Greenlawn Cemetery

Good Afternoon fellow Cemetery enthusiasts!

Today's Walk through the Tombstones is at the lovely and historic Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.4768982, -86.0597000

This cemetery is located just off of W. South Street in Franklin and filled with so many lovely graves.  There are several examples of Victorian funerary art and two above ground sarcophagi. Greenlawn Cemetery, also known as Franklin Cemetery, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 not only for the lovely graves, but also for the small chapel built in 1878 near the back of the old sections of the cemetery: Pine, Voris and Zeppie.  The chapel now houses the offices of the cemetery.  Next to the chapel, under and awning, is a replica of a canon from 1861 that was made by the Stedman Company.  The actual cannon is at the Indiana State Museum.
This cemetery has just over 18,000 interments on over 30 acres of beautiful green, well-kept land.  Several drives allow access to the cemetery and the two mausoleums.  It is gated and likely closes at sunset.

Our first stop is at the grave of James Allen.
Born: September 1776, Tandragee, Armagh, Ireland
Died: June 10, 1848, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana

He was the son of ?

His wife, Jane Heathwood Allen (1775-1845), is buried next to him in Greenlawn Cemetery.  They were married in 1799 in Tandragee, Armagh, Ireland.

They had several children:
Mary Ann Allen Berryman/Bereman/Berriman (1800-1863) - buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana
John Allen (1802/1810-1833) - buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington County, Indiana (he and his wife died within a few days of each other from cholera)
Alexander Allen (1802/1816-?) - unknown

Sarah Allen McCracken (1800-1866) - buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana
Nancy Maria Allen Finch (1818-1908) - buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana

His occupation is listed as Farmer and Tavernkeeper.  I am not sure where that was located, Ohio, Kentucky or Indiana.  I have found that in 1805 he and his family emigrated to the US, specifically to Kentucky, to claim an estate that was left to them by an Uncle Nathaniel Allen.  A year later they ended up in Ohio and then on to Franklin, Indiana in 1837.

Here we have the monument for the Frame family.

First we have Charles H. Frame.
Born: 1838, Germany
Died: 1895, Johnson County, Indiana

He was the son of Matilda Charity Eckelman (1816-1893).  Her grave is the one at the left of the monument.  She was born in Dresden, Germany.  I am not sure of the name of his father or any siblings.

He was married in 1867 to Sarah Louise Peggs Frame (1843-1909).  She is buried in front of the monument, near the surrounding cement fence.  Unfortunately, I managed to not get her stone in the picture, but I will include her information nonetheless.

She was the daughter of Jacob Peggs (1794-1888) and Martha Wooten Tracy Peggs (1807-1863).    they are both buried nearby in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Sarah had several siblings:

Charles and Sarah had a few children.  They will be listed below.

Charles' headstone is next to Sarah's and, unfortunately, isn't in the picture.

Next is Barnhart "Barney" Frame.
Born: 1882
Died: March 14, 1899, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana

He was the son of Charles H. Frame (1838-1895) and Sarah Louise Peggs Frame (1843-1909).

He is listed as having died of consumption. His stone is just in front of the main monument.

Next is the taller headstone on the right side of the main monument, Frank E. Frame.
Born: unknown
Died: September 28, 1862

I am not sure of his relation as he died before Charles and Sarah were married.

Directly in front of the headstone are three stones that all say INFANT.  There are no dates attached.  I can only assume that they were the children of Charles and Sarah that died in infancy.

The home that he built, the Herriott House, also known as the Brown-Richey House, is still standing in Franklin.  It was built between 1860 and 1865 in the Italianate Style.  A lovely, elaborate wooden porch was added at a later date, probably right after he passed away and was rebuilt in 1981.  It was listed the following year on the National Register of Historic Places.

James Johnson Brice (1820-1870) - unknown

Her second husband was Samuel Herriott (1791-1863).  He is buried next to her in Greenlawn Cemetery.

I haven't found any reference to any children.

I have some concerns about her marriage to Thomas Brice.  The location and the time frame are correct.  I haven't found a date for when she married Samuel Herriott as of yet.  The thing that concerns me is that I have only found one reference where she is listed as being married to Thomas Brice and where they had two children, Alice and James.  But when I dive further into the children, they are linked back to a woman named Phebe Goble.  I am confused.  If anyone has any clarification, please let me know.

We now stop at the grave of William Watson Wick.
Born: February 23, 1796, Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania
Died: May 19, 1868, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana

He was the son of a Presbyterian Minister, Reverend William Wick, Sr. (1768-1814) and Elizabeth McFarland Wick (1791-?).  I am unsure as to where either of them were buried.  A note in William's entry on Wikipedia states that his father was the first minister of the Western Reserve.

William Sr was the son of Lieutenant Lemuel Wick (1743-1813), a lineal descendant of a Pilgrim by the name of John Wickes (1609-1675), and Deborah Lupton Wick (1751-1809).  Lemuel and Deborah are both buried in Southampton Cemetery, Southampton, Suffolk County, New York.  John Wickes had a rather sudden and violent end to his lift.  He had ventured out to search for his cows when he encountered the Pequot and Mohegan Indians who beheaded him and placed his head on a pole near his home.  His head was buried in the Stone Castle Cemetery in Wariwck, Kent County, Rhode Island.  His torso was found the next day and buried with his body.

Deborah was the daughter of Colonel Daniel McFarland (1762-1844).  He was an officer in the Continental Army and is buried in McFarland Cemetery, Bainbridge, Geauga County, Ohio.

He had at least one brother that I have found:
Henry Wick (?-?) -

He was married to Isabella Barber Wick (1825-1875).  They were married in 1839 and she is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota

They had one child that I have found:
Laura Wilhelmina Wick Overstreet (1824-1901) - buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana

William Watson Wick served several roles in the state government.  He was clerk of the House of Representatives in 1820 as well as for the Indiana State Senate in 1821; appointed Judge and served as President Judge of the 5th Judicial Circuit from 1822-1825, 1834-1837 and 1850-1853.  He presided over the trial resulting from the Fall Creek Massacre.  This case was important as it was the first where a white man was hanged from crimes against the Native Indians.  He also served as Secretary of State for Indiana (1825-1829).  In 1838, he was elected to Congress as a Democrat.  When he was not reelected, he returned to his law practice.  You can read more about him here
