Becks Grove Cemetery

Hello!  After a long, unplanned hiatus, we are back at our cemetery visits!  So without further ado, today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Becks Grove Cemetery in Becks Grove, Brown County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.0789, -86.1114

This charming little rural cemetery is located off of South Garrity Road in Brown County, Indiana and is listed as having just over 200 interments.  There are a few newer burials here, but for the most part the burials date to the 19th century and the first half of the 20th.  The cemetery itself is in decent condition and appears to be taken care of, but is probably not in use these days.  There is a small gravel pull-off just big enough for one car.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop today is at the grave of Inez Allen.
Born: October 24, 1893
Died: July 24, 1894
She was the infant daughter of William David Allen (1860-1936) and Sarah Emma Carmichael Allen (1863-1934).  They are both buried nearby in Becks Grove Cemetery.
She had at least two other siblings:
Nancy Etta Allen (1888-1969) - her body was donated to medical science.
William Marion Allen (1890-1961) - buried in Houston Cemetery, Jackson County, Indiana
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next we have the grave of Austin Barker.

Born: August 25, 1891
Died: December 15, 1896

He was the son of James A. Barker (1861-1942) and Martha A. Rudolph Barker (1863-1913).  Both are buried nearby in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.

He had one other known sibling:
Dolle May Barker (1883-1973) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here we have the grave of James A. Barker and his wife Martha A. Rudolph Barker.
We will start with Martha.
Born: March 19, 1863
Died: March 3, 1913
She was the daughter of John Rudolph (?-?) and Mary A. Bridgewater Rudolph (?-?).  I am unsure of where they are buried or whether or not she had any siblings.
She and James both have simple field stone with their initials carved into them. I am unsure as to whether they were the original stones or just additions to the more modern headstone.
Next we move on to James.
Born: 1861
Died: 1942
He was the son of Jesse Barker (1831-1906) and Mary Malissa Cooper Barker (1833-1910).  He was born in Ohio, while she was born in West Virginia.  I am unsure as to where they are buried, but they both passed on while living in Indiana.
He had several siblings:
Next we have a headstone for the Bahan Family.
There are three names listed on this stone. We will start at the top and work our way down.
First is William P. Bahan.
Born: 1855
Died: 1913
I have no information for his parents or any siblings.
Next is his wife, Sarah Catharine Thompson Bahan.
Born: 1860
Died: December 3, 1927
She was the daughter of James A. Thompson (1831-1906) and Elizabeth J. Hill Thompson (1832-1909).  They are both buried in Becks Grove Cemetery.
She had several siblings:
Mary Ann Thompson Cain (1852-1928) - buried in Saint Pauls Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Eliza Jane Thompson Holmes (1855-1898) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
William G. Thompson (1858-1943) - burial unknown
Lewis F. Thompson (1863-?) - burial unknown
She was married once before her marriage to William.  Her first husband was Charles W. Spurgeon (1861-1939).  He is buried in Becks Grove Cemetery as well.
They had several children, one of which is listed last on the headstone:
Lillie Bahan Carmichael (1889-1987) - Campground United Methodist Church, Cumberland County, North Carolina
Clifford E. Bahan (1900-1925) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana (his name is listed last on the headstone)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Barbara Berry McCord.

Born: July 25, 1812 Kentucky
Died: February 13, 1909 Indiana

She was the daughter of Richard Berry (?-?) and Barbara Presswood Berry (?-?).  I am unsure where they are buried.

She was the wife of John Milton McCord (1810-?).  I am unsure as to where he is buried, but I do know that he was born in Kentucky.

