Flatrock Baptist Cemetery

Good Morning, all!  Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Flatrock Baptist Cemetery in Clifford, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.2813988, -85.9044037

This small cemetery is located in the tiny, non-descript town of Clifford, Indiana in Bartholomew County.  We discovered it while driving out to the lavender festival, which unfortunately was highly disappointing.  But at least we found a cemetery.

This is an active cemetery with a little under 1,300 interments.  It is also called the Owens Cemetery, though I don't remember finding many graves with the name Owens in the older section of the cemetery.    It was super hot (mid-90s) when we stopped, so we tour a rather quick run through the older section of the cemetery and discovered some amazingly well-kept graves with lots of footstones and numerous War of 1812 veterans.

~~~~~~~
Our first stop in our tour of this cemetery is at the grave of Richard Ferry.
Born: September 30, 1865
Died: November 19, 1865
He was the infant son of Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) and his second wife, Mary Tilden Ferry (1839-1881).   They were married in 1865 and are both buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
Had he survived, he would have had several siblings:
Hardin C. Ferry (1854-1916) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Catharine A. Ferry (1856-1858) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Sarah Isabelle Ferry Miller (1861-1913) - buried in Moravian Cemetery, Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Adaliza Ferry (1868-1873) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana (she shares a headstone with William)
William B. C. Ferry (1870-1873) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana (he shares a headstone with Adaliza)
Horace Greely Ferry (1874-1874) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
She was the young daughter of Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) and his second wife, Mary Tilden Ferry (1839-1881).   They were married in 1865 and are both buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
She had several siblings:
Hardin C. Ferry (1854-1916) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Died: April 22, 1873
He was the young son of Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) and his second wife, Mary Tilden Ferry (1839-1881).   They were married in 1865 and are both buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
He had several siblings:
We now come to the grave of Catharine A. Ferry.
Born: March 3, 1856, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Died: June 5, 1858, Bartholomew County, Indiana
She was the daughter of Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) and Adleiza Iliff Ferry (1833-1864), his first wife.   They were married in 1852 and are both buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Church Cemetery.
Horace Greely Ferry (1874-1874) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Robert Franklin Ferry, Sr.
Born: April 26, 1827, Dearborn County, Indiana
Died: December 25, 1918, Bartholomew County, Indiana

He was the son of Harden C. Ferry (1797-1849) and Hannah Guard Ferry (1806-1830).  He is buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, but I am unsure where his mother is buried.

I believe that he had at least one sibling:
Hannah Ann Ferry Bozell (1829-1855) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

He was married twice.  His first wife was Adleiza Iliff Ferry (1833-1864).  They were married in 1852.  Her name is listed on one side of the monument at Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

They had three children:

Hardin C. Ferry (1854-1916) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Catharine A. Ferry (1856-1858) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Sarah Isabelle Ferry Miller (1861-1913) - buried in Moravian Cemetery, Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana

His second wife was Mary Tilden Ferry (1839-1881).  They were married in 1865.  Her name is lisetd on another side of the monument.

They had four children:
Richard Ferry (1865-1865) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana (she shares a headstone with him)

He was listed as having been postmaster of the Saint Louis Crossing Post Office.  His compensation was $165.29.

According to his obituary, published in the Columbus Republican on December 25, 1918, he died tragically in an accident when his clothes caught while lighting a fire in the early morning.  By the time the physician arrived, the man was charred and burnt and was not expected to live.  You can read the full obituary here

~~~~~~~~
Here is the grave of Mary Tilden Ferry.
Born: 1839, Pennsylvania
Died: February 16, 1881
She was the second wife of Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918).  She shares a headstone with him in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
They had four children, none of which lived into adulthood:
Richard Ferry (1865-1865) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana (she shares a headstone with him)
Adaliza Ferry (1868-1873) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana (she shares a headstone with William)
William B. C. Ferry (1870-1873) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Horace Greely Ferry (1874-1874) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
~~~~~~~

We now stop at the grave of Adleiza Iliff Ferry.
Born: January 5, 1833, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio
Died: March 14, 1864, Bartholomew County, Indiana

She was the daughter of Catherine Guard (1799-1877).  She is buried in Greendale Cemetery, Greendale, Dearborn County, Indiana with her third husband, though I don't believe that he is Adleiza's father.

She was the first wife of Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918).  She shares a headstone with him in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

They had three children:

Hardin C. Ferry (1854-1916) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Catharine A. Ferry (1856-1858) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Sarah Isabelle Ferry Miller (1861-1913) - buried in Moravian Cemetery, Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana

