Payne Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Payne Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.  It is also known as New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.

This cemetery is located on Old North 37 just outside of Bloomington.  We visited on a cloudy June 6, 2015.  Most of the older graves are in the back left of the cemetery.  Several were in very bad condition and in need of repair.  We found this cemetery mostly by accident since we were just driving up Old North 37.

Our fist stop is at the grave of Weaver F. Hillerman.

Born: March 29, 1882
Died: April 21, 1912

His headstone is a large tree trunk.  At the top of the trunk is an emblem for the Woodmen of the World Memorial.  I have no information on what his actual profession was, unfortunately.

Buried next to him is his wife, Myrtle E. Hillerman (1889-1914).  She also has a Woodmen Memorial carved into the top of her grave.

Here we have the graves of two young sisters.

Rose "Rosie" Pearl Jackson -

Born: October 13, 1914, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: October 22, 1918, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana

and Maudline Gertrude Jackson -

Born: February 13, 1918, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: January 9, 1919, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana

There are lambs carved into the tops of their graves, which symbolizes innocence.

UPDATE:  These are the children of Harry Jackson (1888-1969) and Florida "Flora" Higgins Jackson (1892-1951)

I was forwarded a copy of their obituary.  "The second death in the family within a month was that of the 11-months-old-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jackson Wednesday night at the home on West First Street and funeral Friday at 2:30 from the residence in charge of Rev. Morgan and interment in the Payne Cemetery, north of the city.  A little daughter, age 3, died about three weeks ago.  Bloomington Telephone . 10 January 1919, Page 001"  Thank you, Judy, for the information.

Here we have another child's grave.  That of Robert Walter Sample.

Born: February 18, 1914
Died: May 3, 1915

There is also a lamb carved into the top of his headstone.

Born: 1839
Died: July 6, 1860

UPDATE: She was the daughter of John Jackson (1812-1869) and Sarah "Sallie" Yoder Jackson (1812-1912).  They are buried nearby.

And finally we come to the last grave on our walk today.  This is the grave of an unknown member of the Hinkle family.

Born: October ?
Died: unknown

She was the daughter of G. Hinkle (?-?).  I don't know who this is or where they are buried.

The stone was broken and laying in the ground.   I couldn't move enough off of it to make out the name at the top.
