Friendship Park Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.




We stopped by this small, country cemetery on September 26, 2015.  It is neatly laid out and well taken care of.  The sign in front of the cemetery states that it is the Friendship Park Cemetery, though it is also called the IOOF Cemtery (International Order of the OddFellows) and Paragon Cemetery.

Our first stop is at the grave of Dawson Denney.

Born: 1839
Died: 1927

He had at least one child:
Frank Denney (1888-1916) - buried in Elvins Cemetery, St. Francois County, Missouri

He served in the 27th Indiana Infantry, Company F, in the Civil War.

Here we have the grave of Andrew Jackson Holsapple.

Born: March 1835
Died: December 4, 1901

He was the son of Jacob Holsapple (?-?) and Sarah Farris Holsapple (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they are buried.

He served in the Civil War in the 10th Indiana Cavalry, Company I.

Here is the grave of Peter Johnson.

Died: March 6, 1898, Morgan County, Indiana

He had at least one child:
Lincoln Johnson (1854-1928) - buried in Madison State Hospital Cemetery, Jefferson County, Indiana. (there is no marker for him, though hospital records show his burial.  He died of a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from epilepsy).

He served in the 33rd Indiana Infantry, Company H, in the Civil War.

He was married to Easter E. Kenworthy (1846-1914).  She is buried with him in Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.

He served in the Civil War in the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, Company B.

Born: 1839
Died: March 16, 1908, Morgan County, Indiana

He was married to Sarah Effirilla Kendrick Payton (1847-1907).  She is buried in Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.

They had at least one child:
Julia Ann Payton Martin (1867-1935) - buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery, Allen County, Indiana.

This is the grave of John M. Piearson.

Born: 1833
Died: 1897

His name is spelled differently on his memorial headstone than on his monument next to it.

He was married to Jane Piearson (1843-?).  She is buried with him in Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.

Here is the grave of Sarah Anna Kenworthy Potter.

Born: October 18, 1883
Died: June 29, 1908

She was married to Claude E. Potter (1880-1958).  He is buried with her in Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.  His name is listed below hers on the headstone.

This is the grave of Thomas R. Randall.

Born: 1848
Died: 1923

He was married to Mary E. Randall (1850-1933).  Her name is listed below his on the headstone in Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.

Below their names in that of Marshall Meaddows Randall.

Born: 1896
Died: 1910

I can only assume that he was their son, but I have nothing definitive.

Here is the grave of Private Absalom J. Ross.

Born: August 19, 1839, Big Springs (Marengo), Crawford County, Indiana
Died: October 7, 1900, Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana

He was the son of Isaac Ross (1794-1867) and Etersa Van Meter Ross (1804-1845). He was buried in Stierwalt Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.  She is buried in Marengo Cemetery in Marengo, Crawford County, Indiana. UPDATE!  Isaac and Etersa were married in 1817 in Grayson or Hardin County, Kentucky.  It is possible that Isaac is not buried in Stierwalt Cemetery as his headstone has not been located.  Isaac's second wife, Mary McCarty Ross is listed as being buried there as well, but, once again, the headstone has not been located.

He was the youngest of eleven siblings, though I only have the names for these shown below:
Isaac Ross (1822-?) - buried in Marengo Cemetery, Crawfrod County, Indiana.
Jacob Ross (1825-?)buried in Marengo Cemetery, Crawfrod County, Indiana.
George Ross (1826-1852)buried in Marengo Cemetery, Crawfrod County, Indiana.
Loranzo Ross (1832-?)buried in Marengo Cemetery, Crawfrod County, Indiana.

He was married to Hannah Farr Ross (1840-1898).  Her name is listed below his on the headstone.  UPDATE!  Hannah was married previously to Abraham Stierwalt (?-?).  They had one child named Florence Stierwalt (?-?).  I am not sure how their marriage ended.  

UPDATE!  They had three children:
John F. Ross (1870-1952) - buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion County, Indiana 
Gertrude Ross Robinson (1873-1922) - buried in Friendship Park Cemetery, Owen County, Indiana.
Harry Ross (1881-?) - his burial location is unknown.   

The last name on the headstone is that of Susannah Teague Farr Baker (1810-1901).  UPDATE!  She was Hannah's mother.  She was married to Daniel Curry Farr (1817-1850).  He is buried in Samaria Cemetery in Paragon, Morgan County, Indiana.

UPDATE! They had four children:
Allen Farr (1836-1939) - his burial location is unknown 
Nathan Logan Farr (1837-1913) - buried in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Lyon County, Kansas.
Doctor Uriah Farr (1846-1934) - buried in New South Park Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana (he served in the Civil War in Company D, 70th Indiana Volunteers) 
Hannah Farr Ross (1840-1898) - buried in Friendship Park Cemetery, Owen County, Indiana.

