Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Simpson Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.  It is located just off of North State Road 37.

This cemetery is located around the Simpson Chapel Methodist Church and was established in 1857.   There are just over 500 interments for this cemetery.  We visited on August 23, 2015.  The oldest section of the cemetery is the part closest to the church and it radiates out from there.

Our first stop is at the grave of Corporal John Emery Bastin.

Born: December 15, 1838, Adair County, Kentucky
Died: April 24, 1892, Monroe County, Indiana

His parents were Hiram H. Bastin (1814-1872) and Mary Ann Loveall Bastin (1822-1891).  They are both buried in Simpson Chapel Methodist Cemetery.  Their last name is spelled Bastian on the headstone.

He had at least two siblings, of which he was the oldest:
Johnathon Harvey Bastin (1841-1911) - buried in Simpson Chapel Methodist Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Sarah E. Taylor (1843-1919) - buried in Mount Olive Fairview Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.

He was married to Mary Jane Holsapple Bastin (1839-1918).  She is buried in Simpson Chapel Methodist Cemetery as well.

They had at least one child:
Ulysses Grant Bastin (1868-1936) - buried in Hindustan Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

His headstone says that he served in the Civil War in the 87th Indiana Infantry, Company B, as a Corporal.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to find his name in any of the records for the 87th Indiana Infantry.  I have found reference to a John E. Bartin in the 67th Indiana Infantry.  It is possible that his name was spelled wrong in the records.  Since his brother served in the 67th Indiana Infantry it is likely that this entry would be for John Emery Bastin.  He is listed as having mustered in on August 19, 1862 and then out on July 19, 1865.

Here we have the grave of Johnathon Harvey Bastin.

Born:  January 22, 1841, Kentucky

His parents were Hiram H. Bastin (1814-1872) and Mary Ann Loveall Bastin (1822-1891).  They are both buried in Simpson Chapel Methodist Cemetery.  Their last name is spelled Bastian on the headstone.

He had at least two siblings, of which he was the oldest:
John Emery Bastin (1838-1892) - buried in Simpson Chapel Methodist Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Sarah E. Taylor (1843-1919) - buried in Mount Olive Fairview Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.

He was married to Minerva Jane Williams Bastin (?-?).  I am unsure as to where she is buried.

They had at least two children:
Sarah Elizabeth Bastin Cook (1866-1939) - buried in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
Ed Bastin (1879-1956) - buried in Scottsburg Cemetery, Scott County, Indiana.

He served in the 67th Indiana Infantry, Company B, in the Civil War.  He is listed as having mustered in on August 19, 1862 and then out on June 30, 1865.  He had the rank of Private.

Here is the grave of Hosea Gaskins.

He may be the husband of Mary A. Gaskins (?-1880) who is buried near him.  

There is a flag next to his grave, but I haven't found any notation that he was in the war.

Here we have the McNeely headstone.

On the left of the headstone is Maranda Ellett McNeely.

Died: July 5, 1901, Monroe County, Indiana

On the right is her husband, Andrew Jackson McNeely.

Born: February 2, 1820, Washington County, Indiana
Died: 1884, Monroe County, Indiana.  

His parents were Robert McNeely (1774-1858) and his mother was Susannah Evans McNeely (1778-1838).  They are both buried in Prowsville Cemetery, Washington County, Indiana.

He had several siblings of which he was the youngest:
Rebecca McNeely Phipps (1797-1868) - buried in Saltillo Cemetery, Washington County, Indiana.
Rachel McNeely Scott (1800-1887) -  buried in Hazelwood Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana.
William McNeely (1803-1874) - buried in Old Simpson Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Frances L. McNeely Stewart (1817-1892) - buried in Marengo Cemetery, Crawford County, Indiana.

I found it interesting that both of their burial sites are surrounded by roofed iron fences.  I am not sure of the significance of these structures.

Here is the grave of Charles N. Smith.

Born: 1888
Died: 1960

He was a member of the State Militia in 1906.

There is a lovely dove carved into the top of his headstone.

Here is the grave of George L. Smith.

Born: October 24, 1845
Died: December ?

The dates for his death are rubbed off and hard to read.  It almost looks like they were carved after the fact and not as deeply into the stone.  

His wife, Emily Stone (?-1879), is shown on the opposite side of the stone.

There is a flag next to his grave, but I am not sure about his service.

Our final stop today is at the grave of John A. Smith.

He was the son of William Robert "Billy" Smith (1796-?) and Sarah Bracken Smith (1797-?).  His father is buried in the Old Simpson Chapel Cemetery, but his mother's burial location is unknown.

He had several siblings:

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.

