Bingham Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Bingham Cemetery in Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.0663986, -86.7742004
This small cemetery has over one hundred interments and is still an active location, with most of the burials being members of the Bingham and Bays families.  It was established sometime in the 1820s.  It sits on the corner of a County Road 360 N and N. County Road 900 E and is surrounded by a chain link fence.  It is well-maintained and had been mowed recently.

Our first stop is at the grave of Hiram Bingham.
Born: 1810, Virginia
Died: 1863, Greene County, Indiana

He was the son of Frederick Bingham (1792-1859) and Obedience Powell Farmer Bingham (1789-1860).  They are both buried in Bingham Cemetery in Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana, though I didn't find a headstone for her.

He had a couple of siblings:
Eliza Ann Bingham Anderson (1821-1912) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana
Alfred Bingham (1829-1902) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana

He was married to Sarah H. Uland Bingham (1819-1892).  She was born in Halifax County, Virginia, but died in Greene County, Indiana.  She is listed on the headstone with Hiram, though her birth and death dates are not carved in.

She was the daughter of Jonas Uland (1791-1835) and Elizabeth S. Bingham Uland Buffalo (1796-1846).  They were buried on August 16, 1813 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.  His burial site is unknown though he is thought to have been buried in Tennessee, somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  He was on the way to Greene County, Indiana with his family and died somewhere near the Poplar Camp.  This left Elizabeth and their children to make the trip alone.  She is said to be buried in Old Ridgeport Cemetery, Ridgeport, Greene County, Indiana.

She had several siblings:
John B. Uland (1815-1863) - buried in Bays Cemetery, Solsberry, Green County, Indiana
Jonas Uland (1819-1900) - buried in Andrew Livingston Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana
William S. Uland (1821-1895) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana
James Nelson Uland (1826-1910) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana
Fatha Ann Uland Anderson (1834-1906) - buried in Bingham Cemetery, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana
Mary Ann Buffalo Spelts (1837-1875) - buried in Scotts-Youtsey Cemetery, Clear Spring, Jackson County, Indiana
Bryant Buffalo (?-?) - unknown

Sarah and Hiram had several children:
Frederick Bingham (1840-1851) - buried in Bingham Cemetery, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana
Eliza Ann Bingham Cornelius (1845-1934) - buried in Oak Wood Cemetery, Pella, Marion County, Iowa

Here we have the grave of Major Frederick Bingham.
Born: February 22, 1792, Pittsylvania County, Virginia
Died: March 10, 1859, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana

He was the son of Edmond Bingham (1774-1852) and Lucy Bays Bingham (1774-1857).  They are both buried in Bingham Cemetery nearby, though I didn't find any headstones for them the day that we were there.  There were, however, some fieldstones with no carvings, so it's possible that one of those belonged to them.

He had several siblings:
Frederick Bingham (1792-1859) - buried in Bingham Cemetery, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana
Sarah E. Bingham Parsons Nichols (1795-1863) - buried in Dover Baptist Church Cemetery, White Plains, Surry County, North Carolina

Lucy Bingham Bays (1803-1882) - buried in Bingham Cemetery, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana
Edmond Bays Bingham (1805-1857) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana

He was married to Obedience Powell Farmer Bingham (1789-1860).  She is buried in Bingham Cemetery nearby, though she doesn't have a headstone.  It could, however, be one of the many fieldstones.

They had a few children:
Hiram Bingham (1810-1863) - buried in Bingham Cemetery, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana
Elizabeth "Eliza" Ann Bingham Anderson (1821-1912) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana
Alfred Bingham (1829-1902) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana
Edmund Bingham (1833-1863) - burial unknown (he was killed in the Civil War in Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi)
James Granville Bingham (1846-1914) - buried in Ridgeport Community Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana

In front of his headstone is this bronze plaque that states that he was a Fifer in the Virginia Militia in the War of 1812.  A family history states that Frederick's birthday is on the same day as that of George Washington.  You can read some more about him at his Find-A-Grave listing.