They had five known children:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next is the grave of Elizabeth E. Spaid Henry Branaman.
Born: September 14, 1807 Ohio
Died: August 29, 1888
I have no information on her parents or any siblings.
She was married twice.  Her first husband was James Henry (?-?).  His burial is unknown, but I do know that he and Elizabeth were married in Knox, Ohio on June 4, 1836.
She had three children with James:
Murry Henry (1837-1907) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Westin Willibee Henry (1840-1913) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Elizabeth E. Henry (1843-?) - burial unknown
BUT ---
Here is where the family story gets a little strange and I have had a hard time sorting it all out.  At some point, something happened to James.  Either they were divorced or he passed away.  I am unsure of which it was as I haven't been able to find anything out just yet.  But she remarried to Peter Branaman (1801-1865), who already had children of his own.  Three in fact.  Two girls and a boy, as listed below.  He is buried near her in Becks Grove Cemetery.  Unfortunately, I have yet to find out who his first wife, the mother of those listed below, was:
Caroline D.A. Branaman Henry (1837-1899) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.
Sophia Branaman Henry (1840-1879)  - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Levi Branaman (1840-1894) - buried in Buffalo Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Elizabeth's sons, Murry and Westin, ended up marrying Caroline and Sophia, respectively.  I am not sure if this was before or after she married Peter.  Levi also married a young woman with the last name of Henry, Elizabeth Henry (1843-1875).  I am not sure of her family history as of yet, but I do know that she was his first wife.  His second wife was a woman named Catherine Eddy (1854-1905).
If anyone has any information and can clear some of this up, please let me know.  Thanks!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Frank Brand.

Born: July 7, 1875
Died: August 20, 1893

He was the son of Peter Brand (1843-1913) and Lucretia Jane Moore Brand (1841-1925).  They are both buried nearby in Becks Grove Cemetery.

He had several siblings:
Infant Daughter Brand (?-1884) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana  (her name may have been Addie)
Jonas R. Brand (1862-1954) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Nancy Jane Brand Henry (1868-1917) - buried in Saint Pauls Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Malisa Alice "Nettie" Brand Shultz (1871-1958) - buried in Phillips Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Henry Johnson Brand (1873-1953) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
John Garfield Brand (1877-1948) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now we stop at the grave of Mary Susie Matlock Brand.
Born: 1873
Died: 1904
I am not sure who her parents were or where they are buried, nor anything about her siblings, if she had any.
She was the wife of Jonas R. Brand (1862-1954).  He is buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
They had three children together, that I have found so far:
Homer H. Brand (1894-1985) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Wesley Brand (1897-1959) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Blanche Brand Hughes (1902-1976) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is the grave of Peter and Lucretia Brand.

We will start with Peter as he is listed first.
Born: April 11, 1843
Died: January 16, 1913

He was the son of Johnson Brand (?-?) and Margaret A. Ball Brand (?-?).  I am unsure as to where they are buried.

He had at least two siblings that I am aware of:
Issac Brand (1833-1905) - buried in Melott Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Mary Elizabeth Brand Truex (1846-1910) - buried in Grandview Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana

Next is his wife, Lucretia Jane Moore Brand
Born: October 5, 1841, Monroe County, Ohio
Died: August 25, 1925, Brown County, Indiana

She was the daughter of Henry Moore (1807-1891) and Rachel M. Skinner Moore (1806-1875).  They are both buried in New Bellsville Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.

She had many siblings:
Andrew Jackson Moore (1827-1905) - buried in Whigville Cemetery, Noble County, Ohio
Michael J. Moore (1829-1896) - buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Nathaniel Moore (1832-1891) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Hannah Moore Hedge (1834-1925) - buried in Mount Ephraim Cemetery, Noble County, Ohio
Lemuel S. Moore (1836-1912) - buried in Devol Cemetery, Noble County, Ohio
William O. Moore (1838-1923) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
James Marion Moore (1844-1824) - buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Nancy Moore (1847-1848) - buried in Whigville Cemetry, Noble County, Ohio

There may be an error on the headstone with her birthdate.  It is possible that she was actually born later in 1841-1842.  I don't have anything official yet, but this is a note on her listing at Find-A-Grave.

Lucretia and Peter were married in Noble County, Ohio on December 2, 1865 and had several children together:
Infant Daughter Brand (?-1884) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana  (her name may have been Addie)
Jonas R. Brand (1862-1954) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Nancy Jane Brand Henry (1868-1917) - buried in Saint Pauls Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Malisa Alice "Nettie" Brand Shultz (1871-1958) - buried in Phillips Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Henry Johnson Brand (1873-1953) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Frank Brand (1875-1893) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
John Garfield Brand (1877-1948) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana

The day that I took the picture, there was a fairly new flag placed in front of the grave.  I haven't yet found anything that stated that Peter served but if he did, it was probably in the Civil War.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
We now come to the grave of Thomas M. Brock.
Born: June 15, 1834
Died: October 14, 1900
I don't have any information on his parents or any siblings at the moment.
He was married to Barbary A. Brock (1840-1912).  Her name appears to be listed on the opposite side of the headstone, though I didn't get a picture of it the day that we were there.
They had one child that I have found reference to:
Johnson Brock (1860-1940) - buried in Freetown Cemetery, Jackson County, Indiana
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave for John and Rachel Brock.