This was our second trip to Rose Hill, but the first time around we were mostly just walking to take a look at what was around.  Rose Hill was established in 1892, though the upper section of the cemetery, called the Old Spencer Addition, has many older graves in it as well as several that were moved here when the construction of Monroe Lake was began.  It is a beautiful cemetery with many graves, over 12,500 interments, and some memorials.  I definitely recommend a visit to this cemetery if only for a nice walk.

She was the wife of Lewis Bollman (1811-1888).  He is buried next to her in the Old Spencer Addition at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Here is the grave of Lewis Bollmann.

Born: May 24, 1811
Died: September 3, 1888

He was the husband of Harriet Bollmann (1815-1838).  She is buried next to him in the Old Spencer Addition at Rose Hill Cemetery.

He was the first graduate of Indiana University in 1831.

We now stop at the grave of Pleasant Browning.

He was the son of N.C. Browning (?-?) and E. Browning (?-?).  I am unsure of their names or where they are buried. 

There is a symbol carved into the top of the headstone that looks like a Freemason symbol that it is missing the center symbol.  There also is what appears to be either crossed sheaf of wheat or crossed feathers. It's hard to make out.

There is a Freemason symbol carved into the top of the headstone, but it is missing the center symbol.

Here we have the grave of Lieutenant Colonel John F. Douglass.

Born: January 9, 1835
Died:  March 26, 1910

He was married to Mary Douglass (1848-1911).  Her name is on the opposite of the headstone.

He enlisted in the Civil War as a Corporal on June 7, 1861 into 14th Indiana Infantry, Company K.  He mustered out of this regiment on June 25, 1864.  During his time in the 14th Infantry he was promoted to Second Lieutenant on January 4, 1863.  Not long after that, on March 1, 1863, he was promoted to First Lieutenant.  The following year, on March 1, he was promoted to Captain.

On February 14, 1865 he was commissioned into the 145th Indiana Infantry, Company E, as a Captain.  It was here that he resigned his commission on June 14, 1865, but not after he gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

We now stop at the grave of Sarah Alexander Dunning.

Born: June 1, 1810
Died: May 19, 1863

She was the wife of Paris Chipman Dunning (1806-1884).  He is buried near her in the Old Spencer Addition in Rose Hill Cemetery.  

Her husband was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1833-1836.  He was also a member of the State Senate from 1836-1839 and also from 1863-1865.  In 1844, he served as Presidential Elector from Indiana.  From 1846-1848 and again from 1863-1865, he was Lieutenant Governor of Indiana.  He was elected Governor of Indiana from December 26-1848 to December 5, 1849.  She was listed as being the First Lady of Indiana from 1848-1849.

Here we have the Grinstead Vault.

There is a small bronze plaque on the left side of the vault with the name Cassie J. Shaw Grinstead.

Died: September 19, 1932, Elida, Roosevelt County, New Mexico

She was the daughter of Philip Buckner Shaw (?-?) and Amy M. Weatherby Shaw (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they are buried.

She had nine siblings, but I only have reference to two:
Francisca Shaw (?-?) - unknown
Marshal Martin Shaw (?-?) - unknown

She was the wife of Silas Miles Grinstead (1857-1939).  They were married on August 30, 1876.  I believe that he is buried in the vault as well.  Even though his name is not on the outside, his name is listed as being in the same location.

Silas was the son of Benjamin Franklin Grinstead (?-?) and Melissa Grinstead (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they are buried.

They had nine children, though I have only found reference to three:
Olive Grinstead (?-?) - unknown
Laura M. Bell Grinstead (?-?) - unknown
Claude Everett Grinstead (1880-1915) - buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Labette County, Kansas.
Amy Alberta Grinstead Hall (1882-1961) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana (I believe that she may also be buried in the Grinstead Vault.  She was married to Forrest M. Hall (?-?) and had one child, Virginia Jane Hall (?-?).)
Silas Carl Grinstead (?-?) - unknown
Jewel A. Grinstead (?-?) - unknown
Averell Grinstead (?-?) - unknown
Marie Grinstead (?-?) - unknown
Montana L. Grinstead (1895-1965) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana (She is also buried in the Grinstead Vault.  There is a small name head stone near the vault with her name and birth and death dates on it.)

I am unsure if the middle initial is U. or H.  The headstone is hard to read.  He is buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery near many other members of the Orchard Family, though I am unsure of the connection between them.

His grave is partially buried in the ground and was hard to read.  It is made of a yellowed whetstone but has survived the elements quite well.

His whetstone grave marker can be found in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery.  I believe that he may have been the husband of Mary Paugh (1797-1830) as they are buried next to one another in the Old Spencer Addition.