~~~~~
Here we have the grave of Harden C. Ferry.
Born: November 1797
Died: April 30, 1849
He was married to Hannah Guard Ferry (1806-1830), but I am unsure as to where she is buried.
They had at least one child:
Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
I believe that Hannah Ann Ferry Bozell (1829-1855) and Cynthia Ferry Kyle (1825-1857)  are also their children as the time frame fits and they are buried with them in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Hannah Ann Ferry Bozell.
Born: March 1829
Died: May 22, 1855

I am unsure as to who her parents were, but she may have been the daughter of Harden C. Ferry (1797-1849) and Hannah Guard Ferry (1806-1830).  Time frame fits and she is buried in line with the rest of the Ferry family in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

If she is indeed their daughter that would make it so that she had at least two other siblings:
Cynthia Ferry Kyle (1825-1857) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

She was the wife of Joseph Bozell (?-?).  I am unsure as to where he is buried, but I believe that his is buried in Eastern Cemetery, Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana with several children from a second marriage, though I don't see any mention of his second wife.

~~~~~~~~~
We now come to the grave of Cynthia Ferry Kyle.
Born: March 1825
Died: December 14, 1857
She is buried in the same line as the rest of the Ferry family, so I believe that she was another child of Harden C. Ferry (1797-1849) and Hannah Guard Ferry (1806-1830), who are buried near her in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
If so that would mean that she has at least two siblings:
Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Hannah Ann Ferry Bozell (1829-1855) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
She was the wife of Hemin G. Kyle, Sr. (?-?).  I can find no information on him or whether or not they had any children.
~~~~~~~~

This is the grave of Sallie M. Kyle.
Born: October 1849
Died: December 15, 1879

I am unsure as to who here parents were or whether or not she had any siblings.

She was the wife of John H. Kyle (?-?), but I haven't found any information about him yet.

~~~~~~
We now stop at the grave of Cynthia Ferry.
Born: November 1793
Died: December 11, 1847
I don't have any information on her parents or any siblings.
She was married to Charles Ferry (?-?), but I am not sure where he is buried.  I am not sure of his connection to the Ferry family.  He may have been Harden's brother.
I don't have have any names of children either.
~~~~~~~~~

Here is the grave of Horace Greely Ferry.
Born: February 19, 1874
Died: October 22, 1874

He was the infant son of Robert Franklin Ferry (1827-1918) and his second wife, Mary Tilden Ferry (1839-1881).   They were married in 1865 and are both buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

