Mt. Ebal Cemetery Re-Visit

For our first trip of 2016, we decided to stay local and re-visit Mt. Ebal Cemetery near Lake Monroe.  We first visited this cemetery in January of 2015 and at the time neither of us were really thinking about the history of the cemetery as much as just looking at the headstones.  Since we have grown and expanded our interest in local cemeteries, we are heading back to photograph them again and to try to be a little more thorough.

As a reminder, this cemetery is located just off of Fairfax Road before arriving at The Four Winds Resort and Marina.  Across the road is the now defunct Mt. Ebal Church.

Our first stop is at the grave of Sarah Bidwell.

Born: June 14, 1794
Died: March 11, 1866

She was the wife of Charles Bidwell (?-?).  He is not buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery as far as I was able to tell, so I am not sure exactly where he is buried.

The stone is in very bad condition, laying on the ground and broken into three pieces.  There are two smaller stones laying on top of this stone which appear to be infant graves, but I have not yet found any reference to their names.

Here we have the grave of James Hershel Butcher.

Born: 1889
Died: June 20, 1938, Monroe County, Indiana

He was the son of Matthew Butcher (1853-1927) and Elizabeth Jane Grubb Butcher (1846-1922).  Both are buried nearby in Mount Ebal Cemetery.

He had several siblings:
William Perry Butcher (1879-1955)buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
John O. Butcher (1881-1906) buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Lillie McClelland Butcher Stewart (1883-1940)buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Grover Clevenland Butcher (1884-1959) buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Joseph Harvey Butcher (1886-1973) buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Benjamin Harrison Butcher (1890-1958) buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

He was married to Delphia Carrie Myers Butcher (1897-1978).  She is buried next to him in Mt. Ebal Cemetery.

They had two children:
Gerald Bernard Butcher (1923-1976) - buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
James Herschell Butcher (1931-1967) - buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

We now stop at the grave of Tilman J. Chambers.

Born: May 20, 1837, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: October 16, 1908, Indiana

He was the son of Elizabeth Chambers Chambers (1815-1886) and James Kennealy (?-?).  She is buried in the Chambers Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana, but I am not sure if he is buried there as well or not.

He was married to Artemisia Prince Chambers (1847-1899).  She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Faytetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.

They had at least one child:
William Sherman Chambers (1867-1945) - buried in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Monroe County, Indiana.

He served in the Civil War in the 120th Indiana Infantry, Company H as a Private.  His name was spelled Chaimbers in the roster record.  He mustered into service on March 10, 1864 and then out on January 8, 1866.  His place of residence was listed as Bedford, Indiana.

Here we have the grave of Ulyssus Grant Chambers.

Born: January 1, 1867
Died: May 19, 1870

He was the young son of D.A. Chambers (?-?) and E.Z. Chambers (?-?).  I am unsure of their names or where they are buried.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the grave of Clementine Souders Eads.
Born: unknown
Died: October 27, 1886
She was the first wife of John Baptist Eads (1851-1929).  He is buried near her in Mount Ebal Cemetery.
Her grave is an interesting one as it is a hand carved headstone.  There are several smaller ones near hers that are the same but have no names, only numbers.  The only one that I could easily make out the day that we were there is the one pictured to the right that says "No 8".  It is sad to think that these children were only buried with a number on their headstone.
They may not have had any children, or possibly the ones that are the numbered markers.  I am unsure of this.
This is the grave of Ora C. Eads.
Born: July 13, 1891
Died: December 29, 1896
I believe that this is the other side of Clementine Eads' grave listed above, but I can not remember exactly.  There were three or four of these graves that were the same and all were of the Eads family.  At least one or two of them had the front of back carved, possibly even all of them.
He is listed as being the son of John Baptist Eads (1851-1929).  He is buried nearby at Mount Ebal Cemetery.  I believe that his mother is probably Nancy Jane Todd Eads (1866-1917).  She is buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery as well.
He had several siblings:
Ira Vernon Eads (1895-1953) - buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Leonard Oscar Eads (1897-1970) - buried in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Monroe County, Indiana.
Stacey Everett Eads (1900-1973) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Nora E. Eads Goen (1903-1957) - buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Burl Eads (1905-1975) - buried in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Monroe County, Indiana.
This grave of for the Son of John and Nancy Eads.  There is a name but it is hard to read and I have not yet found any reference in the interment records for this cemetery.  I will have to go back and take another look to see what the name is.  There is a cross carved into the top of it and there are no dates shown, which leads me to believe that this may have been an infant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Zellie A. Eads.

Born: April 6, 1888
Died: August 11, 1888

This headstone does not have her parents carved into it, but considering that the time frame fits and it matches the rest of the Eads graves in the row, she was probably the daughter of John Baptist Eads (1851-1929) and Nancy Jane Todd Eads (1866-1917).  They are both buried nearby.

Because I am not sure of this relation, I am not going to list siblings for her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here we have the remains of the grave of John Floyd.
Born: March 12, 1790
Died: March 20, 1856
He had at least one child:
John Tipton Floyd (1829-1871) - buried in Jonesville Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
I have no more information on this grave.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave for John H. Fox.

Born: May 6, 1854
Died: October 14, 1913

He was married to Linda Eliza Fox (1865-1938).  She us buried near him in Mount Ebal Cemetery.  I am unsure if they had any children.

There is a shield carved into the top of his headstone which leads me to believe that he may have served in some branch of the military or partook in a war, but I have not yet found any reference to which one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the grave of George W. Hartsock.
Born: 1842
Died: August 25, 1918, Monroe County, Indiana
He served in the Civil War in the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, which was also known as the 21st Indiana Infantry, in Company B.   He is listed as having mustered into service on July 24, 1861 and then out on January 13, 1866.  The roster record lists him as a Veteran from Gosport, Indiana.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is the grave of Buela Hawkins.

Born: January 12, 1916
Died: May 9, 1916.

I am unsure as to who her parents were.  There are several Hawkins' buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery so there is probably a family connection somewhere.

Her headstone is a hand-carved stone and placed next to one other headstone, that of Mary K. Hawkins.
Born: August 26, 1924
Died: December 4, 1925

They were probably sisters, but still no indication of parents.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our final stop on our re-visit is at the grave of Elizabeth Litz.
Born: March 22, 1815
Died: January 14, 1875
She was the first wife of Leonard Litz (1807-1894) who is also buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery.  I don't see any record of children.
