Gosport Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Gosport Cemetery in Gosport, Indiana.  It is located just off of State Road 67 in the town of Gosport.

We visited this cemetery on September 26, 2015.  I found this to be a nice cemetery with a good mix of older graves and newer ones.  Most of the best, older graves are found near the back of the cemetery.  There are a couple of famous interments located here:  U.S. Army Colonel Benjamin F. Hays (served during the Mexican War, The Civil War and Indiana House of Representatives) and child actress Patsy Doris Dittemore (known as Patsy May in the "Our Gang" shorts).

This is the memorial for Corporal F.W. Craven.

His memorial headstone states that he was a member of Company D of the Missouri Engineers of the West.  After some research, I believe that he was a member of Bissell's Engineers of the West, later known as the First Missouri Engineers.  Their job was to work on railroads, bridges, forts and the like.

Company D was formed from recruits from St. Louis and Flora, Missouri; and Olney, Rushville and Carlyle, Illinois.

I did find mentioned that F.W. Craven was married to Mary S. Craven (1863-1886), but I am not sure if this is the same person, but the time frame could be right.
