Cole Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Cole Cemetery, which is located at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.

This appears to be the family cemetery for the Cole family, though it is also listed as being the County Farm Cemetery.  The only stones in the cemetery are of those of the Cole Family, though it has been thought that residents of the County Farm were interred in this cemetery but there is no evidence for this and there are no stones, though there is a large open field area just on the other side of the iron fence, which is possibly the largest remaining Seward iron fence.

Bunger Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Bunger Cemetery located just off of State Road 45, behind what used to be the Meltem Orchard.   It is also known as the Bunger Ward Cemetery.

We visited this cemetery on June 09, 2015 as part of our week long vacation of searching out cemeteries.  This one is on private property and we obtained permission from the ladies at the Orchard Store to go back and take a look at it.  It is up on a little rise and surrounded by a little wire fence that was probably constructed just to fence off the stones.  I am not sure of when this cemetery was established.  It is a family cemetery mostly dedicated to the Bunger's, but there is a section for the Ward's surrounded by an iron fence made by Austin Seward.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of George W. Bunger.
Born: March 1, 1843, Virginia
Died: February 28, 1869, Monroe County, Indiana
He was the son of Jacob Bunger (1808-1892) and Mary Seigle Camper Bunger (1818-1897).  They are both buried in Bunger Cemetery (-Ward Cemetery).
He had several brothers:
Henry W. Bunger (1838-1862) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
James E. Bunger (1840-1864) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Charles Anthony Bunger (1845-1933) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Harvey A. Bunger (1849-1871)buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
William H. Bunger (1856-1885)buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
He served in the Civil War in the 50th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, Company D as a Corporal   He enlisted on December 1, 1861 as a Corporal.   He mustered out on January 5, 1865 with the rank of Corporal.
His obituary was listed in the Bloomington Progress, March 10, 1869:
"Bunger, George W. died February 28, 1869 of consumption at his father's residence.  Age 26.  He lacked one day of being 27 years of age, his birthday being on March 1st.  Was a member of the 50th Regt. of Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War.  Was laid to rest beside his 2 older brothers."
There is a carving at the top of his stone that has a United States flag among what appear to be tents.  I assume that this is a reference to the Civil War.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave of Henry W. Bunger.

Born: October 13, 1838, Virginia
Died: December 16, 1862, Monroe County, Indiana

He was the son of Jacob Bunger, Jr. (1808-1892) and Mary Seigle Camper Bunger (1818-1897).  They are both buried in Bunger Cemetery (-Ward Cemetery).

He had several brothers:
James E. Bunger (1840-1864) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
George W. Bunger (1843-1869) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Charles Anthony Bunger (1845-1933) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Harvey A. Bunger (1849-1871) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
William H. Bunger (1856-1885) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

He served in the Civil War in the 82nd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, Company F as a Private.  He died at home, but I haven't yet found information about how or why.