We will start with John, who is listed on the left side.
Born: March 14, 1806
Died: August 28, 1888

He married Rebecca Stuckey Brock (1809-1852) on January 6, 1831.  She is buried in Captina Cemetery in Monroe County, Ohio.  According to notes on her grave, John moved to Indiana and left her behind in Ohio.  I am unsure as to why he moved to Indiana or why she did not go with him.

They had at least two children:
Joseph R. Brock (1836-1913) - buried in Beallsville Cemetery, Monroe County, Ohio (he was a Civil War Veteran in Company A, 11E Reg, Ohio Volunteer Infantry)
Levi Gregg Brock (1845-1918) - buried in Mount Rose Cemetery, Marshall County, West Virginia (he was a Civil War Soldier in the Union Army)
Sarah M. Brock (?-1845) - buried in Captina Cemetery, Monroe County, Ohio (she is listed as a half-sister to the two above, though they all have the same parents listed)

But it would appear that when he got to Indiana, he married again.  This time to Rachel Brock, who is listed on the right side of the headstone.

Born: May 15, 1829
Died: February 22, 1905

I don't see any listings for children anywhere, so I am unsure if they had any.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We now stop at the headstone of Abel Brown.
Born: November 9, 1810, Monroe County, Ohio (probably)
Died: February 23, 1900
He was married to Rosanna Barkheimer Brown (1813-1899).  She is buried with him in Becks Grove Cemetery.  Her name is shown on the other side of the stone.
They had several children together, twelve that I have found mention of, though I don't have that many names:
Samuel A. Brown (1832-1904) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana (his headstone has not been located but his death certificate states that he was buried here.  Family stories state that he built his own coffin.)
Phillip Brown (1834-1915) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Margaret Ann Brown Waggoner (1836-1916) - buried in Bellflower Township Cemetery, McLean County, Illinois
Matilda J. Wheeler (1840-1922) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Henry H. Brown (1851-1921) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Willis Brown (1854-1930) - buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave of Rosanna Barkheimer Brown.

Born: December 16, 1813, Pennsylvania
Died: March 18, 1899

She was the daughter of Samuel Barkheimer (1790-1868) and Margaret Barkheimer (1786-1855).  They are both buried in the family graveyard, Barkheimer Cemetery, in Jackson County, Indiana.  Some family researchers state that Margaret's maiden name is "Favour" there there is nothing definite.

She had seven siblings, maybe more, though I only have the name of one:
Sarah Berkheimer Bowman (1818-1895) - buried in Taylors Chapel Cemetery, Jackson County, Indiana (note the change in spelling)

She was married to Abel Brown (1810-1900).  They share a headstone in Becks Grave Cemetery.

They had several children together, twelve that I have found mention of, though I don't have that many names:
Samuel A. Brown (1832-1904) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana (his headstone has not been located but his death certificate states that he was buried here.  Family stories state that he built his own coffin.)
Phillip Brown (1834-1915) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana

Harris Long Carmichael (1864-1951) - burial unknown
Iven V. Carmichael (1866-?) - burial unknown
John C. Carmichael (1871-1958) - buried in Houston Cemetery, Jackson County, Indiana.

He was married three times, though I only have listings for one of his wives.  His first wife was Frances Elizabeth Pruitt Phillips (?-1883).  They were married in Brown County, Indiana on December 24, 1875.

I believe that they had at least two children:
John Carmichael (1880-1972) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Emma Louvena Lowe (1881-1865) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

His second wife was Euretta J. Rudolph Carmichael (1864-1903).  They were married on December 1, 1877 in Brown County, Indiana.  She is buried in Phillips Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.

