Edwards Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Edwards Cemetery in Greene County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.0918600, -86.7006710

This is a small, active cemetery located off of Chapel Road in Greene County, Indiana.  It is fenced and situated right next to a railroad, which curved and ran just in front of a very large, old house next door.  That house was listed for sale the day that we were there and looked like it hadn't been lived in for a very long time.  The windows were boarded up, but there were cars there looking at it.  It was probably built sometime in the late 19th century.  The cemetery itself was established in 1834, with the burial of James Edwards on May 29, 1834.  He was less than two years old.

Our first stop is at the grave of Robert Bland.
Born: unknown
Died: unknown

He was the son of Grace Bland (?-?) and Harry Bland (?-?).  There is a Grace Bland buried nearby, but she is not listed as having been married to Harry.  I am not sure if this is the right Grace or not.  I haven't found out where Harry is buried, either.

~~~
Here we have the grave of Larry Chester Bond.
Born: October 2, 1940
Died: August 10, 1985
I normally wouldn't take pictures of a newer grave like this out of respect for the family, but it really caught my attention.  At the bottom of the headstone it says 'Special Agent of the FBI Mar 1966 - Aug 1985'.  By the date of his service in the FBI and the date of his death, it almost looks like he died on the job, but I am not sure.  I haven't found anything about him.
I am not going to list anything about his wife or children, since this is far newer.
~~~

We now come to the grave of James Addison Burch.
Born: August 24, 1913
Died: September 22, 1913

He was only a month old when he died and there is no information on his family.  He is the only Burch buried in Edwards Cemetery.  There is a Burch Cemetery in Monroe County, though I am not sure of any connection.

Here is the grave of Rachel Melvina Anderson Crismore.

William Henry Crismore (1858-1924) - buried in Chambersville Cemetery, Spencer, Owen County, Indiana
John W. Crismore (1863-1924) - buried in Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum, River Grove, Cook County, Illinois (His birth date on his headstone states 1865, but a family genealogy notes that his year of birth was 1863, possibly right around the time she passed away)

This is the grave of Nancy A. Dyer.
Born: February 20, 1869
Died: March 27, 1885

She was the young wife of James Dyer (?-?).  I am unsure as to where he is buried.  There are no other Dyer's in this cemetery.

She was the daughter of William Henry Burch (1744-1815) and Mary Ann Lawrence Burch (1740-1785).  They were married in 1763, probably in North Carolina, which is where they both died.  It is unknown where they were buried.

She had ten siblings, though some names are in dispute:

Here we have the grave of Laodicia "Dicy" Burch Edwards.
Born: March 12, 1814
Died: January 6, 1889

She was the daughter of James Phillip Burch (1777-1855) and Sarah "Sally" Gillespie Burch (1779-1869). They were married on June 1, 1801 (though I have also found the date of 1809) in Surry County, North Carolina and came to Greene County in early 1820.  I believe that she may have been his second wife, his first wife having been Sarah Whaley Burch (1780-1801).  They were married on June 25, 1795 in Surry County, North Carolina, but she died in 1801.  He was a farmer and they were both buried in Burch Cemetery #2, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana.

She had several siblings:
Barnibus Burch (1792/1795/1798-1862) - buried in Cason, Marvin Farm, Burns City, Cooke County, Texas (He was hanged in the "Great Hanging" at Gainesville, Texas; it is unlikely that he is the son of James and Sarah as James would have been 15 and Sarah would have been 13.  They weren't married until 1801 or 1809.  I believe that he is actually the son of James and his first wife, Sarah Whaley Burch (1777-1801).  They were married on June 25, 1795 in Surry County, North Carolina.)
Elijah Burch (1802-1863) - unknown
Tyre Burch (1804-1835) - buried in Burch Cemetery #2, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana
Mary Burch (1806-?) - unknown
Henry Burch (1809-?)  - unknown
James K./Phillip Burch II (1810-1897) - his burial is listed as unknown, but it is stated that he died in Roanoke County, Virginia.
Elisha Burch (1812-1888) - unknown
Delila Burch (1814-1815) - unknown
Patty Burch Ritter (1819-?) - unknown

She was the wife of George Edwards (1811-1888).  They were married on December 22, 1833 and he is buried near her in Edwards Cemetery.

They had many children:
James Edwards (1832-1834) - buried in Edwards Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana (this is the first burial in this cemetery)

Here we have the grave of Frank G. Edwards.
Born: June 8, 1880
Died: October 25, 1907

He was the son of William Anderson Edwards (1836-1908) and Mary Evelyn Breeden Edwards (1843-1884).  They are both buried nearby in Edwards Cemetery.

