Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at another small section of Crown Hill Cemetery that we came across while driving around. Just behind the small section for the Indianapolis Home for Aged Women, we came across a monument for the Indianapolis Home for Friendless Colored Children.

Crown Hill Cemetery - The Indianapolis Home for Friendless Colored Children
Posted by Amber at 4:13 PMThis was another organization that I had never heard of. It was established in 1870 by the Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers or the Indianapolis Orthodox Friends. When it was founded, it was the only orphanage in Indiana that solely took care of African American children, primarily the children of destitute ex-slaves, and only one of a handful in the country.
The home sat at 317 W. 21st Street, starting its life as a small home, but over time it was heavily expanded to make enough space for those in need. The home received a good bit of private funding as well as funding from Marion County. A board of directors made up of women took care of the daily activities for the home, while a board of men took care of the finances.
The home took in African American children from birth to the age of 14 years, working to place these children with families in the Central Indiana area. At the end of the first year, they had found homes for 18 of these children, though it is listed that there were about 40 in total. In 1880, there were still around 40 children there, but in 1883, that number jumped to 123, 1891 they reported 141 and in 1892 it was listed as 126. The home was only meant to hold no more than 100 children.
While some in the city looked to this home as a benevolent act, others, including African Americans, criticized the home as being overcrowded (while it was) with the children "packed in like sardines into the miserable dormitories. Their beds were shuck mattresses and their pillows were not. Old and young were herded together. The poor youngsters were underfed and over-punished." The home was described further as being more of an asylum (which is was called at some point) with "some of them kept all day in straight jackets and many were sent to bed in that day - a position that did not allow their hands which were crossed, to move. Adhesive plaster was pasted over their mouth to compel quietude." These children were permitted no visitors and were not allowed to talk to anyone. They had no yard in which to spent time outside and no benches or playground equipment. It was even said that the city offered to buy and erect such equipment, but this was turned down by the superintendent.
In 1922, the Society of Friends turned over ownership of the home to the Marion County Board of Commissioners. This change was made due to the issues of overcrowding and insufficient funding. Foster care was also emerging as a preferred method of taking care of children in need at this time. The home was moved to the corner of Keystone Avenue and 25th Street and put into the care of Emma Duvalle, the first African American woman to be in charge.
By 1939, the Marion County Welfare Department had found homes for the children and the home was permanently closed.
You can see some photos of the children here. Unfortunately, there are no names attached to these children.
There is a fantastic article with names and history that you can read at the Invisible Indianapolis blog.
I did not realize until today that there were names on the backside of the monument. But I can't find anyone's photos of the backside, except for one slightly blurry one from an article when they were dedicated in 2006. So if anyone has a photo, please let me know so that I can include all 699 names. For now, I will be just doing the names that I have on the photos shown here.
In the memory of these children housed in the Indianapolis Home for Friendless Colored Children. Let us not forget these children:

The scan of her death certificate is very bad so I can't make out the names of her parents, but her cause of death appears to be Whooping Cough.

There is very little information about any of these children and that is so very sad. Much can be attributed to the time when a lot of these children were residents of the homes. Record keeping was not as important in some cases during the earlier part of the 20th century and, of course, so many of those records that were made have been lost to time. It is important that we never forget these names and what they endured as orphaned and abandoned children.
Rest In Peace.
