Greenwood Cemetery

Hello!  Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.6164830, -86.1167620

This cemetery is a very large, active, public cemetery located on the south side of Greenwood.  There are around 14, 500 interments and the cemetery is broken into two sections.  As you drive in, you have the option to go straight forward which will take you back to the newer section of the cemetery.  We followed this path when we visited, not realizing that the new section of the cemetery is not connected in anyway to the older section.  The older section, which is in the front where the sign is requires a rather uncomfortable left-hand turn to enter, so we pulled into their upon our exit from the newer section as it was far easier.

The cemetery has many beautiful monuments and has a specific section up near the front fence where there is a reproduction cannon and several veterans monuments, all from the Civil War as far as I could tell.

~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of J.T. Alexander
Born: unknown
Died: unknown
He served in the Civil War in Company F, 5th Indiana Cavalry Regiment.  His enlistment date is shown as February 14, 1894 in Greenwood, Indiana.  He mustered out on June 15, 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee.
I found an article snippet from 1887 where it says that he and several others were moved to the "new cemetery" by the G.A.R.  Makes me wonder where he was originally buried.
~~~

Here is the grave of Louis/Lewis Andis.
Born: 1845, Indiana
Died: 1864

He was the son of Lilbourne L. Andis (1820-1886) and Julia Ann Simpson (1817-1880/1885.  They were married on August 23, 1838 in Rush County, Indiana.  He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas.  Her burial location us unknown, but I find a note that she died from consumption.

He had several siblings:
William Andis (1840-1880~) - unknown
George Andis (1848-1851) - buried in an unmarked grave in Surface Cemetery, Johnson County, Indiana (this cemetery is also known as Mount Auburn Cemetery, likely near his Louis)
Issac Andis (1852-1900~) - unknown

According to a newspaper clipping, he was killed by the accidental discharge of a gun while troops were boarding a train in Greenwood.  He was buried originally in Mount Auburn Cemetery but was moved to the Greenwood Cemetery in the summer of 1898.

He enlisted in Company G of the 132nd Indiana Infantry on May 18, 1864.  Contrary to the news article above, the roster says "supposed mustered out, term expired".  He did only enlist for the 100 days volunteers, but the above article makes it sound like he was killed before his term ever officially started.

We now stop at the grave of Lafayette Talbert Averitt.
Born: November 24, 1853, Trimble County, Kentucky
Died: July 30, 1936, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

He was the son of William Bracket Averitt (1830-1912).  He is buried in Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Trimble County, Kentucky.  I have found some confusion concerning Lafayette's mother.  A family genealogy that I found lists that William was married twice; first to Elizabeth Jane Peak Averitt (1838-1911); second to Martha Bates Averitt (1851-?).  An obituary I found for Lafayette says that his mother died when he was eight years old, therefore his mother died in 1861/1862.  With that knowledge, I can't see that either one of the above listed women could be his birth mother.  Elizabeth was buried with William in Bedford Cemetery, but I am unsure as to where Martha was buried.

He had several siblings:
Luther F. Averitt (1852-1912) - buried in Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Trimble County, Kentucky
Thomas George Averitt (1866-1942) - buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana
Joseph C. Averitt (1869-1903) - buried in Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Trimble County, Kentucky

Here we have the grave of Lieutenant Cyrus R. Hunter.
Born: October 23, 1826
Died: October 30, 1862

He was a solider in the Civil War, having enlisted on September 12, 1861 as a First Lieutenant.  He was commissioned on December 31, 1861 into Company H, 50th Indiana Infantry.   He died the following year, but I am not sure the circumstances.  This information is shown in the roster, though an obituary for his wife states that he was enlisted in the 51st Indiana Infantry in Company C. I don't believe that this information is correct as it is not in the roster.

I haven't found any names for his parents or siblings.

His wife was Margaret M. Mann Hunter (1836-1915) and her headstone is on one side of his.

