Liberty Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Liberty Cemetery in Hendricksville, Greene County, Indiana.

This cemetery is located just off of McVille Road in Hendricksville Road in Greene County, Indiana.  It is a current cemetery with just over 500 interments, including some of my ex-husband's family.  I haven't found a date for when this cemetery was established, though the earliest burial, according to the Cemeteries of Greene County, Indiana list, was 1888.  I have found that the unincorporated community of Hendricksville was established in 1831. The first post office was founded in 1888 but was discontinued in 1921, though I have found conflicting information stating that the post office was established in 1831.  There are many burials in this cemetery with the names of Hendricks and Hendrix. These may have been some of the descendants of the pioneer founders of the town.

I apologize for the strangeness of the layout. With the updates to Blogger, I can no longer find the option to make it single spaced anymore, so the spacing jumps around a bit.

I have found a listing for another Charles Burnham Abram.  He was a private in the Civil War, Co G. 148th Indiana Infantry.  He was born in Greene County, Indiana on January 12, 1832 and died on March 15, 1865 in Indianapolis. His place of residence was listed as Franklin County, Indiana and he mustered into service on February 5, 1865.  He was married to Lucinda Hudson Abram (1833-1919) in 1852.  You can probably see where this is getting rather muddy.  I have found at least three of the children attributed to the above Charles also listed as children of this Charles - Mahala, Oliver and Almira.  Lucinda Hudson Abram is listed as being buried in Hudson Cemetery, Greene County, Indiana along with their daughter Lydia.

We now stop at the grave of David Henry Abram.
Born: June 5, 1840, Hendricksville, Greene County, Indiana
Died: December 22, 1915, Hendricksville, Greene County, Indiana

He was the son of Henry Abram (1813-1883) and Catherine Hendricks Abram (1808-1886).  They are both said to be buried in Liberty Cemetery #2, Hendricksville, Greene County, Indiana.  Unfortunately, there are no headstone left at this tiny cemetery.

Sadie Abram Wilkes (1875-1954) - buried in Dugger Cemetery, Dugger, Sullivan County, Indiana

Abram was in the same company as he was and was killed in Indianapolis only a month and a half after they mustered in.

We now stop at the grave of Emmett B. Abram.
Born: July 20, 1884

There is a memorial flag next to his headstone, but I haven't yet determined what branch of the military he was in or where he may have served.  I would assume WWI, but I am not sure.

She married to Gabriel second.  They were married in 1865 in Indiana, though I don't have any more details than that.  It is also likely that they were cousins, which was a perfectly acceptable practice at the time.

They had a few children:
Henry A. Abram (1870-1892) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Hendricksville, Greene County, Indiana

Here we have the grave of James H. Baker.
Born: March 1, 1848
Died: November 28, 1912

He was the son of John Baker (1822-1896) and Catherine/Cathern Baker (1825-?).  Both were pioneers and are buried nearby in Liberty Cemetery, though she doesn't have a death date on the headstone.

He had a few siblings:

John Baker (?-?) - unknown
Grant Baker (?-?) - unknown
Thomas Gwin (?-?) - unknown (possible in Riverside Cemetery, Spencer, Owen County, Indiana)
Malissa Baker Lane (?-?) - unknown (possibly in Washington Baptist Church Cemetery, Elrod, Ripley County, Indiana

He was married twice.  His first wife was Jamis Vian Burks Baker (?-1874).  I have not been able to locate where she was buried.

They had two children:
Olivia Baker Arthur (?-?) - unknown
Edith Arthur Franke (?-?) - unknown

Next he was married to Hannah Watkins Baker (1851-1933).  She is buried next to him in Liberty Cemetery.

Here we have the grave of John Baker.
Born: January 30, 1822
Died: December 18, 1896

He was married to Catherine/Cathern Baker (1825-?).  Her name is on the opposite side of his on the stone, though she doesn't have a death date carved, so I am unsure of her death date.

They had several children:
James H. Baker (1848-1915) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Hendricksville, Greene County, Indiana
Jackson Baker (?-?) - unknown
John Baker (?-?) - unknown
Grant Baker (?-?) - unknown
Thomas Gwin (?-?) - unknown (possible in Riverside Cemetery, Spencer, Owen County, Indiana)

She was the wife of John Baker (1822-1896). His name is opposite her on the headstone.

Thomas Gwin (?-?) - unknown (possible in Riverside Cemetery, Spencer, Owen County, Indiana)
Malissa Baker Lane (?-?) - unknown (possibly in Washington Baptist Church Cemetery, Elrod, Ripley County, Indiana

I am unsure as to why she doesn't have a date carved into the stone for her death.  She could possibly be buried elsewhere, though I haven't found any reference to another location.

We now stop at the grave of Rachel C. Baker.
Born: August 19, 1842
Died: July 13, 1908

She was married to William A Baker (1850-1907).  His name is carved opposite his on the headstone.

I don't know anything about her family or if they had any children.

Born: July 17, 1850
Died: February 28, 1907

He was married to Rachel C. Baker (1842-1908).  Her name is on the other side of the headstone.

I am not sure how he relates to the other Baker's buried here or if he and Rachel had any children.

He was married twice, first to Minnie Gertrude Ham Burch (1877-1898).  They were married on February 11, 1897. She is buried in Liberty Cemetery near him.  They were only married a year when she died, so it is likely they didn't have any children.

His second wife was Almira Abram Burch (1863-1926).  They were married in 1904 and she is buried near him in Liberty Cemetery.

They had at least one child:

This is another stone for Benjamin Cox, but with a different birth date.
Born: 1865
Died: 1940

I am not sure why there is a different stone with a different date.  I did not notice a different one for Lydia, so I am not sure of the connection here.  It seems to me that it may have been a flat stone that was left when a newer stone was erected.  I am not sure.

We now come to the stone for Horace B. Crews.
Born: June 26, 1869, Indiana
Died: December 17, 1930, Monroe County, Indiana

He was the husband of Hulda K. Burks Crews (1858-1928).  She is buried nearby in Liberty Cemetery.  I believe that she may have also been known as Katie.

Ruby Crews (?-?) - buried in Liberty Cemetery, Hendricksville, Greene County, Indiana
Nellie M. Crews Albertson (1896-1979) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana

Graden/Grayden Curtis Gwin (1899-1971) - buried in Partlow Cemetery, Armstrong, Vermilion County, Illinois

There is another Orien Gwin, but with the middle name Curtis buried in Liberty Cemetery.  He is listed with another mother and father.  It's such an odd name to have more than one burial in the same cemetery.

Her cause of death was listed on the death certificate as labor pneumonia brought on by an abortion.

PERSONAL NOTE:  When I took a photo of this grave, I didn't realize that it is the grave of my ex-husband's great grandmother.  It was kind of a shock to realize this and to be able to relay this information on to him and his mother, as well as letting my daughter, who was there with me that day, know that I had taken a photo of her great-great grandmother's grave.  It's a little surreal.
