Vernal Mayfield Cemetery

On Sunday, April 17th, my daughter and I had the opportunity to participate in a cemetery workday at Vernal Mayfield Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.  It is located just off of Oard Road near the airport.  We tried to find it before, but found that we could not locate it.  The field had been cleared so it was far easier to find this time around.  I took several pictures of the headstones before we got started working so I will share those first.

GPS Coordinates: 39.16691, -86.61912

This is a lovely little cemetery of just around 100 interments.  It is set a few hundred yards off of the road across from a recycling center, not far from the Rogers Quarry.  It is surrounded by a barbed wire fence, so one must be careful visiting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of Bolin Billings.
Born: August 4, 1792
Died: March 26, 1852
There are at least three other Billings buried here in this cemetery, but I am not sure of the family relation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave of Elizabeth Billings.

Born: 1802
Died: November 22, 1871

She is listed as having been the wife of B. Billings.  I am not sure if the B. Billings stated on the headstone is that of Bolin Billings shown above as there is a vast difference in the birth dates.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here we have the grave of Harriet A. Billings Morris.
Born: July 31, 1850
Died: June 1, 1902
She was the daughter of Hannah Jane Mayfield Billings (1826-1902) and John Billings (?-?).  They were married on April 6, 1848 in Monroe County, Indiana.  Her mother's name is listed at the base of the headstone, though her father's is not shown, therefore I am unsure as to where he is buried.
She was the wife of Dilmus Morris (?-?).  I am unsure as to where he is buried.
Hannah, listed at the bottom of the headstone, was the daughter of William Mayfield (1793-1873) and Susannah M. Borally Morris (1793-1932).  Both are buried in Vernal Mayfield Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.
This is the grave of Laura M. Buchanan.
Born: May 16, 1851
Died: March 15, 1875
She was the daughter of John Hamilton Buchanan (1821-1890) and Matilda Sanders Buchanan (1826-1857).  They are both buried in Vernal Mayfield Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.
Their last name on the headstone was incorrectly spelled Buckanan.
The death year is approximate as the headstone is difficult to read.
She was the daughter of John Smith (1777-1847) and Achsah Belcher Smith (1786-1873).  Her father is buried in the Campbell Smith Cemetery in Monroe County but her mother is buried in Vernal Mayfield Cemetery with her.  I seem to recall that her name is on one of the other sides of the monument.
She was married twice.  Her first husband was the Reverend Cornelius Coffey (1812-1852).  Together they had four children.  His buried in Vernal Mayfield Cemetery.  Her name is listed on the opposite side of the monument which was erected by their children.  I did not see a separate headstone for her.
Here we have the grave of James H. Pettus.
Born: 1843
Died: October 8, 1862
He enlisted as a Private in the 22nd Indiana Infantry, Company I, on August 15, 1861.  He was killed in the Battle of Perryville when his company was fired upon by the ranks of Confederate General Polk.
The inscription on the headstone says:
Below him on the headstone is that of Samuel Pettus.
Born: January 16, 1804
Died: September 1, 1885
He was the husband of Martha B. Pettus (1810-1895).  She is also buried in Vernal Mayfield Cemetery.
I believe that Samuel and Martha were James' parents.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is the grave of Mary J. Pettus.

Born: August 3, 1834

Her name is on the opposite side of Martha's grave, therefore I believe that Martha B. Pettus (1810-1895) and Samuel Pettus (1804-1885) are her parents.

That would make James H. Pettus (1843-1862) her brother.

There is a wonderful, long inscription on his headstone:
"A soldier in the Revolutionary War; volunteered in Fairfield County, South Carolina in 1776; served under Gen. Green; Captured at the Battle of Rock Mount but escaped; service ended at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781; afterward lived in North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana; was a Baptist Preacher forty years."

His family were originally Quakers, but switched to being Baptist to fight in the war.  He enlisted in the South Carolina militia under Captains Lewis and Bayliss, as well as General Greene.  The count of his birth has been listed as Perquimans County, North Carolina on other records.

Died: December 11, 1870

She was married to Thomas H. Waggener (1837-1917), though I do not believe that she was his only wife.  I believe that he is buried with his thrid wife at Richland Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.  It is likely that she was his second wife and buried here with her family when she passed away.

They had three children, though I am unsure of their names.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our final stop is at the grave of Charlotte F. Welch.
Born: April 4, 1837
Below her name is that of Mary Pettus.
Born: 1833
Died: October 13, 1860.
I believe that Charlotte may be the daughter of Martha Pettus (1810-1895) and Samuel Pettus (1804-1885), whose names are listed on the other side of the monument.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After I took the above photos, we set to work.  There were several headstones that needed resetting and repairing.  My daughter and I were happy to get working.

 The second headstone in the photo on the left was leaning terribly, sunk half way down into the dirt.  We pulled it out and set it straighter.  On the right, one of the other volunteers is cleaning the base of a stone so that it can be epoxied to the base.

On the left is the headstone of Alonzo Mayfield.  It was buried face down in the dirt.  My daughter and I pulled it out and cleaned it the best that we could.  On the right, my daughter is cleaning the headstone of the Revolutionary War Soldier, Henry Sanders.  The stone is in fine condition though it was lichen covered in many places.

 Here my daughter is happily helping to set get putty read to reset the Pettus monument which had been in danger of sliding off of its base.  One the right, she is cleaning the base for a headstone so that it can be epoxied together.

 Here some of the other volunteers are resetting a larger headstone on a base.  It was tipped over at a great angel and it took much work digging out and setting it right.  On the right, the are preparing to set the monument headstone for the Pettus family.

It takes a lot of work to reset the headstones when they are toppled over.  Many of them weight hundreds of pounds.

                                                                                                              The act of resetting a large monument is hard work.  We used a wench and movable crane to lift the headstones.  It took much work to keep the headstone/monument steady as it was lifted.  Between each block, we added putty to steady it.