They had at least two children of their own and one they adopted:

We now stop at the grave of John W. Hutcherson.
Born: unknown
Died: unknown

He was a soldier in the 26th Indiana Infantry, Company E.   He lived in Waverly, Indiana and mustered into service on August 30, 1861.  He was discharged with disability on March 11, 1864.

His name is spelled Hutchison in the roster records, but it also spelled Hutchinson in a newspaper article.  His was one of the graves moved to Greenwood Cemetery in 1887 when a lot was donated by the G.A.R. post in Greenwood.  I have no idea where he was buried originally, nor what happened to his actual headstone as this is a memorial shield stone.

~~~~
Here we have the grave of Thomas J. Johnson.
Born: unknown
Died: unknown
He was a soldier in the 5th Indiana Cavalry, Company F.  The 5th Indiana Cavalry was also known as the 90th Indiana Regiment.  He lived in Greenwood and mustered into service on August 18, 1862.  He was promoted to Captain of Company A. 2nd North Carolina Infantry.  This is confusing as there doesn't appear to be a Union North Carolina division, only Confederate and his name is not in that roster.  I would think that is he was in that roster, that would mean he had defected to the other side.  It's possible that "Co. 'A' 2d N.C. Infantry" means something else, but I am not sure what.  I cannot find him listed as a Captain in the 90th Infantry/5th Cavalry.
I have no information for any of his family.
Here is the grave of Joel Law, Jr.
Born: 1827, Jefferson County, Indiana
Died: March 20, 1903, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
He was the son of Joel Law, Sr. (1813-1893).  He is buried in the Law Cemetery in Shelby County, Indiana.  I am not sure who Joel Jr. mother was as I haven't found her name, but what I did notice was that Joel Sr. was only fourteen when Joel Jr. was born.  I seriously doubt he was married at the time.
I know for certain of the following marriages for Joel Sr:
Susan M. Smith Law (1845-1870) - buried in Center Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana (married on May 23, 1967)
Edmonia/Edmoney Underwood Law (?-?) - unknown (married on July 31, 1873 [divorced in 1879] and again December 9, 1879 [divorced in 1885])
Susan D. Bushfield Law (?-?) - unknown (married June 21, 1892)
Rose E. Law Warble (1861-1959) - buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana (no marriage date)
Martha Shaw Law (?-?) - unknown (1831)
He had several siblings:
Willis Law (1832-1902) - buried in Eberhart Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana (his mother is likely Martha Shaw Law)
Zerilda A. Law Kendall (1839-1906) - buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Mount Auburn, Shelby County, Indiana. (her mother was Martha Shaw Law)
Albert T. Law (1868-1937) - buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana (his mother was Susan M. Smith Law)
Ethel May Law Hamner (1886-1946) - buried in Miller Cemetery, Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana (her mother is Rose E. Law Warble)
I know that Joel Jr. was married to Mariah E. Wright Law (?-?) on December 24, 1881 as there is a newspaper article from the The Daily Republican discussing Joel Jr. and his wife, Mrs. Wright.  You can read the entry here.  I don't know if they had any children or what the outcome of this argument was, though she did try to empty the house of her things and leave. I do know that Joel Jr. has at least one son and daughter, but I don't know anything about them so far.
Daughter Law (?-?) unknown
Son Law (?-?) - unknown
While, I was doing research on this particular entry I came across a myriad of wives for these men.  I have not yet been able to decipher whose was whose as it was not listed whether it was Jr. or Sr. in the marriage record for some of them.  I will do my best to list the information as found.  I am listing it for Joel Sr. as well, just to be as thorough as possible.
From an article in the Shelby Democrat, dated June 4, 1885; "Joel Law  has filed a suit for divorce from his wife, Edmonia Law, alleging cruel treatment and neglect of household duties.  The parties were divorced in 1879, and afterwards re-married.  Mrs. Law has filed a cross petition for divorce, custody of their child and $5,000 alimony.  Mr. Law is seventy-two years of age and Mrs. Law is about thirty."  This pertains to Joel Sr. since the advanced age and date would give him a birth date of 1813.  I also found her name twice in the marriage records for Shelby County, therefore I can safely see that she was Sr. wife twice.