UPDATE!  Absalom Ross was discharged as a private in Washington D.C. on June 8, 1865.

Duncan-Schooner Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Duncan-Schooner Cemetery in Nashville, Indiana.




Duncan-Schooner Cemetery is one cemetery with two sections.  The front part of the cemetery is the Schooner Cemetery, established 1885,  and the back section is the Duncan Cemetery, established 1943.  There used to be a sign for Duncan Cemetery, but I didn't see it the day that we went, September 6, 2015.  There are over 1,200 interments listed for the combined cemeteries.

Our first stop is at the grave of Elias W. Betts.

Born: March 13, 1838, Sussex County, Delaware
Died: February 15, 1919, Brown County, Indiana

He was the son of Samuel J. Betts (1786-1875) and Isabelle Wooten James Betts (1813-1883).  They are buried in the Daugherty Cemetery in Walesboro, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

He had several siblings:
John M. Betts (?-1868) - buried in Indian Hill, Sussex County, Delaware.
Thomas B. Betts (1834-1858) - buried in Daugherty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Isaac J. Betts (1835-1898) - buried in Betts Cemetery, Cross County, Arkansas.
Noah H. Betts (1836-1874) - buried in Daugherty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Samuel M. Betts (1842-1921) - buried in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton City, Virginia.

He was married to Susan Mendenhall Betts Haynes (1844-1923).  They were married on May 29, 1861 in Ridgeville, Indiana.  They were divorced at some point and she was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Ridgeville, Randolph County, Indiana.

They had several children:
Samuel H. Betts (1864-1939) - buried in Quaker Lynn Cemetery, Randolph County, Indiana.
Noah James Betts (1868-1950) - buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Randolph County, Indiana.
Edward Edmon Betts (1871-1953) - buried in Mariners Bethel United Methodist Church, Sussex County, Delaware.
Alva William Betts (1874-1961) - buried in Monroe Cemetery, Preble County, Ohio
Rosa Betts Smith (1877-1956) - buried in IOOF Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.
Lottie Betts Zorn (1880-1899) - buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.
Earl Betts (1882-1910) - buried in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana

He was the husband of Rachel J. Floyd (1849-1924).  She is buried with him at Duncan-Schooner Cemetery in Nashville, Brown County, Indiana.

He had at least one child:
William Artie Floyd (1887-1962) - buried in Valahalla Memory Gardens, Monroe County, Indiana.

He served in the Civil War, though I am not sure what Regiment or Company.  There is a G.A.R. badge in front of his grave.

This is the grave of Thomas Hatchett.

Born: 1760
Died: February 12, 1862

He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War.  From the information that I have found, it would appear that Thomas was a wagon driver in the War and became good friends with George Washington.  After the war, he moved to Bartholomew County, Indiana, where he purchased land and developed that into a large farm where he raised his family.  

He was married to Betsy Cox Hatchett (?-?).  I am unsure as to where she was buried.

They had seven children:

Greene Hatchett (?-?) - unknown
Patty Hatchett (?-?) - unknown
Malinda Hatchett (?-?) - unknown
Bartlett Hatchett (1835-?) - unknown
Jane Hatchett (?-?) - unknown

He was the son of Jonas Emery Henry (?-?) and Abigail Sleeper Henry (?-?).  I haven't been able to figure of where they were buried.

He was married to Martha Buchanan Henry (1792-1875).  She is buried near him in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery.

They had at least two children:
John Henry (1828-1874) - buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
Margaret Henry Havron (1830-1869) - buried in Bethel Baptist Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

We now stop at the grave of Uriah S. McQueen.

Born: January 15, 1787, Culpeper County, Virginia
Died: April 7, 1853, Brown County, Indiana

He was the son of Thomas McQueen (1761-1838) and Sarah Wilson Vaughn McQueen (1768-1838).  They are both buried in Liberty Cemetery in Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana.  Thomas served in the Revolutionary War.

He had several siblings:
Mary McQueen Thomas (1785-1858) - buried in Homer Cemetery, Rush County, Indiana.
Joshua McQueen (1788-1878) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Benjamin B. McQueen (1792-1858) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Joseph Wilson McQueen (1794-1841) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Elizabeth McQueen Stoughton (1797-1892) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Jane Nancy McQueen Lee (1804-1874) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Deborah McQueen Brown (1808-1835) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
John Brown McQueen (1810-1880) - buried in Gill Cemetery, Douglas County, Illinois.  (It has been noted that his headstone is missing)

He was married to Elisabeth Tanner McQueen (1792-1859). She is buried in Liberty Cemetery in Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

They had at least four children:
William Robinson Tanner McQueen (1819-1891) - buried in Albin Cemetery, Douglas County, Illinois.
Belinda McQueen McQueen (1817-1891) - buried in Bunker Cemetery, Wayne County, Illinois.
Thomas J. McQueen (1818-1874) - buried in Albin Cemetery, Douglas County, Illinois.
Joseph Tanner McQueen (1820-1859) - burial site is unknown.

