New South Park Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville, Indiana.  It is also known as Green Lawn Cemetery and South Park Cemetery.



This is the largest cemetery in Martinsville with just under 7,100 interments.  There are actually three separate cemeteries in this same location.  I have seen listings showing that this is the oldest cemetery in Martinsville, but I didn't find too many old graves here.  There is a large mausoleum near one of the entrances, but it was locked the day that we got there.

Our first stop is at the grave of Captain Clarke S. Crary.

Born: March 21, 1845
Died: September 22, 1904

He served in the 130 Illinois Infantry, Company A.

He was married to Sarah A. Crary, who is listed just below him on the headstone.
Born: March 24, 1847
Died: July 21, 1925

They had at least two children:
Pearl Crary James (?-?) - unknown
Minnie B. Crary (?-?) - unknown

Here is the Eslinger family monument.

There are at least three graves around this monument.  They are as follows:

William H. Eslinger would be the first, possibly the patron of the family.
Born: 1841
Died: January 27, 1929

His wife, I believe, is nearby, Julia A. Eslinger.
Born: 1842
Died: 1908

and finally, Alonzo M. Eslinger, who may be a their son.
Born: 1870
Died: 1939

Our next stop is at the massive Mitchell family monument.  There are many names shown here and we will go over each one.

First is the name of James V. Mitchell.
Born: October 15, 1842
Died: May 26, 1915

He is listed as a Civil War veteran, but I am not sure what regiment or company he served with.

Next is Ella F. Mitchell, James' wife.
Born: August 25, 1838
Died: July 16, 1896

Next is Alice L. Mitchell, also listed as James' wife.
Born: 1854
Died: 1914

Next is Ada M. Mitchell.  I am not sure what her relation is to the others.
Born: 1847
Died: 1869

Finally, on this side, is Dick Draper Mitchell.  I haven't found his relation to any of the others.
Born: 1866
Died: 1915

We now move on to the next side.  The first name is Edgar V. Mitchell.
Born: March 5, 1852
Died: unknown

Next is his wife, Mary E. Everson Mitchell.
Born: unknown
Died: unknown


Next is Emma E. Mitchell.
Born: 1878
Died: 1898

Just under her is J.M. Mitchell.
Born: 1875
Died: 1910

Next is Maud P. Mitchell.  She is listed as being the wife of J.M. Mitchell.
Born: 1875
Died: 1902

Lastly, on this side of the monument, is that of Beatrice Mitchell, the daughter of J.M. and Maud Mitchell.
Born: 1898
Died: 1902

We now move to the next side with the first name listed being Charles J. Mitchell.
Born: May 14, 1857
Died: unknown

His wife is listed next, Mary E. Lindsay Mitchell.
Born: 1869
Died: 1903

Next is Charles E. Mitchell.
Born: 1880
Died: 1949

Here is Charles E. Mitchell's wife, Bessie B. Mitchell.

Lastly, on this side, is that of Mary I. Mitchell.

The next side of the monument starts with Albert S. Mitchell.

Born: May 27, 1845
Died: September 26, 1903

He is listed as a Civil War veteran, but there is no information for what regiment or company.

Just under his name is that of Clara G. Reston Mitchell, the wife of Albert S. Mitchell listed above.
Born: September 21, 1848
Died: October 25, 1881

Next is Fred W. Mitchell, the son of Albert S. and Clara G. Mitchell.
Born: February 1, 1875
Died: November 22, 1888

Lastly is Albert B. Mitchell, the son of Albert S. and Clara G. Mitchell.
Born: October 16, 1877
Died: August 8, 1879

We now move to the next side of the monument and the first name of Sallie I. Mitchell Stout.
Born: April 23, 1859
Died: April 7, 1903

The next name is that of W.A. Stout, Sallie's husband.
Born: unknown
Died: April 7, 1903.

They died on the same day, but I have no information as to what happened to them.

Next is Wesley A. Stout.
Born: December 7, 1857
Died: unknown

Next is W. Morris H. Stout, the son of Wesley and Sallie Stout.
Born: February 14, 1896
Died: December 8, 1896

Next is Dick M. Stout, another son of Wesley and Sallie Stout.
Born: February 14, 1885
Died: August 8, 1885

Finally is M. May Stout, a daughter of Wesley and Sallie Stout.
Born: October 12, 1886
Died: November 20, 1887

The next side of the monument starts with James Madison Mitchell.
Born: November 28, 1809
Died: July 8, 1885

Just under his name is that of his wife, Mary A. Scott Mitchell.
Born: December 24, 1821
Died: January 5, 1894

Next is that of their son, Giles Mitchell.
Born: November 14, 1847
Died: July 11, 1848

Next is Laura A. Mitchell.
Born: September 7, 1854
Died: August 30, 1858

Lastly is Fannie Mitchell.
Born: January 7, 1862
Died: October 15, 1862

We now come to the last side of the monument and the only name listed, John K. Mitchell.
Born: November 7, 1840
Died: December 21, 1889

I am not sure of the relations of some of them as their is no information.

