Hello! Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana.

This cemetery is a very large, active, public cemetery located on the south side of Greenwood. There are around 14, 500 interments and the cemetery is broken into two sections. As you drive in, you have the option to go straight forward which will take you back to the newer section of the cemetery. We followed this path when we visited, not realizing that the new section of the cemetery is not connected in anyway to the older section. The older section, which is in the front where the sign is requires a rather uncomfortable left-hand turn to enter, so we pulled into their upon our exit from the newer section as it was far easier.
The cemetery has many beautiful monuments and has a specific section up near the front fence where there is a reproduction cannon and several veterans monuments, all from the Civil War as far as I could tell.

He served in the Civil War in Company F, 5th Indiana Cavalry Regiment. His enlistment date is shown as February 14, 1894 in Greenwood, Indiana. He mustered out on June 15, 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee.
I found an article snippet from 1887 where it says that he and several others were moved to the "new cemetery" by the G.A.R. Makes me wonder where he was originally buried.

He was the son of Lilbourne L. Andis (1820-1886) and Julia Ann Simpson (1817-1880/1885. They were married on August 23, 1838 in Rush County, Indiana. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. Her burial location us unknown, but I find a note that she died from consumption.

According to a newspaper clipping, he was killed by the accidental discharge of a gun while troops were boarding a train in Greenwood. He was buried originally in Mount Auburn Cemetery but was moved to the Greenwood Cemetery in the summer of 1898.
He enlisted in Company G of the 132nd Indiana Infantry on May 18, 1864. Contrary to the news article above, the roster says "supposed mustered out, term expired". He did only enlist for the 100 days volunteers, but the above article makes it sound like he was killed before his term ever officially started.

He was the son of William Bracket Averitt (1830-1912). He is buried in Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Trimble County, Kentucky. I have found some confusion concerning Lafayette's mother. A family genealogy that I found lists that William was married twice; first to Elizabeth Jane Peak Averitt (1838-1911); second to Martha Bates Averitt (1851-?). An obituary I found for Lafayette says that his mother died when he was eight years old, therefore his mother died in 1861/1862. With that knowledge, I can't see that either one of the above listed women could be his birth mother. Elizabeth was buried with William in Bedford Cemetery, but I am unsure as to where Martha was buried.

According to a notice in The Evening Star from Franklin, Indiana dated September 5, 1913, the will for Anna, known as Laura in this note, was misplaced. Her attorney was asking everyone to look for it and anyone that may have witnessed it to contact the Judge.

His name is spelled Hutchison in the roster records, but it also spelled Hutchinson in a newspaper article. His was one of the graves moved to Greenwood Cemetery in 1887 when a lot was donated by the G.A.R. post in Greenwood. I have no idea where he was buried originally, nor what happened to his actual headstone as this is a memorial shield stone.

He was a soldier in the 5th Indiana Cavalry, Company F. The 5th Indiana Cavalry was also known as the 90th Indiana Regiment. He lived in Greenwood and mustered into service on August 18, 1862. He was promoted to Captain of Company A. 2nd North Carolina Infantry. This is confusing as there doesn't appear to be a Union North Carolina division, only Confederate and his name is not in that roster. I would think that is he was in that roster, that would mean he had defected to the other side. It's possible that "Co. 'A' 2d N.C. Infantry" means something else, but I am not sure what. I cannot find him listed as a Captain in the 90th Infantry/5th Cavalry.

I know that Joel Jr. was married to Mariah E. Wright Law (?-?) on December 24, 1881 as there is a newspaper article from the The Daily Republican discussing Joel Jr. and his wife, Mrs. Wright. You can read the entry here. I don't know if they had any children or what the outcome of this argument was, though she did try to empty the house of her things and leave. I do know that Joel Jr. has at least one son and daughter, but I don't know anything about them so far.

While, I was doing research on this particular entry I came across a myriad of wives for these men. I have not yet been able to decipher whose was whose as it was not listed whether it was Jr. or Sr. in the marriage record for some of them. I will do my best to list the information as found. I am listing it for Joel Sr. as well, just to be as thorough as possible.
From an article in the Shelby Democrat, dated June 4, 1885; "Joel Law has filed a suit for divorce from his wife, Edmonia Law, alleging cruel treatment and neglect of household duties. The parties were divorced in 1879, and afterwards re-married. Mrs. Law has filed a cross petition for divorce, custody of their child and $5,000 alimony. Mr. Law is seventy-two years of age and Mrs. Law is about thirty." This pertains to Joel Sr. since the advanced age and date would give him a birth date of 1813. I also found her name twice in the marriage records for Shelby County, therefore I can safely see that she was Sr. wife twice.

He was a cabinet maker in his early life and then a farmer, but turned to his son's canning business in his later years. When Mrs. Polk passed away, schools were closed and business shuttered early. They are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery nearby.

She is buried with him in Greenwood Cemetery.

According to Charles' obituary, he was working on getting a packing house in order, when he found a gas leak. The lantern sparked with the gas fumes which resulted in a explosion. The injuries from said explosion were fatal.

They were married around 1808 in Kentucky and are both buried in Lyons Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana. They were cousins, though in that day it wasn't an uncommon thing, hence the same maiden and married name. According to a family history that I found, the town of Germantown, in Wayne County, Indiana, was laid by George and was originally named Georgetown when it was recorded in 1827, but changed to Germantown and then recorded in 1844. Not sure why the change. George was listed as being a graduate of Georgetown College in Kentucky.

I am not sure which Church exactly as there were several listed in the article, it just says "Officers of the Church". He was also considered a pioneer of the county as he came to settle in 1825, likely from Kentucky.

She was married twice, her first husband being Rice Springer (1811-1844). He is buried in Howard Cemetery, Decatur County, Indiana. He is listed as having died from consumption. According to the Indiana Marriage Records, they were married on March 8, 1835. This date is also reflected in her obituary.
It gets confusing as this is also the same marriage date for a man named Hiram Springer and Nancy Howard, but she is buried in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana - with Hiram Springer. Both of their names are on the headstone. The birth and death dates (1814-1886) are close, but still different. BUT --- I also found a marriage record for Hiram and Nancy for July 12, 1835.

I don't find any information for a 14th cavalry unit for WW1 or 2. I am not sure what his service was, though his memorial stone is reminiscent of the ones that I have seen for World War 1.

He was married to Parthenea Bryan Springer Wood (1836-1883) in 1855. Her name is listed below his on the headstone.
She was the daughter of Rice Springer (1811-1844) and Nancy Howard Springer (1814-1886). He is buried in Howard Cemetery in Decatur County, Indiana, while she is buried in South Park Cemetery in Decatur County, Indiana. I am unsure that she is the correct Nancy Springer. I believe that Nancy Springer Sorter (1816-1892), buried in Greenwood Cemetery, is likely the correct one. See her listing above for the explanation and confusion on the Springer/Sorter issue.
