Hopkins Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Hopkins Cemetery, located in Needmore, Lawrence County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 38.91808, -86.52404

This cemetery is located at the end of Kentucky Hollow Road and Old State Road 37, where it dead ends into a gated off area of a quarry.  Nearby is the what is known as the Bedford Limestone Pyramid.  You can read more about the pyramid here and here.  The Pyramid is located on private property and there are No Trespassing signs, so I do not recommend going though to poke around.  But from what I understand, it is visible from the road, though I didn't see it when we drove out that way.

I am not sure when this cemetery was founded, but there are graves dating back to the early to mid 1800s.  The cemetery is picturesque and located on a hill with graves on all sides, views out over the quarry.  This cemetery is regularly patrolled by the Lawrence County Sheriff, so I have a feeling that unfortunate things happen in the area.  The day that we went, there was a car parked in the only parking spot that quickly pulled away when they saw us.  It was weird, but the atmosphere after they left was fine.

Here we are now at the McLahlan momunemt.

The face of this stone reads:
"McL

Father
and
Mother
McLahlan"

The sides are noted with the names of those buried here.

This side of the stone is for Eliza Jane Miller McLahlan.
Born: 1853 Indiana
Died: May 1, 1926, Oolitic, Lawrence County, Indiana

She was the daughter of David Miller (1827-1863) and Sophia Kinser Miller (1831-1913).  They were married on March 11, 1852 in Monroe County, Indiana, though he was her second husband.  He served in the 93rd Indiana Infantry during the Civil Ware and is buried in Mound City National Park in Mound City, Pulaski County, Illinois.

Jackson Miller (1858-?) - burial unknown
Nancy Miller (1861-) - burial unknown
Samuel Miller (1869-1942) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Clear Creek, Monroe County, Indiana (interestingly enough, he was the son of Sophia Miller, but it is unknown who he father was as he was born several years after her husband died.)