He has a soldier carved into the top of his grave, but I can't tell what the soldier is standing in.  It almost looks like tents, but I can't be sure.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the grave of Jacob Bunger, Sr.
Born:  1768, Virginia
Died: May 8, 1850, Monroe County, Indiana
He was the son of Valentin Felta Felty Bunger (?-?) and Elizabeth Bunger (?-?).  I am unsure of where his parents are buried.
He was born in Virginia, but moved to Hardin County, Kentucky sometime between 1812 & 1817.
He bought and sold quite a bit of land.  Records show that he bought land in 1816 from a man named Daniel Linder in Hardin County, Kentucky.  In 1817 and 1819, he bought more land.  He owned land at one point near Henry and Phillip Bunger on Meeting Creek.  Sometime before 1820, he sold the land in Hardin County, Kentucky.  He and his wife, Peggy, signed the deeds.  But in 1820, the census shows that he has no wife, but seven children.  After 1822, not sure of the date, Jacob moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, but may have returned to Greenbriar County, West Virginia to become a stage coach driver from Lewisburg to White Sulphur Springs.  He finally arrived in 1828 in Monroe County, Indiana and settled on a farm that he bought in Van Buren Township.  This cemetery is on the original land settled by him and his wife, Margaret.  I believe that she was his second wife.  In 1848, he traded this farm land for some neighboring land and lived out his days there.  He was admitted to the Old Settlers of Monroe County on September 17, 1860.
He was married at least twice.  I am having a hard time determining whether he was married once or twice.  There is reference to his wife Peggy before 1820, but at the census in 1820 he is not listed as having a wife.  I know that Peggy can be a nickname for Margaret.  I am only going to list information for Margaret Mary House Bunger (1771-1834) as I have reference to her and her children.
They had seven children, I believe, but I don't have listings for all of them:
Phillip Bunger (1796-1870) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Susannah Bunger Hutsinpiller (1798-1842) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Jacob Bunger, Jr. (1808-1892) buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Joseph T. Bunger (1810-1898)buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
This is the grave of Jacob Bunger, Jr.
Born: March 22, 1808, Virginia
Died: February 16, 1892, Monroe County, Indiana
He was the son of Jacob Bunger, Sr. (1768-1850) and Margaret Mary House Bunger (1771-1834).  They are both buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery.
He had several siblings:
Phillip Bunger (1796-1870) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Joseph T. Bunger (1810-1898) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
He married Mary Seigle Camper Bunger (?-?) on December 20, 1837 in Botetourt County, Virginia.  Sometime after they were married, they relocated to Monroe County, Indiana.  She is buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery.
They had several children:
Henry W. Bunger (1838-1862) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
James E. Bunger (1840-1864) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
George W. Bunger (1843-1869) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Sarah V. Bunger Dinsmore Wood (?-?) - unknown
Matilda Esther Mattie Bunger Lewis (?-?) - unknown
Charles Anthony Bunger (1845-1933) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Harvey A. Bunger (1849-1871) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
William H. Bunger (1856-1885) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
He served as part of the District 5 road crew in 1853 and in 1854 was elected for the District 5 Superintendent of Roads.  In 1859, he built a brick home oppposite the Country Farm and filled the yard with pine trees.  He appears on the 1860 census as having $5,000 real property and $1,160 in personal property.
His obituary was listed in the Bloomington Republican Progress on February 24, 1892:
"Died on the morning of the 16th at his home four miles west of Bloomington.  Age 84.  HIs spine was seriously injured in 1880 when he was thrown from his buggy on N. College Ave. onto a pile of stones.  He was able to move only with assistance.  He had also become alomst totally blind, but yet was very patient and cheerful.  A member of the Walnut St. Presbyterian Church.  Funeral at the residence on Thursday morning."
He also had an obituary listed the Bloomington Republican Progress on March 2, 1892:
"Died at his home four miles west of Bloomington at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 16, 1892.  Married Mary S. Camper of Fincastle, Va. on December 20, 1837.  Five sons who died in manhood preceded him in death; three children are still living--Chas. A. of Ellettsville; Mrs. Wood of Indianapolis: Mrs. Lewis who lives at the old homestead."
There were also some newspaper notices that were published before his death.  This one was published just months after his accident in the Bloomington Weekly Telephone on September 24, 1881:
"Uncle Jacob Bunger, our citizens will be grieved to hear, is lying at death's door.  Mr. Bunger, it will be remembered, last October was thrown from a buggy by a runaway team on North College Avenue.  He was taken into the house of Rev. McNary where it was found a thigh had been broken and his head severely bruised.  He was taken home and since has been confined to his bed suffering undurable pain at times.  Though absent from the public, that tall stately frame so characteristic of the veteran Virginians, in which he took great pride in being, has by no means been forgotten, nor the good-natured heart so full of good will and absent of that spite so apt to human nature."
There are several more newspaper notices and articles about him that can be read in his listing at Find-A-Grave.
This is the grave of Luke Ward's wife, Margaret Abel Ward.
Born: February 16, 1799, Wythe, Hampton City, Virginia
She had at least one sibling that I have found reference to:
Elias Abel (?-?) - unknown
She was married to Luke Ward (1798-1884) who is buried near her in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery.
Together they had several children:
Daniel Ward (1821-1895) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Isaac O. Ward (1823-1890) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Nancy C. Ward (1828-1899) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Here is the grave of one of Luke and Margaret's children, Miss Nancy C. Ward.
Born: 1828
Died: January 27, 1899
She had at least three siblings:
Daniel Ward (1821-1895) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Isaac O. Ward (1823-1890) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
John Ward (1838-1893) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
I can find no reference to marriage or to children and suspect that she had neither in her life as she is known as Miss Nancy.
Her obituary was listed in the Bloomington Telephone on January 31, 1899:
"Nancy C. Ward, one of the best known ladies residing in the western part of the county, is dead.  The end came Friday morning at 9 o'clock, thus ending many weeks of suffering and pain.  Miss Ward was the daughter of Like and Margaret Ward, pioneer residents of the county who located on a farm about four miles west of the city and where the family from generation to generation have continued to live.  Miss Ward was 72 years of age and made her home with her brother, Ruben, who has for years been caring for the old home.  She was a sister of Mrs. H.J. Nichols of this city and a true Christian woman, liked and respected by all who knew her.  Her death was due to a complication of stomach trouble and lung fever from which she suffered for months."
There is a reference to her brother, Ruben, and her sister, Mrs. H.J.Nichols, but I can not find listing for them otherwise.
Born: 1850
Died: September 10, 1872, Monroe County, Indiana
Her parents were Reuben Anderson Ward (1810-1891) and Lavina Lovina Otwell Ward (1812-?).  Both are buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery.
Her siblings were:
Francis M. Ward (1833-1923) - buried in Worthington Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana.
Hannah Otwell (1839-1874) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Mary F. Ward (1872-1873) - buried in Bunger (-Ward) Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Her obituary was listed in the Bloomington Progress on September 18, 1872:
