He served in the Civil War in the 27th Indiana Infantry, Company E, also called the "Washington Greys". He was wounded at Chancellorsville when he took a musket ball to the left heel. He was then wounded at Gettysburg when he took a mini ball in the right hip which was lodged near the spinal column and never extracted. He was discharged from service in Tullahoma, Tennessee on November 21, 1863. His death was believed to be due to some sort of drug.

I have no information about either of these graves. We found them propped up against a tree in the back of the cemetery near the fence line. Floyd's grave almost appears to be a recycled grave from someone with the initials S.C.H.

The Reverend Colonel Elder John Vawter was a distinguished man and very important to the history of Morgantown, Indiana. He was licensed as a Baptist minister in 1804. He moved to Indiana in 1807 with his father and settled in Madison. Here he became first magistrate. Soon afterward he was elected sheriff of Jefferson and Clarke Counties. In 1810, he was appointed United States Marshal for the state and served as a frontier ranger during the Indian Campaign of 1811-1813. In 1817, he was elected Colonel of the militia of Jennings County. It was at this time that he founded Vernon, the county-seat of Jennings County. Here he was pastor of the Baptist Church from 1821-1848, a member of the State Legislature from 1831-1835, and a member of the State Senate in 1836. In 1848, he moved to Morgan county and founded the town of Morgantown, which became his final resting place.

She was the wife of John Allen Vawter (1832-1874). He is buried in Old Baptist Church Cemetery as well.

Francis Day Vawter (1856-1900) - buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Johnson County, Indiana.
Grace Vawter (1865-1866) - buried in Old Baptist Church Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana.
According to her obituary, she was on her way to her sister's home when the harness on her horse broke. This caused the horse to become frightened and she was thrown from the buggy when it bolted. She fell onto a pile of railroad ties and suffered a broken back and skull fractures. She died soon afterward.

This is a mausoleum in the back of the cemetery that is for the Vories-Ragsdale family.
The top of the plaque has the name Reverend John Wade Ragsdale.

Emma M. Ragsdale Vories (1855-1926) - buried in Old Baptist Church Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana. (her name is listed third on the plaque).
Reverend Ragsdale was a very important figure in the community. He was minister of the Baptist church for over sixty years.
