Walker's Chapel Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Walker's Chapel Cemetery in Kirksville, Indiana.  It is located just off of South Rockport Road across from Walker's Chapel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of Mary A. Ellis.
Born: unknown
Died: April 1823
Her grave stone is in very bad condition and has become illegible in some places.
Here is the grave of Rosa Gillham.
Born: August 16, 1892
Died: September 3, 1894
There is an easter lily carved into the top of her stone.  This symbolizes purity and chastity.  It can also symolize her youth.
The inscription reads, "Daughter of D.P. & Rebecca".
There is no indication as to who her parents were beyond the inscription.
Here we have the grave of Lucy Tollett Parham.
Born: May 6, 1807
Died: April 15, 1848
There is a hand with the finger pointing up and the words "Gone Home" carved above her name.
She was married to Allen Parham (1798-1871).  He is buried near her at Walker's Chapel Cemetery.
Their union produced four children:
Henrietta Parham Reed (1824-1924) - buried in Beyers and Rainbolt Cemetery, Lawrence County, Indiana.
John Parham (1831-1894) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
William Parham (1832-1903) - buried in Rose Hill, Monroe County, Indiana
Allen Parham (1834-1898) - buried in Old Elnora Cemetery, Daviess County, Indiana.
Here we have the grave of William G. Phillips.
Born: unknown
Died: October 13, 1885
The inscription is hard to read, but I believe that it shows his age to be at 81 years.  I can't make out the months and days.  This would put his birth year at roughly 1804.
There is a smaller grave leaning up against his.  There are initials carved into it that read, "W.F.P."  It is the grave of Fred Phillips (?-?).  This may have been a young child or another relative.  There is no further record.
 This is a lovely monument styled grave for Emma L. Sare.
Born: unknown
Died September 2, 1883
The inscription shows that she was the wife of A. Sare and was 22 years, 11 months and 17 days old when she passed away.  This would put her birth date roughly around June 14, 1860.
She was the first wife of James Arthur Sare (?-?) and was shown living with his family in the 1880 census.
At the bottom of the stone is carved the name of Andry Sare (1883-1883).  He was 24 days old when he passed.
It is interesting to note that their names are caved into a shield on the monument.  I haven't found a specific reference to a shield on a monument or tombstone that is not associated with a soldier.
This is the grave of Nancy Nannie A. East Sare.
Born: 1847
Died: November 22, 1873
She was the wife of James Monroe Sare (1849-1920).  He is buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Pueblo County, Colorado.
They had one child:
Ransom L. Sare (1871-1851) - buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver County, Colorado.
Here is the grave of Jesse A. Sullivan.
Born: January 28, 1853, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: December 23, 1853, Monroe County, Indiana
There is a lamb carved into the top of the gravestone.  This usually is to symbolize a child.
There are three children buried under this headstone.  The others are carved into the other sides of the grave.
His parents were Ira I. Sullivan (1827-1865) and Martha Smith Walker Sullivan (1825-1905).  They are both buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery.
He had five siblings in all:
This is the grave for Joseph Smith Walker.
Born: April 14, 1795, North Carolina.
Died: May 21, 1881, Monroe County, Indiana.
His father was Richard Walker (1770-1859) and his buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery.  In fact, the Chapel and the Cemetery are named after him.  He was a pioneer Methodist minister.  His mother was Martha Smith Walker (?-?) but I am not sure where she was buried.
He had seven siblings:
Elmore Walker (1800-1851) - buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery,  Monroe County, Indiana.
Martha Hickman Walker O'Brien (1803-1880) - buried in Oxford Cemetery, Johnson County, Iowa.
George Washington Walker (1809-1884) - buried in Warnock Cemetery, Gibson County, Indiana.
Daniel Broyles Walker (1827-1907) - buried in Oxford Cemetery, Johnson County, Iowa.
Tennessee Walker (1838-1878) - buried in Oxford Cemetery, Johnson County, Iowa.
Eunice C. Walker (1840-1888) - buried in Oxford Cemetery, Johnson County, Iowa.
He was married twice.  His first wife was Mary Atkins Walker (1794-1857).  She is buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery near him.
Together they had three children:
Richard George Walker (1825-1886) - buried in Grandview Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana.
Mary H. Walker (1828-1846) - buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Jacob A. Walker (1831-1851) - buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
His second wife was Lucinda Legg Walker (1810-1877).  She is buried in Keller Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
They had no children from their marriage.
There is a hand with the finger pointing up carved into the top of his tombstone.  This symbolizes going home.
Now we come to the grave of George W. Whitaker.
Born: 1847
Died: January 13, 1863, Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky
There is a carving on the top of his grave stone that is a flag and what appears to be an encampment of some sort.
He was a Union Soldier serving in the 82nd Indiana Volunteers, Company F.  He was killed at Bowling Green, Kentucky, but I am not sure what battle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of John S. Whitaker.

Born: November 1808
Died: December 1870

I can not find any interment record at this cemetery for this particular burial.  I have even checked all of Monroe County just to make sure that I didn't put his picture into the wrong cemetery folder and I can find nothing.  I am fairly certain that he was buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery, but I can not find any record.

He does have a Freemason symbol carved into the top portion of his headstone.  It appears to be carved into an open book.  I am not sure of the significance of both of these together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the grave of Henrietta Burch Walker.
Born:  April 20, 1805, Tennessee
Died: September 17, 1844, Monroe County, Indiana
She was the wife of Elmore Walker (1800-1851).  He is buried near her in Walker's Chapel Cemetery.
They had eleven children according to one source, but there are only three listed:
Martha Smith Walker Sullivan (1825-1905) - buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
George Washington Walker (1828-1901) - buried in Walker's Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Elmore F. Walker (1842-1925) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 These are the final two graves on our walk.  The one on the right is barely legible as I can only read the name John and the birth year of 1805 and death year of 1885.  I can't find anything at Walker's Chapel that corresponds to those dates.  As for the one on the left, it was far too worn to make out.