I have also found the following marriages, though I am not sure if they are to Jr. or Sr.
Louisa Wheeler Law (?-?) - unknown (married on August 11, 1850)
Elizabeth Wilson Law (?-?) - unknown (married on January 1, 1867)
Rosetta Barnett Law (?-?) - unknown (married on September 12, 1885)
I'd like to think that Elizabeth Wilson Law was married to Joel Jr as it is only a few months from one of the dates for Joel Sr, but I can't be certain.
His obituary states that he died at the Hoyt Hotel of consumption.  He served in the Civil War in Company H of the 9th Indiana Cavalry.  He mustered into service on September 15, 1864 and out on July 13, 1865.
If anyone can help me decipher the marriages, please let me know.
Polk (1805-1877) and Sarah Shoptaw Polk (1805-1890).  He was originally buried in "the Catholic Cemetery" but was moved to the family plot according to an article in the Franklin Republican dated 1891.  I am not sure which cemetery it was referring to.  She is buried with him in Greenwood Cemetery.
He had at several siblings:
John A. Polk (1825-1910) - unknown (he was a member of the Indiana Legislature)
Colonel Burr Harrison Polk (1835-1886) - buried in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska (there is a picture of him here.)
James M. Polk (1837-?) - unknown (I believe he was born in Spencer County, Kentucky)
Eliza J. Polk Wood Carnes (1840-1915) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
William Lancaster Polk (1844-1918) - buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi
Elizabeth Francis A. Polk Wilson (1847-1908) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana (she is Charles' twin)
According to Charles' obituary, he was working on getting a packing house in order, when he found a gas leak.  The lantern sparked with the gas fumes which resulted in a explosion.  The injuries from said explosion were fatal.
He was married and had three children, though I haven't found reference to them beyond a note in the obituary.
Here we have the grave of Roy Rose.
Born: 1879
Died: 1964
There is a second headstone next to this one that has the name Richard T. Rose (1881-1887).  I assume that this was his brother that died.  I have no information on parents or siblings.
There appears to be a marking for the Freemasons to the left of his name.  The stone itself is interesting because it appears to be a alrge chunk of quartz.
~~~

We now come to the grave of William H. Rose.
Born: 1838
Died: 1931

He was married to Margaret Rose, whose name is listed below his one the headstone.
Born: 1842
Died: 1936

I don't know if there is any relation to Roy and Richard Rose mentioned above.  It is possible that they could have been children of William and Margaret.  I am not sure.

Here is the grave of Sarah Shoptaw Polk
Born: November 25/27, 1805, Nelson County, Kentucky
Died: February 3, 1890, Johnson County, Indiana

Her parents were Andrew Shoptaw (?-?) and Elizabeth Curtis Shoptaw (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they were buried or any names of siblings.

She was the wife of William E. Polk (1805-1877).  They were married on May 20, 1828 in Nelson County, Kentucky and moved to Johnson County, Indiana in 1856.  Her name is listed opposite his on the headstone in Greenwood Cemetery.

They had seven children:
John A. Polk (1825-1910) - unknown (he was a member of the Indiana Legislature)
Colonel Burr Harrison Polk (1835-1886) - buried in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska (there is a picture of him here.)
James M. Polk (1837-?) - unknown (I believe he was born in Spencer County, Kentucky)
Eliza J. Polk Wood Carnes (1840-1915) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
William Lancaster Polk (1844-1918) - buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi
Charles E. Polk (1847-1890) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana (he is Elizabeth's twin)
Elizabeth Francis A. Polk Wilson (1847-1908) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana (she is Charles' twin)

He was the newborn son of John Bryant Sheek (1817-1872) and Sarah "Sallie" Kinnick Sheek (1820-1889).  They were married on February 4, 1839 and are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

He would have had several siblings:
John T. Sheek (1833-?) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana (he is not listed in the family history)
Jacob Sheek (1840-1916) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Sarah Susan Sheek Brunnemer (1843-1902) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

Here is the grave of Ellen Smock Shortridge.
