New Hope Cemetery

Today's A Walk Through the Tombstones is at New Hope Cemetery in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.2593117, -85.9402695

This cemetery is located just off of St. Rd. 31 between Columbus and Edinburgh.  It is just behind the New Hope Church, a lovely brick building built in 1871.  The Marr Cemetery, which has an entry here, is located in the front section of the parking lot for this church.

There are just under 300 interments in this cemetery and it is an active burial ground.  I didn't get as many photos the day I visited as I wanted to as they were doing mowing that day and there was a family taking care of a grave.  I didn't want to be in the way.

New Hope Church was built in 1871 and remodeled in 1914.  I haven't been able to find out much about the church itself, as the website for the church has no history whatsoever.  This also bothers me.  In my opinion, and that is all it is, if you have an historic building, having a paragraph or two about its history is always helpful.  But anyway, I digress.  What I did find was that the site where the current church is located  there was likely an older Baptist congregation.  The original site of the Hope Baptist Church could have been located here or at least very close by to this site.  They held their services until around 1832 when the organization was abandoned.  Why it was abandoned, I don't know, but it is possible it was due to a reorganization of the congregation.  A new Baptist Church was established in Flat Rock, Bartholomew County, Indiana.  They still hold regular services there.