I have found reference to one child from this marriage:
Carmel Carmichael (1889-1978) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana

His last wife was Mary Frances Hurley Truex Carmichael (?-?).  They were married February 28, 1908 in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

I am unsure as to whether or not they had any children.

On the side of her headstone is carved the name Maudie Cummings.

I am unsure if there were any other children born to them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the grave of David W. Glasgow.
Born: 1880
Died: 1884
There is no information for this grave at all.  It was a strange site in the cemetery as it has a basic metal placard to show the name and dates.  There are no other graves like it in Becks Grove Cemetery, nor are there any other Glasgow's buried here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave of the Infant Hamilton.

Born: unknown

This was the infant child of Morton Hamilton (1845-1907) and Nancy F. Pruitt Hamilton (1848-1910).  They are buried in Phillips Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana.

Died: May 12, 1894

He was the son of William Peter Hendershot (1849-1927) and Margaret Elizabeth Moore Hendershot (1854-1898).  They are both buried nearby in Becks Grove Cemetery and have a similarly carved headstone.

Died: July 1879

She was the infant daughter of Westin Willibee Henry (1840-1913) and Sophia Branaman Henry (1840-1879).  Their names are listed next to hers on the headstone.  You many remember the name of Westin Willibee Henry from early in this journey.  He was the son of Elizabeth E. Spaid Henry Branaman(1807-1888) and James Henry (?-?) and had the most confusing family listing.

Next is Sophia Branaman Henry.

Born: 1840, Pennsylvania
Died: June 20, 1879, Brown County, Indiana

She was the daughter of Peter Branaman (1801-1865), but her mother's name is unknown, regardless of the fact that many family histories have her mother listed as being Elizabeth E. Spaid Henry Branaman (1807-1888).  I believe that it is more appropriate to say that Elizabeth is Sophia's step-mother.  He is buried in Buffalo Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana, while Elizabeth is buried here in Becks Grove Cemetery.

Next we have Westin Willibee Henry.

Born: February 18, 1840, Ohio
Died: September 24, 1913, Brown County, Indiana

He was the son of James Henry (?-?) and Elizabeth E. Spaid Henry Branaman (1807-1888). I am unsure as to where he was buried, but she was buried in Becks Grove Cemetery.

They had many children:
Cemantha Angeline Henry Tovey (1862-1950) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Alsurah Henry (1864-1868) - buried in Buffalo Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Malissa J. Henry Waggoner (1866-1953) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana
Clarence Independence Henry (1867-1933) - buried in Saint Pauls Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Mary Eveline Henry Campbell (1870-1893) - buried in Becks Grove Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana

We now stop at the grave of Hezekiah Strutton.

Born: April 20, 1810
Died: October 20, 1893

He was the son of Absalom Strutton (1774-1852) and an unknown woman.  Absalom married again, to Darcus Shearman Strutton on October 25, 1806, with which he had three more children.  He is listed as having a non-cemetery burial.  Legend says that Absalom was visiting his son John who lived in Stratton Meadow just across the Tennessee border.  It was here that he fell ill and his family knew that he would die.  His son, John, cut down a tree and from it they formed a coffin.  Absalom said that he liked Tennessee and North Carolina and wanted to be buried in both.  They buried him across the state line, head in North Carolina and feet in Tennessee.  There is a large memorial stone and a small, field stone under the Cherohala Skyway where he is buried.

Hezekiah has five brothers and sisters:
John Strutton (1799-1862) - buried in Ballplay Ebenezer Cemetery, Monroe County, Tennessee (he participated in the Cherokee removal of 1839)

This is the grave for Josie O. Tovey.

Born: 1889, Becks Grove, Brown County, Indiana
Died: 1889, Becks Grove, Brown County, Indiana

I am unsure of any family connections for this newborn.  I do know that there is another Tovey child buried nearby with a similar headstone, that of Earl Tovey (1890-1893).  Very possible a sibling.   There is also the grave for Cemantha Angeline Henry Tovey (1862-1950) and her husband William John Tovey (1858-1933) in this same cemetery.  I believe that it is safe to say that these are her parents and those of Earl, but without definite proof, I don't want to link anyone to them.  I will just leave their names here in case I find anything in the future.