Born: 1820, Mercer County, Kentucky
Died: March 13, 1872, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

She was the daughter of John B. Smock (1790-1856) and Jane Brewer Smock (1796-1879).  They were married in 1814 and are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery in a section marked for Pioneers.

She had several siblings:
Ann Smock Smock Smock (1815-1904) - unknown (possibly in Iowa)
Simon V. Smock (1819-1864) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Clarinda C. Smock Brewer (1824-1897) - buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, Benton County, Iowa
James H. Smock (1825-?) - unknown
Elizabeth A. Smock Woods (1829-1876) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Catherine Smock Curd (1831-?) - unknown

She was married to John F. Shortridge (1818-1896).  His name is listed on the opposite side of the monument in Greenwood Cemetery.

They had three children:
Vandalina/Vandelene Shortridge Wishard/Washard (1840-1926) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
James Marshall Shortridge (1849-1920) - buried in Paul Hill Cemetery, St. Paul, Decatur County, Indiana
George Irillis Shortridge (1852-1883) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

~~~
Here is the grave of John F. Shortridge.
Born: March 20, 1818, Mercer County, Kentucky (possibly Wayne County, Indiana)
Died: December 16, 1896, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
He was the son of George Shortridge (1781-1852) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Shortridge Shortridge (1784-1872).  They were married around 1808 in Kentucky and are both buried in Lyons Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana.  They were cousins, though in that day it wasn't an uncommon thing, hence the same maiden and married name.  According to a family history that I found, the town of Germantown, in Wayne County, Indiana, was laid by George and was originally named Georgetown when it was recorded in 1827, but changed to Germantown and then recorded in 1844.  Not sure why the change.  George was listed as being a graduate of Georgetown College in Kentucky.
He had a few siblings:
Margaret Shortridge Sebern (?-1864) - buried in Lyons Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Ambrose Franklin Shortridge (1809-1896) - buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana
Harrison Shortridge (1809-1894) - buried in Delaware Cemetery, Lansing, Leavenworth County, Kansas
Vashti Shortridge Oldaker (1819-1877) - buried in Lyons Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Nancy Shortridge (?-?) - unknown
Sarah "Sally" Shortridge (?-?) - unknown (though I believe her name is listed on the monument with John in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana)
He was married to Ellen Smock Shortridge (1820-1872).  Her name is listed opposite his on the headstone.
They had three children:
Vandalina/Vandelene Shortridge Wishard/Washard (1840-1926) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
James Marshall Shortridge (1849-1920) - buried in Paul Hill Cemetery, St. Paul, Decatur County, Indiana
George Irillis Shortridge (1852-1883) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
~~~

Here we have the grave of Sarah Shortridge.
Born: 1837
Died: 1933

I believe that she was the sister of John F. Shortridge (1818-1896) as her name is listed on the same monument and there is only one Sarah that I can find.  I am not going to list any further information since I am not completely certain.  The information, is however, listed above.

~~~~~
We now stop at the grave of James M. Smith.
Born: 1826
Died: July 6, 1874
According to a newspaper article from The Franklin Republican dated May 1887, his grave was moved to the lot designated for old soldiers from his original burial site.  I am not sure where he was buried at or what company or regiment he served in.
I haven't found any information on his family.
Here we are at the grave of Simon V. Smock.
Born: 1819, Indiana
Died:  October 31, 1864, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
He mustered into service as a Wagoner on November 1, 1863 in Company M, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery.  He died while on leave at his home in Greenwood. The roster states his date of death as October 3, 1864, but doesn't say what he died of.