This is a simple hand etched fieldstone.  It has her name carved into it with nothing else.

He was the son of Stephen Parks (?-?) and Indiana Followell Parks (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they are buried.

He served in the Civil War in the 82nd Indiana Infantry, Company D.  He died in Gallatin, Tennessee of measles.

Here we have the grave of Martha "Matty" Adams Scarbrough.

Born: March 15, 1800, Tennessee
Died: April 17, 1846, Brown County, Indiana

She was the wife of Eligah Scarbrough (1800-1862).  They were married sometime in 1818.  He is buried in Old Union Cemetery in Taylorsville, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

Here we have the grave of Sergeant Charles G. Sturgeon.

Born: May 17, 1890, Nashville, Brown County, Indiana

He was the son of Gilman Sturgeon (1862-1948) and Minerva Sturgeon (1867-1932).  Both are buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery in Nashville, Brown County, Indiana.

He had several siblings:
Lora Marion Sturgeon (1887-1986) - he died in Flat Rock, Indiana, but his burial location is unknown.
Ralph W. Sturgeon (1893-1968) - buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
Zona L. Sturgeon Ault (1897-1976)buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
Letha Anne Sturgeon Robertson (1898-1950) - she died in Phoenix, Arizona and is listed as having had a non-cemetery burial.
Ella Margaret Sturgeon Watson (1901-1980) buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
Harley James Sturgeon (1903-1970) buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.

He served in the Army in the 7th Infantry, Company G.  He enlisted on March 19, 1915 and was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  From there he was sent to the Mexican Border and set off for overseas on October 31, 1917.  He was assigned to the 18th Infantry, 1st Division, Company M.  He participated in several battles including the Battles of Cantigny, Montdidier, Noyon, Aisne-Marne and St. Mihiel.  He died in Langres, France from wounds he received in battle.

We now stop at the grave of Private James Wise, Sr.

Born: 1791, Maryland
Died: September 26, 1880

He had several siblings, though I only found mention of one:
Thomas Wise (?-?) - unknown

According to a family history, James' father was killed a couple of years after the family came to Indiana from Maryland.  It is said that he was killed while fighting Indians.

He served in the War of 1812, having enlisted on August 1, 1812 at Georgetown, Gallatin County, Kentucky,  He was a Private in the 17th Regiment under Captain James Meade.  He fought in the Battle of River Raisin and was wounded in the shoulder.  Unfortunately, during this battle Captain Meade was killed and he was transferred to Captain Holt's Company.  After the siege at Fort Meigs, he was honorably discharged on November 8, 1813 in Detroit, Michigan.  

He was married to Rachel Watts Wise (1794-1889) on December 25, 1814.  She is buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.

They had eleven children:
Williamson Wise (?-1847) - unknown (he died on Yellow Fever in New Orleans, Louisiana just after his discharge from service in the Mexican War)
Matthew Wise (?-?) - unknown
Mason Wise (?-?) - unknown
Peter Wise (?-?) - unknown
Margaret Wise Jeffers (?-?) - unknown 
John Wise (1842-1914) - buried in Bolckow Cemetery, Andrew County, Missouri.

This is the grave of John W. Wise.

Born: April 3, 1869
Died: September 6, 1869

He was the infant son of James Wise (1826-1898) and Lucinda F. Wise (1836-1895).  They are both buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery in Nashville, Brown County, Indiana.

Here we have the grave of Williamson D. Wise.

Born: December 20, 1820
Died: August 24, 1847, New Orleans, Louisiana

He was the son of James Wise (1791-1880) and Rachel Watts Wise (1794-1889).  They are buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery in Nashville, Brown County, Indiana.


He had several siblings:
Matthew Wise (?-?) - unknown
Mason Wise (?-?) - unknown
Peter Wise (?-?) - unknown
Margaret Wise Jeffers (?-?) - unknown 
John Wise (1842-1914) - buried in Bolckow Cemetery, Andrew County, Missouri.

He is listed as having died of Yellow Fever just after his discharge from the Mexican War.

Our last stop is at the grave of James S. Woods.

Born: March 28, 1774
Died: July 6, 1849

He was married to Mary Woods (1778-1851).  She is buried in Duncan-Schooner Cemetery near him.

They had at least one child:
Jackson Woods (1822-1864) - buried in Andersonville National Cemetery, Macon County, Georgia. (he is listed as having been a Lieutenant in the Civil War in the 82nd Infantry, Company H.  He was captured at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia and died in Macon Prison.)