He would have had several siblings:
Hardin C. Ferry (1854-1916) - buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Catharine A. Ferry (1856-1858) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Sarah Isabelle Ferry Miller (1861-1913) - buried in Moravian Cemetery, Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Richard Ferry (1865-1865) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Adaliza Ferry (1868-1873) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana (she shares a headstone with William)
William B. C. Ferry (1870-1873) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana (he shares a headstone with Adaliza)

~~~~~~~~
We now stop at the Owens grave.
First is John Quincy Adams Owens.
Born: November 25, 1845
He was the son of Nathaniel Owens (1800-1885) and his third wife, Sarah E. Wishard Owens (1817-1905).  They were married in 1844 and are both buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
Lavina Jane Owens Baker (1858-1900) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
He was married twice.  His first wife was America Becker Owens (1846-1884).  They were married on December 12/29, 1867 in Bartholomew County, Indiana.  She is buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
They had at least four children:
His second wife was Frances J. Brant Thurston (?-?).  They were married on September 17, 1885 in Bartholomew County, Indiana, though I am unsure as to where she is buried.
His third wife was Melissa/Malissa Elizabeth Louden Owens (1858-1913).  They were married on November 17, 1889 in Bartholomew County, Indiana and her name is listed below his on the headstone.
She was the daughter of William Louden (1814-1891) and Mary Ann Hopkins Louden (1834-1910).  They are buried in Saint Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery in Taylorsville, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
She had at least two siblings:
Martha M. Louden (1870-1870) - buried in Saint Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery, Taylorsville, Bartholomew County, Indiana
I believe that John and Melissa only had one child:
Sadie Owens Keekar (1890-1927) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
John was a Private during the Civil War.  He enlisted on December 2, 1863 in Bartholomew County, Indiana and mustered out in Louisville, Kentucky on July 21, 1865.  He served in the 33rd Indiana Infantry, Company I.
I have also found information stating that he enlisted with the same company and regiment, but on September 16, 1861. I cannot, however, corroborate that with the information in the roster.
Here we have the memorial stone for William Bolton.
We now come to the grave of Ruhama Susan Price Bass.
Born: September 20, 1777, Monmouth County, New Jersey
Died: October 21, 1853, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
She was the daughter of Stephen Price (?-?) and Hannah Chandler Price (?-?).  I haven't been able to determine where they were buried or whether or not they had any other children.
She was the wife of Nathan Woodford Bass (1775-1849).  They were married in 1796 and he is buried in Salem Predestinarian Baptist Church Cemetery in Boone County, Kentucky.  I had to stop for a moment and look up what Presdestinarianism is because I had never heard of it.  According to Vocabulary.com " n. the belief or doctrince of predestinarians [n. anyone who submits to the belief that they are powerless to change their destiny; adj. of or relating to predestination; holding the doctrine of predestination]; [n. (theology) being determined in advance; especially the doctrine (usually associated with Calvin) that God has foreordained every event throughout eternity (including the final salvation of mankind)".
They had several children:
He was the infant son of Stephen Owens (1828-1906) and Mary Ann Hill Owens (1838-1901).  They are both buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, though her grave is unmarked.
Interesting bit of information about his mother, Mary Ann.  Mary Ann's parents were Alpha Hill and Sarah Wishard Hill.  Stephen, her husband, was the son of Nathaniel Owens who Sarah Wishard Hill later married.  So, that makes Stephen Owens Mary Ann's step brother.
He had at least two siblings:
At the base of the stone are the names Mary Jane Houser (1827-1857) and Martha Ann Jones Houser (1829-1847).  Both of them have a headstone nearby.  Mary's name is on one side and Martha is on the other.  I mistakenly only took a photo of Mary's side of the stone so I will list Martha here.
She was born on March 4, 1829 in Bartholomew County, Indiana and died December 10, 1847 in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
She was the daughter of Judge William S. Jones (1790-1878) and Sallie Nelson Jones (1800-1875).  Both names are listed on the monument, her mother's being just above.
She was married on December 21, 1845 to Joshua Sims Houser (1822-1899).  She was sixteen years old when they were married and she died only a couple of years later.  He married her younger sister a couple of years after that.  He is buried in Knox City Cemetery, Knox County, Missouri.
~~~~~~~~

We now come to the grave of Samuel Nelson.
Born: July 26, 1769, Bucks County, Pennsylvania
Died: March 2, 1844

He is buried in the same plot as the Jones family, near his daughter Sallie.

I have no information on his parents or any siblings.

He was married to Nancy Allen Nelson (1771-1849).  She is buried near him in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

They had the following children:
Sallie Nelson Jones (1800-1875) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Jemima Nelson Van Meter (1802-1835) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

We now come to the grave of Nancy Allen Nelson.
Born: March 4, 1771, Culpepper County, Virginia
Died: April 12, 1849, Bartholomew County, Indiana

She is buried in the same plot as the Jones family, near her daughter Sallie.

I have no information on who her parents were or any siblings.