He was the son of John B. Smock (1790-1856) and Jane Brewer Smock 1796-1879).  They were married in 1814 and both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in the Pioneer Section.
He had several siblings:
Ann Smock Smock Smock (1815-1904) - unknown (possibly in Iowa)
Ellen Smock Shortridge (1820-1872) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Clarinda C. Smock Brewer (1824-1897) - buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, Benton County, Iowa
James H. Smock (1825-?) - unknown
Elizabeth A. Smock Woods (1829-1876) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Catherine Smock Curd (1831-?) - unknown
He was married to Phoebe Jane Smock (?-?).  I am unsure as to where she is buried or if they had any children.
~~~~

Here we are at the grave of Charity Smock Sorter.
Born: April 15, 1788, Kentucky
Died: May 18, 1860, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

She was the first wife of Garret/Garnet Sorter (1804-1870).  They were married in Johnson County, Indiana on July 14, 1831.  He is buried nearby in Greenwood Cemetery.  His name is spelled differently on the headstones, but it is spell Garret in an obituary in the Franklin Republican.

They had one child that I have found:
Cynthia Ellen Sorter Brown (1834-1855) - buried in Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Hopewell, Johnson County, Indiana  (she died around the same time her second child, David, was born, though for some reason she was not listed as his mother, but instead his father's second wife was.)

~~~~
We now stop at the grave of Garnet/Garret Sorter.
Born: August 1804
Died: September 24, 1870
He was married twice.  His first wife was Charity Smock Sorter (1788-1860).  She is buried on one side of him in Greenwood Cemetery.
They had one child that I have found:
Cynthia Ellen Sorter Brown (1834-1855) - buried in Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Hopewell, Johnson County, Indiana  (she died around the same time her second child, David, was born, though for some reason she was not listed as his mother, but instead his father's second wife was.)
His second wife was Nancy Sorter (1816-1892). She was buried on the other side of his grave in Greenwood Cemetery.
I didn't find any mention of children from his second marriage.
He was ordained as a a deacon of the church on March 4, 1829 but resigned just about a year later, likely because he was then ordained as an officer of the church.  I am not sure which Church exactly as there were several listed in the article, it just says "Officers of the Church".  He was also considered a pioneer of the county as he came to settle in 1825, likely from Kentucky.
~~~

This is the grave of Nancy Howard Springer Sorter.
Born: May 3, 1816, Butler County, Ohio
Died: April 20, 1892, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

She was the daughter of James Howard (1793-1843) and Martha Howard (?-1860).  Both are buried in Howard Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana

She was married twice, her first husband being Rice Springer (1811-1844).  He is buried in Howard Cemetery, Decatur County, Indiana.  He is listed as having died from consumption.  According to the Indiana Marriage Records, they were married on March 8, 1835.   This date is also reflected in her obituary.

It gets confusing as this is also the same marriage date for a man named Hiram Springer and Nancy Howard, but she is buried in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana - with Hiram Springer.  Both of their names are on the headstone.  The birth and death dates (1814-1886) are close, but still different.  BUT --- I also found a marriage record for Hiram and Nancy for July 12, 1835.

She had three children by her first husband:
Parthena Bryan Springer Wood (1836-1883) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Abner Springer (1837-1850) - buried in Howard Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana
Nancy "Nannie" Springer Brann/Braun (1839-1927) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Martha "Mattie" Springer Milburn (1843-1909) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

Her second husband was Garret/Garnet Sorter (1804-1870).  They were married in 1864 in Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana and he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

So, here is the big question.  Where is Nancy Howard Springer Sorter actually buried?  Is it in Greenwood Cemetery next to Garret Sorter or is she buried in South Park Cemetery in Greensburg with Hiram Springer.  And who is Hiram Springer?

~~~
Now we stop at the grave of John W. Voorhees.