Hiram P. Pauley (1816-1877) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
James B. Pauley (1822-1899) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Phreborn Garrison Pauley (1826-1902) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

She was the wife of Isaac Pauley (1789-1833).  He is buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery near her.

Together they had at least three children:
Hiram P. Pauley (1816-1877) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
James B. Pauley (1822-1899) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

Here is the grave of Mary J. Reed.

Born: June 16, 1855
Died: April 28, 1888

She was the wife of Cyrus F. Reed (1851-1930).  He is buried near her in the Old Spencer Addition at Rose Hill Cemetery. 

They had at least one child:
Infant Reed (?-?) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

The carving on this headstone is very unique with the number of nature like ideals.  There are several leaves, fern fronds, a calla lily and such all integrated into one headstone. It is very lovely.

Here we have the grave of George "Anner" Shively.

Born: January 3, 1893, Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky
Died: June 7, 1962, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.

He was married to Lula Shively (1890-1957).  She is buried near him in Rose Hill Cemetery.

George Shively was a Negro League Baseball Player for fourteen years, from 1910-1924.  He was the left handed leadoff man for the West Baden Sprudels, The Indianapolis ABC's, the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and the Washington Potomics. He was so fast that he earned the nickname "Rabbit".   He played in not only the US and Hawaii but in Cuba and Japan.  He was employed as a roofer.  He was inducted into the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

This monument and many of the flat headstones surrounding it were erected within the last year or so after his grave and that of some of his relatives were finally located.

Here is the grave of Mary Slocomb.

Born: unknown
Died: 1831

She was the first wife of James Slocomb (?-1861).  He is buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery.

They had at least one child:
Sarah Hooper Slocomb Plaiss (1824-1899) - buried in Fairview Cemetery, Floyd County, Indiana.

Here is the grave of Joseph Small.

Born: December 1781, Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland
Died: 1857

He was the husband of Jane Small (1780-1848).  She is buried near him in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery.

Here we have the grave of H.C. Webster.

Born: June 27, 1839
Died: May 14, 1889

I believe that he may have been a member of the International Order of the OddFellows as evidenced by the three chain links at the head of his grave.

He is buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery.

We now stop at the grave of Andrew Wylie.

Born: April 12, 1789
Died: November 11, 1851

He was married to Margaret Ritchie Wylie (1791-1859).  Her name is carved into one of the sides of the monument.  Unfortunately, the photo I took of her side was deleted by mistake, but I will go ahead and list her relations.

She was the daughter of Craig Ritchie (1758-1833) and Mary Jane Price Ritchie (1769-1836).  They are both buried in Chartiers Hill Cemetery in Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania.  

She had at least four siblings of which she was the oldest:
Mary Ritchie Herriott (1800-1828) - buried in Chartiers Hill Cemetery, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
Eliza Ritchie McKee (1802-1871) - buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington DC.
Catherine B. Ritchie Leake (1804-1859) - buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Vigo County, Indiana.
Craig Ritchie (1807-1879) - buried in Oak Spring Cemetery, Washington County, Pennsylvania (he was an accomplished glass cutter and several of his pieces can be seen in the Pennsylvania Museum in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia.)

They had at least five children:
William Wylie (1816-1835) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Mary Ann Wylie Dodds (1817-1886) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Elizabeth Wylie McCalla (1821-1900) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Redick McKee Wylie (1831-1904) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Jane Melheme Wylie (1836-1865) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

Andrew Wylie was the first president of Indiana University from 1829-1851.  He was a reverend as well as the former president of Jefferson College and of Washington College.  He taught philosophy and literature as well.  He owned the Wylie House which is located on Second and Lincoln Streets in Bloomington, Indiana.  We took a tour of the Wylie House in June of 2015.  It is a lovely Federal style home with many pictures of the family and lots of furniture.  It is open to the public for tours and special events.  Please visit the website for more information.


Andrew is a charter member of the Monroe County Hall of Fame.  His plaque is located inside the main lobby of Fountain Square Mall in downtown Bloomington.  We stopped by on September 7, 2015 and snapped a photo of the plaque.

Our final stop is at the grave of William Wylie.

Born: January 1, 1816
Died: March 18, 1835

He was the son of Andrew Wylie (1789-1851) and Margaret Ritchie Wylie (1791-1859).  They are both buried in the Old Spencer Addition of Rose Hill Cemetery.

He had at least four siblings of which he was the eldest:
Mary Ann Wylie Dodds (1817-1886) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Elizabeth Wylie McCalla (1821-1900) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Redick McKee Wylie (1831-1904) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Jane Melheme Wylie (1836-1865) - buried in the Old Spencer Addition, Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