Our final stop is at that of Hannibal Young.

Born: 1839
Died: April 7, 1904

He served in the Civil War in the 33rd Indiana Infantry, Company H.  He mustered into service on September 16, 1861.  I am not sure when he mustered out.

Hilldale Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Hilldale Cemetery in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana.




Hilldale Cemetery is a well-taken care of cemetery located just outside of downtown Martinsville on East Morgan Street.  It was established in 1868 and has just over 2,600 interments.  There are many lovely graves in this cemetery and an interesting section of nothing but Civil War memorial graves.

Our first stop is at the memorial headstone of David R. Badgley.

Born: 1822
Died: July 18, 1864

He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Badgley (1770-1844) and Deborah Radcliff Badgley (1787-1870).  They are both buried in Greer Cemetery Green Township in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana.

He had fifteen siblings, though I only have the following names: 
Clarissa Badgely Butterfield (1810-1876) - buried in Old Butterfield Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
Benjamin Franklin Badgley (1819-1877) - buried in Greer Cemetery Green Township, Morgan County, Indiana.
Drusilla Badgley Greer (1831-1917) - buried in Quaker Cemetery, Montomgery County, Kansas.

He was married to Rhoda Porter Badgley (?-?).  I am unsure as to where she is buried.

They had one child:
Virocha Badgley (?-?) - unknown

He served in the 90th Indiana Regiment/5th Indiana Cavalry, Company F, as a Saddler. He mustered into service on August 18, 1862 in Waverly, Indiana.  David is not actually buried in this cemetery.  His headstone is only a memorial stone, which is located among appoximately 20 other memorial headstones.  He is most likely buried in Andersonville Prison Cemetery in Andersonville, Sumpter County, Georgia.

Here we have the grave of Peter Boaz.

Died: April 2, 1870

He was the son of Catherina Tresslar Boaz (1815-1859) and John Cyrus Boaz (1809-1868).  They were married on May 23, 1834 in Johnson County, Indiana.  She is buried in Tresslar Cemetery in Old Bargersville, Johnson County, Indiana, though I am not sure where he is buried.

He had several siblings:
Joanna Fanny Boaz Koiner (1836-1928) - buried in Soldiers and Sailors Cemetery, Hall County, Nebraska (she has a memorial headstone)
Milton Cyrus Boaz (1839-1909) - buried in Deer Cemetery, Johnson County, Indiana.
Louisa Boaz (?-?) - unknown

He served in the 142nd Indiana Infantry, Company K.  He enlisted as a Private on October 20, 1864 and mustered out on July 14, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Here we have the memorial headstone for Andrew J. Breese.

Born: September 16, 1825
Died: November 27, 1903

He served in the Civil War in the 21st Indiana Infantry/1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, Company K, as a Private.  He mustered into service in Waverly, Indiana on July 24, 1861 and out of service on January 10, 1866.

His headstone is located with approximately 20 other memorial headstones.

He served in the Civil War in the 32nd Illinois Infantry, Company H.  He is listed as having been a bachelor.

Born: 1845
Died: November 22, 1909

He served in the Civil War in the 17th Indiana Infantry, Company I.  He was recruited in Sullivan, Indiana on March 10, 1864.  He mustered out on August 8, 1865.

His headstone is located with approximately 20 other memorial headstones.

Here is the grave of Archibald Cramer.

Born: July 25, 1803, Morris County, New Jersey
Died: May 7, 1883, Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana

He was married to Margaret Stephens Cramer (1803-1886) on June 26, 1826.  Her name is shown next to his on the monument in Hilldale Cemetery in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana. 

They had six children:
Sarah Cramer Shireman (1827-1905) - buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
George Whitfield Cramer (1829-1908) - buried in New South Park Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
Emaline Cramer Elliott (1832-1911) - buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
Dayton Decker Cramer (1836-1897) buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
William Stephens Cramer (1841-1925) buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana (he is listed as having been wounded in the shoulder during the Battle of Resaca, Georgia in 1864).
Nelson Cramer (1844-1926) - buried in New South Park Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.

This is the grave of Maggie J. Miller Cramer.

Died: June 16, 1871

She was married to Dayton Decker Cramer (1836-1897) on January 16, 1867.  He is buried in Hilldale Cemetery near her. She was his first wife.

She had three children, though I only have two names:
Eva Cramer Elliott Miller (1869-1940) buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
Henry M. Cramer (1871-1872) buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.

Born: 1800, Pennsylvania
Died: 1892, Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana

She was married to James Crawford (1798-1872).  He is buried in Hilldale Cemetery with her.  His name is shown on the other side of the monument (pictured left).  James was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1850-1851 and was partly responsible for the drafting of the Indiana State Constitution.  

They had two children:
James A. Crawford (1829-1868) - buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Coles County, Illinois.
Joseph Crawford (1840-1874) buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.

