Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Mount Salem Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.
This small cemetery has about 90 interments, though there may be more. It is in a terrible state of disrepair and neglect. Many of the stones are broken beyond repair and others are completely illegible. The cemetery itself may be on private property, but I am unsure. There was a small sign, but it was hard to tell if it was referring to the field next to it or to the cemetery. The gate was open and there is a small parking area. No one was around, so I took the opportunity to run in and take a few pictures.
I have been looking for this cemetery since 2015 and have been unable to locate it. As I was driving past, I noticed a chain link fence on one side that was broken and falling down. I remembered seeing this in another picture of the cemetery, so I knew that I must have finally been in the right place. Pulling in and parking was not hard, though I didn't go far as it was rather mushy that day. It started sleeting and the sound of the tiny ice pellets hitting the dead leaves was disconcerting. The entire area was very uncomfortable, as if I could hear the cries for help from those buried there. It is a sad, sad place.
Nearby, possibly in the woods, would have been the Mount Salem Church erected somewhere around 1825. It was a Methodist church, and according to the History of Lawrence and Monroe Counties, by Charles Blanchard, "...was famous in its early days for its revivals of power and attendance from far and near." It was eventually divided and the congregation moved on. What happened to the church itself is not listed. Many of the burials here are said to have been those of workers and families in the nearby limestone quarries, though several were also farmers and the like.
There are 90 listed interments, though there are probably more as there are several depressions and a large area with no visible stones.

We now come to the grave of James Mitchell, Sr..
Born: October 14, 1767, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania
Died: June 9, 1846, Monroe, Adams County, Indiana
He was the son of
Abraham Thomas Mitchell, Sr. (1736-1806) and
Mary Piffits/Piffets Mitchell (1736-1787). They were married in Burlington County, New Jersey on January 1, 1757. He is said to have been buried in the Mitchell Farm which was located near the Guilford County Courthouse. His actual burial site is unknown, though burial on a family farm is not uncommon. Her burial site was probably at the same location, though there is no information for this.
He had twelve siblings:
Issac Mitchell (1757-?) - unknown
Levi Mitchell (1759-1848) - unknown (a note that I have found lists him dying in the Revolution, but this seems inaccurate).
Rebecca Mitchell (1760-?) - unknown
Abraham Mitchell (1761-1856) - buried in the Old Mitchell Burial Ground, Peerless, Lawrence County, Indiana (the stone was removed by a family member and later returned, but then stolen. It is now lost.)

Robert Mitchell (1775-1845) - unknown
Thomas Mitchell (1776-1825) - unknown
Theopilus Mitchell (1777-1782) - unknown (died in the Revolution has been noted on a geneaology but that seems a little odd since he would have only been 5 years old. Then again, these dates may not be right)
Isaac Mitchell (1783-1858) - unknown
Levi Mitchell (1784-1852) - unknown
Robert Mitchell (1786-1856) - unknown
Alexander Wright Mitchell (1787-1853) - buried in Tanksley Cemetery, Lawrence County, Indiana
He was married to
Nancy Jane Campbell Mitchell (1771-1844) in 1791 in Virginia when she was 20 years old. She is buried next to him in Mount Salem Cemetery. It is listed that she died in Monroe City, but that makes little sense as that would be far away from where they were buried.
They are listed as having eleven children:
James Mitchell, Jr. (1793-1860) - unknown
Joseph Mitchell (1794-1861) - buried in Chariton Cemetery, Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa
Elizabeth Mitchell Bails (1796-1833) - unknown

Thomas J. Mitchell (1813-1887) - unknown
Nancy Mitchell Finley (1816-1900) - buried in Smithville Christian Church Cemetery, Smithville, Monroe County, Indiana
~~~~
He we are at the grave of Nancy Jane Campbell Mitchell.
Born: June 25, 1771, Orange County, Virginia
Died: October 10, 1844, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
She was the daughter of
Patrick Campbell (1726-1799) and
Elizabeth James Campbell (1745-1830). They were Irish immigrants. There is a note in a family geneaology that lists Elizabeth's birthplace as Chongping, China, though I am more inclined to believe other notes that say Augusta County, Virginia. She died in Perry County, Kentucky and is noted as having been buried in the Campbell Cemetery, though so far I haven't had any luck locating it or her. He was born in Kilmachrenan, Donegal, Ireland and died in Muhlenburg, Kentucky. I also have not found his burial site.
Her mother is noted as having been a cousin of Jesse James. I haven't found anything to say otherwise.
She had two brothers:
William Campbell (1763-1823) - buried in Campbell's Hill Gravesite, Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky. (it is noted on his headstone that he is a direct descendant of Colin, sixth Duke of Argyle)
David S. Campbell (1773-1853) - buried in Liberty Methodist Cemetery, Mount Tabor, Monroe County, Indiana
She married James Mitchell in 1791 in Virginia when she was 20 years old.