Born: unknown
Died: December 24, 1864, Bardstown, Kentucky
He was a resident of Greenwood when he was recruited into Company D of the 17th Indiana Infantry on July 21, 1862.  He died at Bardstown on December 24, 1864.
I have no information on his family.
~~~~

We now stop at the grave of Bert Warren.
Born: September 8, 1879
Died: June 23, 1951

He was listed as having been a cook in the 14th Cavalry.  There was no 14th Indiana Cavalry in the Civil War and his birth date puts him post-Civil War anyway.  I don't find any information for a 14th cavalry unit for WW1 or 2.  I am not sure what his service was, though his memorial stone is reminiscent of the ones that I have seen for World War 1.

I  don't have any information for his family either.

He had several siblings:
Erastus I. Weaver (1839-1861) - buried in Old Bethel Cemetery, Switzerland County, Indiana (noted that he drowned in the Ohio River)

Daniel H. Weaver (1854-1928) - buried in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North, Frankfort, Benzie County, Michigan

He was married in 1868 to Emily Weales Weaver, whose name is listed below his on the headstone.
Born: December 28, 1848, London, England
Died: October 23, 1936, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana

She was the daughter of Henry Weales (1824-1904) and Martha Paris Weales (1827-1897).  They were married in 1847 at St. John's Church in Surrey, England and are buried in Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana.

She had many siblings:
Caroline Weales Rodgers (1847-1935) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

He served in the Civil War in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry, also known as the 45th Indiana Regiment, Company A, though I have not found his name in any of the rosters.

We now stop at the grave of Richard J. Wells.
Born: 1813, Kentucky
Died: November 4, 1887, Johnson County, Indiana

I don't have any information on his parents or any siblings.

He was married twice, his first wife being Mary Tolin Wells (?-?).  They were married on June 2, 1841 in Marion County, Indiana.  I am unsure as to where she was buried or if they had any children.

His second wife was Mary Ann Lingenfelter Flack Wells (1817-1896).  They were married on June 28, 1854 in Marion County, Indiana.  Her name is listed on the opposite side of the headstone in Greenwood Cemetery.

They had several children:
James D. Wells (1842-1918) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Nancy Ellen Wells Copeland (1846-1932) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
George Melvin Wells (1848-1921) - buried in Acacia Memorial Park, Modesto, Stanislaus County, California (mentioned in the book "Overland by Auto in 1913", the diary of a trip taken by his nephew cross-county in 1913)

Here we have the grave of Clarence Harry Wood.
Born: 1864
Died: 1927

I have no information on his family.

Our final stop is at the grave of William Andrew Wood.
Born: 1831
Died: 1893

I haven't found any information for his parents or any siblings.

He was married to Parthenea Bryan Springer Wood (1836-1883) in 1855.  Her name is listed below his on the headstone.

She was the daughter of Rice Springer (1811-1844) and Nancy Howard Springer (1814-1886).  He is buried in Howard Cemetery in Decatur County, Indiana, while she is buried in South Park Cemetery in Decatur County, Indiana.  I am unsure that she is the correct Nancy Springer.  I believe that Nancy Springer Sorter (1816-1892), buried in Greenwood Cemetery, is likely the correct one.  See her listing above for the explanation and confusion on the Springer/Sorter issue.

She had a few siblings:
Abner Springer (1837-1850) - buried in Howard Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana
Nancy "Nannie" Springer Brann/Braun (1839-1927) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
Martha "Mattie" Springer Milburn (1843-1909) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana

William and Parthenea had a few children that I have found so far:
Doctor Noah Springer Wood (1858-1924) - buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana
Mattie C. Wood Brewer (1864-1942) - buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana
John Claibourne Wood (1870-1915) - buried in Roachdale Cemetery, Roachdale, Putnam County, Indiana
Sylvia Cordelia Wood Lambert (1877-1957) - buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana

I hope you have enjoyed your walk through Greenwood Cemetery today.
