Allen's Creek Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Allen's Creek Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.  It is located off of E. Allen's Creek Road in the Hoosier National Forest.

GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 39.03248, Longitude: -86.41996

This cemetery was created when the Monroe Lake project began.  The Army Corps of Engineers needed to move as many cemeteries as possible so this cemetery was created.  It is the combination of several different cemeteries, some of which only partially were moved before the lake was flooded.  There are the Blackwell Cemetery, the Cutright Cemetery, the Daniel Fox Cemetery, the Goodman Cemetery, the Hughes Cemetery, the Macy W. Malott Cemetery, the Mitchell Cemetery, and the Shields Cemetery.

Here is the grave of R.A. Lanning.

Born: September 26, 1815
Died: unknown

The inscription looks like it says, "Aged 41y, 16mths, 5days" but it's worn and hard to read.  Normally, when looking at these stones, the date that is shown is the death date and not the birth date.

This is the grave of George Pate.

Born: September 1835, France
Died: February 28, 1903

His parents are listed as Abagos (1804-?) and Teresa Pate (1808-?).  It looks like both of them were born in France, but I am unsure as to where they are buried.

He arrived in the United States on January 4, 1853 at the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana with his parents and three siblings, having come from the Port of Le Havre, France.

He had at least three siblings:

Unknown Pate (?-?) - unknown

He was married to Sarah Ann Frye Pate (1843-1906) on May 5, 1856 in Bloomington, Indiana.  Their ceremony was presided over by a Methodist Minister by the name of E.P. Shields.  She is buried in Allen's Creek Cemetery.

They had ten children:

On October 4, 1858, he applied to be a US Citizens.  In 1862, he enrolled in the 27th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Company G as a Private, but he was put into Company A instead.  While serving in 1864 at Tullahoma, Tennessee, George was ordered with some others to cover up an officer's latrine.  While doing this, a limb penetrated his right ear to about two inches in depth.  From this injury, he lost his hearing and was treated at the Regimental Hospital in Tullahoma, Tennessee.  It is possible that he may have been sent home from there.

His obituary was listed in the Bloomington Courier, March 3, 1903:
"George Pate a farmer and old soldier, died late Saturday night at his home in Salt Creek township after a lingering illness.  He was 66 years old and was born in France.  He came to this country when a boy and enlisted in the Civil War service.  He leaves a wife and several children.  The funeral was held at one o'clock this afternoon at the Hughes School house, in charge of, Elder James Baxter."

She was married to William Henry Shields (1819-1901).  His name is carved on the opposite side of the marker.  They were married on January 12, 1842.

They had nine children, but I only have listings for six:

Her obituary was listed in the Bloomington Telephone, February 24, 1899:
"Mrs. William Shields, one of the best known ladies in Monroe County, Died at her home near Moore's Creek Wednesday, of lung trouble, after a brief illness.  Mrs. Shields was 76 years of age and a lady loved and respected by all who knew her.  She leaves a husband and nine children to mourn her demise - Mrs. A.J. This is the grave of Sarah Sherrill Shields.

Born: unknown
Died: 1878

She was the wife of John Shields (?-?).  I am unsure as to where he is buried.

She was originally buried in the Shields Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana, but was moved to the Allen's Creek Cemetery when Monroe Lake was built.  Shields Cemetery is considered Defunct.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the grave of her husband, James Smith.
Born: July 20, 1814
Died: April 22, 1898
There is an open book carved into the top of his gravestone.  This could symbolize his being a religious man or just his faith.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is the grave of David P. Wampler.

Born: April 13, 1851
Died: May 15, 1851

He was the son of of J. Wampler (?-?) and R. Wampler (?-?).  I am unsure of any of the information about his parents.

He was originally buried in the Hughes Cemetery and was moved to the Allen's Creek Cemetery in 1965 when Monroe Lake construction was started.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the grave of John G. Wampler.
Born: January 2, 1826, Wythe County, Virginia
Died: December 27, 1865, Smithville, Monroe County, Indiana
He was the son of Michael Wampler (1798-1852) and Elizabeth Betsy Copenhaver Wampler (1803-1891).  They were buried at the Hughes Cemetery, which is now defunct, and were moved to Allen's Creek Cemetery in the 1960s.
He had two brothers that I could find:
David Martin Wampler (1834-1914) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
William Wampler (?-?) - unknown
He married Rebecca Ann Cutright (1824-1909) on February 01, 1841.  She is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Together, they had eight children:
Mary Rebecca Wampler (?-?) - unknown
Emma Christina Wampler Hardy (1862-?) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana, though the location of her headstone is unknown.
Sarah F. Wampler Holland (?-?) - unknown
He served in the Civil War in the 32nd Regiment of the Indiana Infantry as a Private, though I am unsure what Company he served in.  He enlisted with his brother William and his nephew Henry.  After the war, he returned home and, unfortunately, was murdered at his home in 1865.  He was buried in the Paynetown Cemetery, but his grave was relocated to Allen's Creek with the construction of Monroe Lake.
There is an interesting quote from a newspaper in print at the time.  It is unknown what newspaper or when:
"A short time after arriving home from the Civil War, John G. Wampler was stabbed to death by a man whom he had raised in his home.  This occurred while trying to remove the man from his home due to the man's drunken condition.  The stabbing actually occurred in front of a grocery store in Smithville, Indiana and Mr. Wampler bled to death on the counter of the store.  The man, Dave Gray, disappeared immediately and was never seen again.  Rebecca Wampler, who was Mr. Wampler's widow, sold the farm to use the money to find her husband's killer, but she never did."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave of Merica K. Wampler.

Born: 1853
Died: 1857

She was the daughter of D. Wampler (?-?) & D. Wampler (?-?).  I am unsure of any information about her parents.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the grave of Anderson J. Chambers.
Born: January 16, 1856, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: March 4, 1856, Monroe County, Indiana
He was originally buried in the Blackwell-Chambers-Prince Cemetery but was moved to Allen's Creek Cemetery when the Monroe Lake Construction began.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 These graves were all very badly damages or worn so much that I could not read them.  The grave on the right appears to be for someone named Martha who was born on October 23, 1826 and died on November 28, 1864.  There is a hand pointing up to symbolize going home.
 The grave on the left is for someone named John P.  But the grave is so badly damaged and I can find no reference at this cemetery.

The grave at the bottom was found broken and sitting on top of another grave.  It seemed sad to leave it without record, so I took a photo of it.
