Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Stinesville, Monroe County, Indiana.

Early county maps show that the former Mount Carmel church sat on this site. But surely, if this had been a church cemetery, it would be laid out in neat rows. We discovered on June 08, 2015 that this cemetery is a twisty curvy, beautiful oddity. There is a small area to park which makes this cemetery easily accessible. The ground is somewhat hilly which leads me to believe there is a Karst formation in the area. There are are more small sinkholes near the back area of the cemetery. These sinkholes have disturbed some of the graves here.

Our first stop is at the grave of Francis Ashbaugh.

He was married to Nancy Shelburn Ashbaugh (1830-1910). She is buried with him in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

We now come to the grave of James M. Ashbaugh.
Born: December 21, 1840
Died: December 3, 1861
He was the son of Jacob Ashbaugh (1815-1869) and Cassandra Overstreet Ashbaugh (1821-?). I haven't been able to find out where they are buried as of yet.
He had several siblings:

He served in the Civil War in the 38th Indiana Infantry, Company G with his cousin, Joseph Aquila Ashbaugh (1843-1862) who is buried in the Ashbaugh Cemetery in Stinesville, Indiana. James became very ill less than three months into his enlistment. He died from a fever while under the care of William A. Clapp, the surgeon assigned to the 38th Indiana Regiment.

She was the daughter of Francis Ashbaugh (1829-1898) and Nancy Shelburn Ashbaugh (1830-1910). Both are buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

We now come to the Baker Monument. This is one of the first groupings of stones that you will find at Mount Carmel Cemetery. It is in very good condition and is surrounded by a low stone wall. There are several graves just outside of the stone wall of family members and other relations.
The main grave with the beautiful veil draped urn on the top is of the Baker Family.
The first that we will look at is that of Thomas Baker.
Born: November 13, 1847
Died: January 18, 1896
He was married to Mary E. Ashbaugh Baker (1855-1915). Her name is shown on the opposite side of the monument. Their children, Bertha E. Baker (1877-1904) and Francis T. Baker (1874-1874) are also listed on the monument, though it appears that Francis has a separate headstone just outside of the stone wall.
I am unsure as to why there are two memorials to Francis. His name is clearly carved under his father's name on the main monument. It is possible that they just wanted a separate headstone for him because he was on infant. I am not sure. I have also found conflicting dates for his birth. The dates on the monument show that he was born and died in the same year, February 23, to October 10, 1874. There is no birth date on the headstone with his name on it, but I have found at least one place that lists his birth date as being September 23, 1867 and his death date as being October 10, 1874. He was married to Anna Amelia Uhler Cornman (1823-1864). She is buried near him in Mount Carmel Cemetery and his shown to be his third wife.
They had at least one child:

There is a small metal marker with Martin's name and birth and death year on it near the newer headstone. I suppose, therefore, that his original headstone is long since gone.

He was the son of William G. Easton (1826-1894) and Delila Virginia Williams Easton (1836-1909). They are both buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
The inscription on her monument says,
"Gone thou art in youthful sweetness,
Time is short changeful voyage over;
Now thy beauty in completeness,
Blooms on heavens unfading shore,
What to us is life without thee,
Darkness and despair alone;
When with sighs we seek to find thee,
This tomb proclaims that thou art gone."
UPDATE! While doing research into another burial, I have discovered that there is an interesting back story to this person. First, Elsie is actually Elsworth "Elzie" Easton, son of William G. Easton and Delila Virginia "Jennie" Williams Easton. According to a newspaper article from the Bloomington Telephone, dated December 27, 1889, Elzie Easton was a stonecutter for Hoadley & Sons and on Christmas Eve he met a grisly fate. Somewhere around 6pm, Elzie Easton and his friend James Douglas had been drinking in the town of Gosport. After having a good time, they boarded the work train and headed home to nearby Stinesville. Between 6:30pm and 7pm, they entered the saloon owned by George Buskirk. This was a small wooden frame building on the south side of town on the main street. Buskirk and Easton had a few words earlier on and when Easton and his friend entered the saloon, Buskirk immediately ordered them out. When he refused to go, Buskirk grabbed the shotgun from behind the bar and fired. Easton was hit, the top of his completely blown off. Douglas was scared solid and when he begged Buskirk not to shoot, he did anyway, hitting Douglas but not killing him. Buskirk laid down the shotgun, went out the back door and disappeared. He was captured a few weeks later in Knox County and taken in for trial. They found him guilty and fined him $500 for assault. Geoge Buskirk disappears from the news after this.

