Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Breckenridge Cemetery, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana.
This cemetery is located on the side of the road on the way into Bedford from Peerless. We found it rather by accident and it became necessary to stop. It is a lovely little cemetery up on a hill with just over 400 interments, the latest within the last few years, so it is an active cemetery. This cemetery has some very interesting history in the back corner that I will not go over in this blog post in detail. It will be linked to a post on my sister blog, Our Historic Indiana.

Our first stop is at the grave of John Pace.
Born: March 21, 1855, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana
Died: May 29, 1927, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana
He was the son of William Pace (1814-1878), but the name of his mother is unknown. William is buried nearby in Breckenridge Cemetery.
He was married on September 2, 1880 to Louise Beaty Pace, who is buried with him and her name is listed below his.

Died: May 27, 1926
I don't have any information on her parents or her siblings.
She and John had a few children:

She was the wife of Clarence Simpson (?-?). I haven't yet found his burial.
They had one child:
Clifford Voyle Simpson (1912-1971) - buried in Beech Grove Cemetery, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana
The Bloomington Evening World, dated April 15, 1914 states "Postmaster J.T. Nance and family of Harrodsburg returned to their home this afternoon after having been at Bedford to attend the funeral of Mrs. Verna Simpson who died at her home on the Oolitic Road Sunday morning and whose funeral occurred from the home of her father yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. Mrs. Simpson was a niece of Mrs. Nance's."
Unfortunately there is no information on her family beyond the above.

Here is the grave of Wesley Pace.

He was the son of John Pace (1855-1927) and Louise Beaty Pace (1855-1926). They are both buried nearby in Breckenridge Cemetery.

An article from the Olney Advocate dated Friday January 25, 1907 titled "I.C. Brakeman Killed" details the death of Wesley Pace in a railroad accident. "Wesley Pace, an Illinois Central breakman on south bound local, lost his life at Calhoun Thursday last week. He was making a coupling when his left left was caught by a car wheel and he was pulled under the car...."

He was the son of Charles Beauchamp (?-?). I have no other information besides the name of his father.

Here we have the grave of John Watson.
Born: June 20, 1835
Died: November 14, 1878
He served as a Private in Company B of the 112th Indiana Infantry. The 112th Indiana Infantry was organized on July 10, 1863 to repel Morgan's Raid and was mustered out on July 17th 1863.
I don't have any information about his family, though there are several Watson's buried in Breckenridge Cemetery.

She was the wife of Dive Williams (?-1846). His name is listed above hers on the headstone.

Elias Williams (1845-1865) - buried in Alexandria National Cemetery, Alexandria, Alexandria City, Virginia (he served in the Civil War in Company C of the 28th USCI; died from inflammation of the lungs)
I did find some interesting information about Dive Williams. He came to Lawrence County, Indiana in 1817, as a slave along with a woman named Nancy and an unnamed boy who died shortly after arriving. Indiana was a free state, so they became freed slaves. At this time, the custom was for the slaves to take the name of their master. In this case, Williams as their master was Major Richard Williams and his wife, Elizabeth. Richard and Dive would travel south frequently, taking wagonloads of produce to Louisville. On one of these trips, Dive met Ruvina. On their next trip they were married. You can read more about them

He was married to Margaret Edwards Riggins (1794-1867) in 1814 in North Carolina. She is buried in Andover Cemetery, Andover, Harrison County, Missouri.

This is the grave of Sarah Jane Lemonds Kinnick.

She was the daughter John Owens Lemonds (1807-1846) and Rachel Moore Lemonds (1806-1877). He was born in North Carolina. They were married on December 16, 1824, but are buried in different cemeteries. He is said to be buried in Breckenridge Cemetery, but a headstone hasn't been found. She is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery in Lawrence County, Indiana.

There is only one other Howell buried here in Breckenridge Cemetery and that is Mauder Howell (?-1906). He is listed as being Daniel's son. I have no information on the name of Daniel's wife or any other relatives.

She was the daughter of Thomas McClelland (?-?) and Catherine McClelland (?-?). I am not sure where they are buried. I find it interesting that she is listed on the headstone with the words "Daughter of Thomas & Catherine McClelland" and her age is 35 years. These words are normally reserved for young children. Did she never marry and was living at home when she passed? It is interesting.

Born: October 16, 1747, Scotland
Died: January 16, 1827, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana
The names of his parents and siblings are unknown. He was married twice, though those dates are also unknown.
He served in the Revolutionary War with the First Battalion of Orange County, North Carolina as a Private in the Company of Captain Willliam Williams, though I have also seen it listed as Colonel Ambrose Ramsey being in charge of this particular regiment.
He was first married to Elizabeth Morris Edwards Williams (1745-1827). She is buried near him in Breckenridge Cemetery.
His second wife was Ruth Davis Edwards (1800-1864). She is buried with her second husband in Center Edwards Cemetery in Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina.
He had four sons, though whose mother was whose, I am not sure:

Vinson Williams (1787-1864) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Curryville, Sullivan County, Indiana

I did find more names of children associated with his second wife that would line up with their marriage, but in the records, they are not listed as having come to Indiana with him, so I don't know if they stayed with their mother or not. It's a little confusing.
When Richard came to Indiana in around 1816-1817, he had three slaves with him, Dive, Nancy and a little boy that died shortly after arriving. Because Indiana was a free state, they became freed citizens. Though at this time he was calling himself Major Williams.

We now come to the grave of Frances Owens.
Born: December 16, 1839, Lawrence County, Indiana
Died: October 9, 1846, Lawrence County, Indiana
She was the daughter of Owen Owens (?-?) and Frances Hunter Owens (?-?). I am not sure where they are buried.
She had at least one sibling that I have found:

As stated at the beginning of this post, there is some interesting history linked to the graveyard. In the back corner is a shaded area with a large obelisk style stone that says "In Memory of the Unknown Dead". This is referring to the 25 unknown Confederate Civil War soldiers buried here that were being held at Camp Lawrence. As noted earlier, this will be detailed better in a post on Our Historic Indiana.
