Hamblen-Taylor Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Hamblen-Taylor Cemetery in Brown County, Indiana.  It is located on Sweetwater Trail and is a very small family cemetery.

This small cemetery is located off near Taggart, Indiana in Brown County.  It is very small with only about 10 interments.  It has been taken care of and fenced off, but there is a small gate and a little grave spot to park in.  It is an important cemetery in the history of Brown County as the founder of Hamblen Township is buried here.

This is a newer memorial to Job Hamblen.

Born: July 14, 1762
Died: September 1, 1833

He was married to Eleanor Mullings Hamblen (1765-1852).  They were married in 1782.  Her grave is in Hamblen-Taylor Cemetery with her husband.

They had several children:
John Mullins Hamblen (1783-1867) - buried in Campbell Cemetery, Lee County, Virginia.
Uriah Lock Hamblen (1787-1864) - buried in Locust Grove Cemetery, Jefferson County, Illinois.
George Hamblen (1789-?) - unknown
William Hamblen (1793-?) - unknown
Eliakim Hamblen (1796-1852) - buried in Taggart Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
Eleanor Hamblen Lock (1799-1863) - her burial site is listed as being unknown.
Sarah Hamblen Barnett Taylor (1802-?) - buried in Hamblen-Taylor Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
Mary Hamblen Lock (1805-?) - unknown

According to the memorial stone, Job Hamblen established his residence 145 yards to the east of the stone.  He and his family were the first settlers to the area and the township bears his name.

He served in the Revolutionary War from 1779-1782 under Captain John Tabb in Colonel Dabney's Virginia Militia.  He was a participant in the siege and surrender of the British in Yorktown, Virginia on October 18, 1781.

At the base of the memorial is an arrow that points down to Job Hamblen's memorial marker for his service in the Revolutionary War, while on the other side of the front is an arrow that points down to the unmarked fieldstone for his wife, Eleanor Mullings Hamblen.
