Carter's Chapel Cemetery

Hello all!  Sorry for the extended break between posts.  My knee has not been taking activity well so I have been working on craft projects and things for my Etsy shop and upcoming craft fairs.  I hope with the rest and my new friend, a polka dot cane, I can get out and about again when the weather cools down this fall.  But for now, let's venture back to Bartholomew County, Indiana for today's Walk Through the Tombstones at Carter's Chapel Cemetery.

GPS Coordinates: 39.2439003, -85.9419022

Carter's Chapel Cemetery is located directly across the US31 North from Carter's Chapel Cemetery.  They may have at one time been part of the same cemetery.  The highway separates them so Carter Cemetery may have been a part that was relocated.  I am not completely sure as I really haven't found much information.  I just know that they older section is the one that we are focusing on today.

This cemetery is known as Carter Cemeteries, Carter Cemetery, Carter's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Cemetery.  It all makes it rather confusing when it comes down to it, especially since all of the graves for both cemeteries are listed under one heading on Find-A-Grave.  Makes it tough to separate where burials are.  But I think I have it all situated, so off we go.

~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of Nancy Alexander.
Born: December 17, 1810
Died: June 17, 1847
She was the wife of William Alexander (1805-1899).  They were married in 1838, but he he buried with his third wife in the VanCurren Cemetery in Kosciusko County, Indiana.
I have no information about her family other than her marriage to William.
Here is the grave of Charles Armouth.
Born: June 24, 1853
Died: October 13, 1880
I have no information on him and there are no other Armouth's buried in Carter's Chapel or Carter Cemetery.
We now come to the grave of Benjamin Franklin Arnold.
Born: August 31, 1805
Died: November 23, 1840
He was the son of Ephraim Arnold, Sr. (1771-1833) and Mary Ellenor/Elinor/Eleanor Redman/Redmond Arnold (1776-1837).  They were married on August 20, 1795 at Ellcott's Mills, Maryland and are both buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.  Ephraim Sr. was an associate judge in Bartholomew County, Indiana, though I am not sure how long he held that position.
He had several siblings:
Evan/Even Arnold (1796-1831) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Elizabeth Arnold Rogers (1798-1895) - buried in Rogers Cemetery, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
Sarah Arnold Spurgin (1800-1843) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Nancy Arnold Rogers (1803-1864) - buried in Door Village Cemetery, Door Village, LaPorte County, Indiana
Ephraim Arnold, Jr. (1812-1848) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Maria Louisa Arnold Bollman (1814-1897) - buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana
Infant Arnold (1832-1832) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Infant Arnold (1833-1833) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
He was married twice.  His first wife was Susannah Carter Arnold (1803-1825).  They were married in 1825 and she is buried near him in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.
His second wife was Huldah Arnold (1813-1846).  They were married in 1829 and she is buried near him in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.
They had at least two children:
George Washington Arnold (1830-1889) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana (he served in the Civil War in Company H, 53rd Indiana Infantry)
Thomas Hinkson Arnold (1831-1918) - buried in Twin Falls Cemetery, Twin Halls County, Idaho
Here we have the grave of Elizabeth Arnold.
Born: June 1, 1825, Hamilton County, Ohio
Died: January 27, 1846
She is listed as being the wife of William Franklin Arnold (1826-1851).  Her headstone said that she died after a long and painful illness.  He is buried near her in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.
This is the grave of Elizabeth Rachel Peddrick Arnold.
Born: March 5, 1841
Died: September 26, 1866
She was the daughter of Jonathan Peddrick (1788-1844) and Mary Irwin Peddrick (?-1842).  They are both buried nearby in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.
Joseph B. Peddrick (1839-1909) - buried in Columbus City Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Mary Mariah Peddrick (1842-1843) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
She was married to Thomas Hinkson Arnold (1831-1918) in 1855.  He is buried in Twin Falls Cemetery, Twin Falls, Twin Falls County, Idaho.
They had a few children:
Doctor J. Frank Arnold (1857-1883) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Infant Daughter Arnold (1861-1861) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Jessie May Arnold (1864-1915) - buried in Twin Falls Cemetery, Twin Falls, Twin Falls County, Idaho
Johnie Arnold (1866-1873) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Her headstone is a little confusing as the name Rachel is listed at the top, in the outer ring, while Elizabeth is listed above her husband's name.  This looks to me like her name is Rachel Elizabeth Peddrick Arnold, but I am not sure.
We now come to the grave of Ephraim Arnold, Sr.
Born: September 5, 1771, Maryland
Died: February 19, 1833
He was married to Mary Ellenor/Elinor/Eleanor Redman/Redmond Arnold (1776-1837).  They were married on August 20, 1795 at Ellcott's Mills, Maryland and are both buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.
I don't know the name of his parents, though I did read that they were of English heritage, possibly born in England and immigrated to the United States (the colonies at the time).
He had a brother named Thomas Arnold (?-?), but I don't know anything about him.
Ephraim Sr. was an associate judge in Bartholomew County, Indiana, though I am not sure how long he held that position.
They had many children:
Evan/Even Arnold (1796-1831) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Infant Arnold (1832-1832) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Infant Arnold (1833-1833) - buried in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
He served in the War of 1812 as a volunteer under General Willian Henry Harrison and was seriously wounded in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.  You can read more about him here.
This lovely headstone belongs to Ephraim Arnold, Jr.
Born: April 2, 1812, Clark County, Indiana
He was married to Edith Perry Arnold (1814-1889) on January 12, 1832 in Bartholomew County, Indiana.  She is buried near him in Carter's Chapel Cemetery, though her grave is not marked.
They had seven children, though I have only found the names of two:
Napoleon Bonaparte Arnold (1845-1929) - buried in Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas (he was an attorney in Topeka; an article about him says "he is a Democrat of the old school, who has no use for rainbow chasers or fanatical worshippers of false gods".)
We now come to the grave of Mary Ellenor/Elinor/Eleanor Redman/Redmond Arnold.
Born: October 10, 1776, Montgomery County, Maryland
Died: March 22, 1837, Bartholomew County, Indiana
She was the daughter of Benjamin Redman (1750-1836) and Ann/Anne Wynn (?-?).  He has a military marker in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.  I am not sure where she is buried.  According to a family history, he died in a flood in 1833 when he was visiting his daughter, Mary.  Another history says that he was "well as usual, until 3 o'clock PM, when he complained a little, and desired to see William Arnold, his grandson".  He while later he told his grandson, "William I am going and I am glad of it" then "expired immediately without a groan".  These seem to be two completely different causes of death with different dates.  The second cause of death matches the date on his headstone.  While alive, he served in the Revolutionary War under General George Washington at Valley Forge.
She had several siblings:
Rezin/Rezen Redman (1778-1837) - buried in Freeland Cemetery, Henderson County, Illinois (fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe)
She was married to Ephraim Arnold, Sr. (1771-1833).  He is buried near her in Carter's Chapel Cemetery.
They had several children:
