Old Dutch Church Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Old Dutch Church Cemetery near Stinesville, Monroe County, Indiana.  It is located off of Old Dutch Church Road near the church itself.

I am not entirely sure when the cemetery itself was established, but there is a sign at the church that shows the date of 1835.  This is most likely the date that the original log church was built on this property.  At the time, it was called the St. John's Lutheran Church and all of the services were in German as it was settled by a group of German settlers somewhere around 1820.  Many of these early settlers are buried in this cemetery.

There are carvings in the top corners of her gravestone that look like suns, but I can't be sure.  The sun symbolizes a soul rising to heaven.

The Shawver family is listed as one of the first settlers of this area.

He was married to Clara Manbeck Shawver (1804-1895) on November 8, 1821.  I believe that her name is carved on the opposite side of his marker.

He and his wife came to Indiana when five of their children were still young and settled on a farm five miles west of Bloomington on what is now known as the Sam Curry Farm.  His wife was very religious and became dissatisfied that there was no church near so they sold their farm and moved to and area near Old Dutch Church.

His parents were Johann Frantz Sammet (1741-1818).  He is buried in Saint John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Catawba County, North Carolina.  He is a German immigrant and changes his name to Francis Summit.  His German last name Sammet has a couple of different meanings.  First is that it is derived from the German word Samt which means "velvet.  Secondly, it is an acronym in Hebrew that means "turns from the evil and do good things".   His mother was named Dolly, but other than that there is no information.

This is the grave for Marion Summitt.

Born: March 26, 1841
Died: January 11, 1871

There are two different books carved into her grave marker.  There is an open book which generally symbolizes ones faith.  The closed book, however, denotes a completed life.  It is interesting to see both of these on a headstone.

The inscription on her marker reads, "Aged 29Y, 9M, 16D".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the final grave on our walk.  There is a dove carved into the headstone which symbolizes Peace, or the messenger of God.
I can't read the name or dates on the stone.  It has been repaired at least once.