He had several siblings:
George Edwards (1871-1936) - buried in River Hill Cemetery, Spencer, Owen County, Indiana
Jennie D. Edwards Sparks (1872-1948) - buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa
Thomas Edwards (1872-1873) - buried in Edwards Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana
William E. Edwards (1876-1939) - buried in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Sheridan, Sheridan County, Wyoming
Charles "Charlie" E. Edwards (1878-1899) - buried in Edwards Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana
Mary D. Edwards (1882-1915) - buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa
Perry Robert Edwards (1884-1971) - buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa

An obituary for him states that he was employed with a railroad company when he suffered an attack of typhoid fever.  He recovered sufficiently to return home where he was well on his way to a full recovery.  Unfortunately, he ate something which perforated his digestive system and cause his untimely death.

He was also a teacher and taught in Center Beech Creek Townships as well as at Marco (I am unsure where this is).

The same obituary noted that the name of the cemetery was the Paris Edwards Cemetery.

Here is the grave of the Infant Daughter Edwards.
Born: June 15, 1857
Died: June 15, 1857

This was the infant daughter of George Edwards (1834-1864) and Sarah "Sallie" Edwards Edwards (1833-1910).  They were married on August 14, 1856 in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana.  She is buried in Edwards Cemetery nearby.  He, meanwhile, died in Resaca, Georgia during the Civil War.  I have not found mention of his burial place.

Had she survived, she would have had many siblings:
Samuel Harrison Edwards (1859-1914) - buried in Edwards Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana
William Asbury Edwards (1860-1860) - unknown
Sarah Elizabeth Edwards Abrams (1861-1935) - buried in Kaysville City Cemetery, Kaysville, Davis County, Utah
Child Edwards (1862-1864) - unknown
Infant Edwards (1864-1864) - buried in Edwards Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana

~~~
Here is the grave of another Infant Edwards.
Born: December 2, 1864
Died: December 10, 1864
This was the infant child of George Edwards (1834-1864) and Sarah "Sallie" Edwards Edwards (1833-1910).  They were married on August 14, 1856 in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana.  She is buried in Edwards Cemetery nearby.  He, meanwhile, died in Resaca, Georgia during the Civil War.  I have not found mention of his burial place.
Had this little one survived, there would have been many siblings:
Infant Edwards (1857-1857) - buried in Edwards Cemetery, Greene County, Indian
Samuel Harrison Edwards (1859-1914) - buried in Edwards Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana
William Asbury Edwards (1860-1860) - unknown
Sarah Elizabeth Edwards Abrams (1861-1935) - buried in Kaysville City Cemetery, Kaysville, Davis County, Utah
Child Edwards (1862-1864) - unknown
I noticed that the death date for the father and the child are only about seven months apart.  It is likely that this little one was conceived right before he left for war.
Here is the grave of Rosetta M. Whaley.
Born: June 26, 1874
Died: November 24, 1884
She was the daughter of J.M. Whaley (?-?) and M.S. Whaley (?-?).  I thought at first that she could have been the daughter of James Marion Whaley but the mother's initials aren't the same.  Therefore I am not sure who her parents were.
Our final stop is at the grave of Roxy Whaley.
Born: November 1, 1895
Died: December 3, 1895
I am unsure how she is related to any of the other Whaley's buried in Edwards Cemetery.
There is a bit of a mystery at Edwards Cemetery.  Just outside of the fence near the rail cut are some stones.  Two appear to be footstones, one with the initials, A.W. and another with the initials M.E.E.  There are graves in the cemetery with these initials, so it is very possible that these were stuck outside the fence to make space for graves or even to make it easier to do the grounds keeping.  On the other hand, the way the stones are in the ground, it also looks like there are graves on the other side of the fence.  It is possible that they headstones may have been lost when the rail cut was laid, or they fell over the edge with erosion.
The other stone, which is buried partially under dirt and what looks like a tip for landscaping rubbish.  It is hard to tell if it is another headstone or just a natural worn stone.
I have an email in to find out any more information about it.  I hope to be able to update soon!
UPDATE:  Well, not really, because I don't have anymore information.  If anyone out there knows anything, please let me know!  I am also curious about the lovely white house that is up for sale right across the rail cut next to the cemetery.  It would lead me to believe that this house is part of the Edwards family, but maybe not.  I didn't get any information from the Historical Society or the Township Trustee.  Thanks!!
