Mahalasville Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Mahalasville Cemetery in Mahalasville, Morgan County, Indiana.

Pictured above is the monument that was erected for the Mahalasville Methodist Episcopal Church.  It was established in 1855 and possibly removed in 1969.  I did not see where there had been a church on this lot, so I am not sure exactly where it was at.  We visited this cemetery on October 9, 2015.  It is well taken care of and has just under 300 interments.

According to a history of the area, the town of Mahalasville, which no longer exists, was originally called Vansickel and was located in the area where the cemetery is.  It thrived on the railroad service which eventually dried up.  There was a mill in town which was built in the 1840's and burnt down in 1922.   The stone foundation blocks are still there, though we didn't see them when we were there.  The feed store in town burnt down in 1936, both of the churches were torn down and the old blacksmith shop had become a garden.  When Jacob Vansickel bought the land and the mill in 1851, he renamed the town Mahalasville after his wife.  The first post office was open by Jacob Vansickel in 1854.  David Haase built an early distillery nearby, but moved it later on.  There were many businesses and even four doctors that served this town at one time.  Now nothing remains but the monument to the church.