He was the son of James Crawford (1798-1872) and Delilah Gray Crawford (1800-1892).  They are buried in Hilldale Cemetery as well.

He had at least one sibling:
James A. Crawford (1829-1868) - buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Coles County, Illinois.

He was married to Rosanna Sutton Crawford (1848-1870). They were married on May 11, 1865 in Morgan County, Indiana.  She is buried next to him at Hilldale Cemetery in Morgan County, Indiana (pictured right).  She is listed as having died of consumption.  

They had at least one child:
Hattie Crawford Caldwell (1866-1945) buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.

The first name listed on this monument is John Pauley Egbert.

He is the son of James Egbert (1798-1868) and Sarah Brandenburg Egbert (1808-1875).  They are both buried in Williams Bradford Cemetery in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana.

He has many siblings:

She was the daughter of Anthony Hussey (?-?) and Hannah Griffith Hussey (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they are buried.

Julia and John had at least two children:
Dora E. Egbert Buden (1853-1917) - buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
Oscar J. Egbert (1856-1885) - buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana (he died of typhoid fever in his home in Norfolk, Nebraska).

He was a Sergeant in the Civil War in the 33rd Indiana Infantry, Company A.  He enlisted on September 16, 1861 and was discharged on September 17, 1864 with a disability.

He was the son of George Daniel Golay (1800-1881) and Elizabeth Hall Golay (1802-1875).  They are buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana.

He had at several siblings:

Alzora Golay (?-?) - unknown

He was married to Susan F. Colvin Golay (1851-1924).  They were married on December 8, 1878.  She is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay, Coos County, Oregon.  It is shown that she left her husband and was living near her son who was working a logging job in Seaside, Oregon.

They had two children:

Harry Golay (?-?) - unknown

He served in the Civil War in the 137th Indiana Infantry, Company I.  According the roster list, he was in Company B and he mustered into service on May 26, 1864 and then out when the term expired.

They had at least one child:
Ebenezer Henderson (1833-1917) - buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana (he was Indiana State Auditor from 1875-1879 and Indiana State Senator 1869-1871)

He served in the Civil War in the 27th Indiana Infantry, Company G.  He was listed as a First Sergeant but when he mustered out on September 1, 1864, he was a private.  Further information states that he was wounded at Cedar Mountain, Culpepper County, Virginia.  You can read more about this battle here.

There is a John W. Miller listed in the roster records for the 11th Indiana Infantry, Company I.  It shows that he mustered into service on August 31, 1861.  The only remark is "veteran".  I do not have a muster out date.

She had at least one sibling:
Daniel P. Hayward (1819-1859) - buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.

She was married to William B. Orner (1815-1870) on December 13, 1870.  He is buried in Hilldale Cemetery in Morgan County, Indiana.

They had six children, though I only found the name of one so far:
George W. Orner (1848-1927) - buried in Oakland Cemetery, Webster County, Iowa.

He was the son of James Lafayette Parks (1781-1883).  He is buried in Presbyterian Cemetery in Ellettsville, Monroe County, Indiana.

He had several siblings:
Rachel P. Parks Noel (1809-1885) - buried in Rockville Cemetery, Parke County, Indiana.
Elijah Moore Parks (1828-1907) - buried in Hernando Memorial Park, DeSoto County, Mississippi.
James M. Parks (1831-1909) - buried in Presbyterian Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

He was married to Lucinda Hite Parks (1813-1875).  She is shown on the other side of monument in Hilldale Cemetery in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana.

They had nine children:
Marietta Parks Simpson (?-?) - unknown

He was a businessman in Martinsville, but soon became a State Senator in 1841, serving six consecutive years.  For a while he served as a bank president in Martinsville.

He had several siblings:
Sarah Estaline Tomey Tomey David (1831-1882) - buried in Bear Creek Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
John Michael Tomey (1834-1919) - buried in New South Park Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
Rachel S. Tomey Thomas (1838-1920) - buried in Lake Creek Union Cemetery, Labette County, Kansas.
Indiana Tomey Hubbard (1842-1872) - buried in Stepp Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

He served in the Civil War in the 27th Indiana Infantry, Company G.  He mustered into service on September 12, 1861.  He was imprisoned at some point at Belle Isle Virginia and paroled on September 7, 1862.  He returned to his regiment on April 23, 1863.  He missed some of his service due to illness and a fractured ankle.  He was finally mustered out on September 12, 1864.

He was the son of Jesse Harris Wells (1796-1850) and Mary Ann Moore Wells (1797-1873).  They were buried in Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery in Trafalgar, Johnson County, Indiana.

He had a few siblings:
Julia Wells Collett (1819-1895) - buried in East Hill Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
William J. Wells (1841-1873) - buried in Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery, Johnson County, Indiana.
Pheriba H. Wells (1844-1844) - buried in Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery, Johnson County, Indiana.

He served in the Civil War in the 27th Indiana Infantry, Company G.   He mustered into service on September 12, 1861.  I am not sure when her mustered out of service.
