arriving.  Indiana was a free state, so they became freed slaves.  At this time, the custom was for the slaves to take the name of their master.  In this case, Williams as their master was Major Richard Williams and his wife, Elizabeth.  Richard and Dive would travel south frequently, taking wagonloads of produce to Louisville.  On one of these trips, Dive met Ruvina.  On their next trip they were married.  You can read more about them here.

We now stop at the grave of Private Richard Williams.
Born: October 16, 1747, Scotland
Died: January 16, 1827, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana

The names of his parents and siblings are unknown.  He was married twice, though those dates are also unknown.

He served in the Revolutionary War with the First Battalion of Orange County, North Carolina as a Private in the Company of Captain Willliam Williams, though I have also seen it listed as Colonel Ambrose Ramsey being in charge of this particular regiment.

He was first married to Elizabeth Morris Edwards Williams (1745-1827).  She is buried near him in Breckenridge Cemetery.

His second wife was Ruth Davis Edwards (1800-1864).  She is buried with her second husband in Center Edwards Cemetery in Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina.

He had four sons, though whose mother was whose, I am not sure:
John Williams (?-?) - burial unknown
Henry Williams (?-?) - burial unknown
Vinson Williams (1787-1864) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Curryville, Sullivan County, Indiana
Richard Williams (?-?) - burial unknown

I did find more names of children associated with his second wife that would line up with their marriage, but in the records, they are not listed as having come to Indiana with him, so I don't know if they stayed with their mother or not.  It's a little confusing.

When Richard came to Indiana in around 1816-1817, he had three slaves with him, Dive, Nancy and a little boy that died shortly after arriving.  Because Indiana was a free state, they became freed citizens.  Though at this time he was calling himself Major Williams.

As stated at the beginning of this post, there is some interesting history linked to the graveyard.  In the back corner is a shaded area with a large obelisk style stone that says "In Memory of the Unknown Dead".  This is referring to the 25 unknown Confederate Civil War soldiers buried here that were being held at Camp Lawrence.  As noted earlier, this will be detailed better in a post on Our Historic Indiana.