She was married to Samuel Nelson (1769-1844) and is near him in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

They had the following children:
Sallie Nelson Jones (1800-1875) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

B.L. Nelson (1818-1839) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

~~~~~~
We now step back to the back part of the Jones Family Plot to the graves of the VanMeters.  Our first stop is at the grave of Jemima Nelson VanMeter.
Born: 1802, Kentucky
Died: August 23, 1835
She was the daughter of Samuel Nelson (1769-1844) and Nancy Allen Nelson (1771-1849).  They are buried in the same plot in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
She had several siblings:
Sallie Nelson Jones (1800-1875) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Milton John Nelson (1806-1889) - buried in Mount Auburn, Shelby County, Indiana
Abigail Nelson Troutman (1808-1876) - buried in New Hope Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiaan
Ephraim M. Nelson (1809-1897) - buried in Lester Cemetery, Drakesville, Davis County, Iowa
Lloyd Allen Nelson (1812-1900) - buried in Riverside Cemetery, Denver, Denver County, Colorado
B.L. Nelson (1818-1839) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
I haven't been able to find out anything to explain as to why she has two headstones side by side.
She was married to Joseph Harrison VanMeter (1792-1887).  He is buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
They had one child who appears to have died just after birth:
Infant Daughter VanMeter (?-?) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave for the Infant Daughter VanMeter.
Born: unknown
Died: unknown

She was the newborn daughter of Joseph Harrison VanMeter (1792-1887) and Jemima Nelson VanMeter (1802-1835).  He is buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa and she is buried near her infant in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

Had she survived, she would have had several siblings:
Gardom G. Vanmeter (?-1823) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana  (he appears to have two conflicting stones in the same cemetery)
Jacob Rhodes VanMeter (1824-1910) - buried in Otterman Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Susan Grundy Van Meter Haycraft (1826-1886) - buried in Elizabethtown City Cemetery, Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky
Julius Jackson VanMeter (1829-1894) - buriedin Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Hugo Grotius VanMeter (1831-1885) - buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Joseph Vanmeter (1843-1844) - buried in Treadway Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana

~~~~~~~~
We now come to the grave of Elizabeth Burkham Grundy Van Meter.
Born: July 3, 1800, Bullitt County, Kentucky
Died: February 23, 1832, Bartholomew County, Indiana
I am unsure as to who her parents were or the names of any of her siblings.
She was the first wife of Joseph Harrison VanMeter (1792-1887).  They were married on June 29, 1820 in Bullitt County, Kentucky.  He is buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
They had five children:
Gardom G. Vanmeter (?-1823) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana  (he appears to have two conflicting stones in the same cemetery)
Jacob Rhodes VanMeter (1824-1910) - buried in Otterman Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Susan Grundy Van Meter Haycraft (1826-1886) - buried in Elizabethtown City Cemetery, Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky
Julius Jackson VanMeter (1829-1894) - buriedin Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Hugo Grotius VanMeter (1831-1885) - buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Oddly enough, she has three headstones sitting side by side.  I can't find any information as to why
she has so many stones.  Like her counterpart above, Jemima, she has one that says "consort" while the others say "wife".  Her third stone, which is likely the first, appears to be much older than the others.
~~~~~~~~~

Here we are in front of the grave of Gardom G. Van Meter.
Born: unknown
Died: October 27, 1823 (1832)

He was the son of Joseph Harrison VanMeter (1792-1887) and Elizabeth Burkham Grundy Van Meter (1800-1832).  He is buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowas, while his mother is buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

He had several siblings:
Infant Daughter Van Meter (?-?) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Jacob Rhodes VanMeter (1824-1910) - buried in Otterman Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Susan Grundy Van Meter Haycraft (1826-1886) - buried in Elizabethtown City Cemetery, Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky
Julius Jackson VanMeter (1829-1894) - buriedin Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Hugo Grotius VanMeter (1831-1885) - buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Joseph Vanmeter (1843-1844) - buried in Treadway Cemetery, Bartholomew County, Indiana

There is some confusion about his headstone as he had two next to each other, with different dates and ages.  It would appear that there was an error and the first stone was made with the wrong date.  One has the death date as 1823 and the other has the date as 1832.  I am unsure as to which is correct, but I would have to think that it is the 1823 since he was an infant and it would fit into the time frame of the siblings.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here we have the grave of Joseph H. Vanmeter.
He was the son of Jacob Vanmeter (1824-1910) and Mary A. Vanmeter (?-1849).  He is buried in Otterman Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa, while she is buried nearby in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.
He had several siblings:
Johnie VanMeter (?-1863) - buried in Otterman Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Jacob R. VanMeter (1864-1884) - buried in Otterman Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa
Carrie VanMeter Dack (1870-1949) - buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Adel, Dallas County, Iowa
Henry Clay Van Meter (1872-1964) - buried in Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, Weslaco, Hidalgo County, Texas
This is the grave of Mary A. Houser Vanmeter.
Born: 1825, Indiana
Died: May 4, 1849
I don't have any information on her parents or any siblings.
She was the wife of Jacob Vanmeter (1824-1910).  They were married on August 11/13, 1844. He was buried in Otterman Cemetery, De Soto, Dallas County, Iowa.
I am unsure if she had any other children.
I found a note that says that she and her children were killed by Indians sometime around 1847.  I would believe that it would probably be 1849 to correlate with the dates on the headstones.
~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Mary Jane Jones Houser.
Born: 1827
Died: May 4, 1857, Missouri

She was the daughter of Judge William S. Jones (1790-1878) and Sallie Nelson Jones (1800-1875).  They are both buried in the same plot at Flatrock Baptist Cemetery.

She was the second wife of Joshua Sims Houser (1822-1899).  They were married on February 10, 1850, when she was only about 16 years old.  His first wife was her older sister, Martha, whose name is on the reverse side of the stone, though I failed to take a photo of it.  He is buried in Knox City Cemetery, Knox City, Knox County, Missouri.

It is listed that they had several children, but I only have the name of one:
Ella Leota Houser Northcutt (1854-1939) - buried in Knox City Cemetery, Knox City, Knox County, Missouri.

We now stop at the grave of Isaac Pancake.
Born: December 23, 1791, Virginia
Died: November 12/4, 1859, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

His first wife was a woman named Micha Lemasters Pancake (?-?).  They were married on October 18, 1821 and were one of the first marriages recorded in Bartholomew County, Indiana.  She must have passed away not long after they were married as I don't see any children for them and he married a second time, shown below.

He was married second to Rhoda S. Patton Pancake (1803-?).  She was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina.  They were married April 3, 1823 in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana.  I haven't yet found where she is buried.

They had several children:
Elizabeth Ann Pancake (1825-1827) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Harriet Jane Pancake (1826-1827) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

Giles Mitchell/Mitchel Pancake (1833-1860) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
James S. Pancake (1834-1870) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Mary Catherine Pancake (1837-1839) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana
Amanda E. Pancake (1838-?) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

Lucinda R. Pancake Miller (1850-1921) - buried in Flatrock Baptist Cemetery, Clifford, Bartholomew County, Indiana

His headstone has some lovely imagery on it.  It shows a woman in mourning at a monument styled grave that is splashed with ivy on one side.  She is either leaning against or holding onto an anchor.  It is a very Victorian styled memorial.

So far the only information that I can find in the War of 1812 roster is for an Isaac Pancake from Ross County, Ohio that was a Captain.  I have also found mention in the pension application from his wife Rhoda that he was in Ohio in Stephen Horsey's Company.  In fact, I found that he came from Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia in the Autumn of 1819 with a young man named Tunis Quick and entered a nearby tract of land becoming Mr. Quick's neighbor.  They each built small log cabins where they ate and slept.  There was a fireplace where they cooked the wild game they bagged and ate the cornbread that they made.

The 1850 census shows Isaac and his family living in Bartholomew County with the following:
Isaac Pancake 59 M Farmer Virginia
Rhoda L. Pancake  27 F North Carolina
Mitchel G. Pancake 17 M Indiana
James S. Pancake 15 M
Amanda E. Pancake 12 F
Marthalena T. Pancake 10 F
Jacob F. Pancake 7 M
Maletha A. Pancake 6 F
Hannah M. Pancake 4 F
Isabella M. Pancake 1 F
Stephen Owens 22 M Laborer
Huston Patton 80 M North Carolina

Since I can find little or no information about Rhoda, but I did find some of her family, I am going to list them here for purposes of keeping the history together.

Rhoda's father was Oughtry Huston/Houston/Hasalan Patton (1772-1862) and her mother was Elizabeth Patton (1771-1848).  They were both born in North Carolina and are buried in the Patton Cemetery in La Porte, La Porte County, Indiana

Rhoda had several siblings:
Jane Patton Spafford (1798-1871) - buried in Long Creek Cemetery, Louisa County, Iowa
James H. Patton (1798-1867) - burial unknown