She was the daughter of Gideon Walker (1775-1851) and Susanna May Walker (1790-1872). They are buried in Walker Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
She had at least one other sibling:
Ware Stokes Walker (1821-1904) - buried in Walker Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Her husband was John E. Farmer (1815-1877). He is buried at Mount Carmel Cemtery as well. I believe that his name is carved on the opposite side.

Here we have the grave of Sarah Robertson Farmer.

Died: August 1, 1846
Her parents were Oliver Mills Robertson (1752-1831) and Sarah Robertson (1755-1785). He is buried in Beech Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. A couple of interesting notes about his grave. In 2010 when the Shelby County, Kentucky, Cemetery Preservation board was cleaning up the cemetery, they did not realize that the pile of stones they were cleaning was a burial area but instead they though they were the steps to the old church that had burnt down in 1944. There is a metal sign that has been erected by family that I found very interesting. It reads,
"Oliver Mills Robertson b. 25 April 1752 VA d. 1831 KY
desc from a crusader knight, Kings Charlemagne, Wm. the Conqueror, Robert "the Bruce", and Price Henry Sinclair, discoverer of America in 1398. Cousin to 15 US Presidents, 4th cousin to Patrick Henry, Ancestor to 1,000s of

His wife, Sarah, was buried in Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Augusta County, Virginia.
She had at least one other sibling:

She has a lovely willow tree carved into the top of her headstone. It symbolizes sadness or mourning.

Her mother was Mary Farmer Williams (1796-1867) and her father was William Park Williams (1795-1846). They were married on April 8, 1821 in Shelby County, Kentucky. Her mother is buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, but I am not sure where her father is buried. It is believed that he may be buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, but it is not certain.
She had several siblings:

He was the only child born to them, but had siblings from his mother's other marriage:

Her parents were Oliver Mills Robertson (1752-1831) and Sarah Robertson (1755-1785). He is buried in Beech Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. A couple of interesting notes about his grave. In 2010 when the Shelby County, Kentucky, Cemetery Preservation board was cleaning up the cemetery, they did not realize that the pile of stones they were cleaning was a burial area but instead they though they were the steps to the old church that had burnt down in 1944. There is a metal sign that has been erected by family that I found very interesting. It reads,

It's a little hard to read, but I believe that this was a newborn girl, the daughter of Willis H. Cox (1849-1932) and Sarah M. Cox (1852-1922).
This is the sibling of John C. Cox (1871-1873) who is also buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

And finally we come to the grave of Nervie J. Wilson. Born: September 22, 1860
Died: June 1, 1862
She was the daughter of Benjamin F. Wilson (1837-1861) and Mary C. Wilson (1833-1863). They are both buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
She had at least one sibling:
Henry F. Wilson (1859-1890) - buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

Anna Uhler and Martin Cornman could not have had a son together named William H. Cornman as listed above unless his birth date is wrong. She would have been 3 years old when he was born. Laura Mitchell, Terre Haute, lmitch1967@ma.rr.com
Hi Laura, Thank you for the clarification. More information about his family has come to light recently and I haven't been able to get back and adjust it. William H. Cornman is Martin Cornman's son with his first or second wife. Anna is his third wife. Once again, thank you for noticing and bringing it to light. Have a nice day!
