Clinton Falls Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Clinton Falls Cemetery in Clinton Falls, Putnam County, Indiana.

This cemetery has a little over one thousand burials and is a current cemetery with active burials.  When we stopped there, we immediately drove toward the back of the cemetery since that's where the vast majority of the older burials looked to be.  To our surprise, the cemetery wove back into the woods on a little promontory that jutted out into the woods, dropping off on two sides into the woods below.

There were remnants of a bit of a stone wall on one side.  I am not sure if that was part of a wall that surrounded the cemetery that had fallen down into the woods below or if maybe it had been part of some kind of building.  It was hard to tell and it was too dangerous to get that close to the edge.

As I have been doing research on those buried here, I have come to a conclusion.  This particular part of the Clinton Falls Cemetery, is actually a much older cemetery called the Dunkard Cemetery.  The reason for this is that at least two of the Sigler burials below are listed in their obituaries as being buried in the Dunkard Cemetery, their funeral services performed at the Dunkard Church.  It would lead me to believe that the date of 1929 on the arch pictured above is for the newer section of the cemetery which is attached, in name, to the Clinton Falls Church across the road.  It is likely that on the land that is now the Clinton Falls Cemetery, there was the Dunkard Church.  The church lasted until at least 1920, which is the latest date that I found reference to funeral services and a burial.

I did find this bit of information from the Putnam County Historical Museum's blog: "The Clinton Falls Church was first organized as German Baptist, or Dunkard Church in 1862 on land that had been part of the Sigler farm.  The church burned once but was rebuilt."  I also found the church listed on an 1864 map of the area, showing it placed just slightly north of the Sigler property.  I emailed and spoke with the county historian about the church and cemetery and got confirmation that the back part of the cemetery was the Dunkard Cemetery, but also was called the Sigler or Boswell Cemetery.  Thanks to the Putnam County Historical Society's historian for the information.  Visit their website here.

Listed below his name are those of Lorene/Lorraine Clara Cunningham and Ottis M. Cunningham.  Lorene is listed as being buried here, but Ottis is a little confusing.  He is listed on this headstone and also has a headstone in Portland Mills Cemetery in Parke County.  The headstone at Portland Mills Cemetery is noted as his body having been donated to science to help others.  I am not sure which one of these markers is actually a cenotaph, but I am going to assume that it is the one above, though in reality, it is possible that both are cenotaphs.

Here we are at the grave of Anna Peffley Etter.
Born: June 7, 1795, Botetourt County, Virginia
Died: June 1, 1863, Putnam County, Indiana

She was the daughter of David Peffley (1761-1827) and Magdalena Garst Peffley (1763-1829).  They were buried on David Peffley's Farm Cemetery in Cave Spring, Roanoke County, Virginia.  One note states that the headstones for both David and Magdalena were leaning against a hickory tree and are the only stones left from the entire cemetery.  Another note states that the entire cemetery was demolished to widen a road.  It is hard to know which is actually true.  If the headstones are still leaning against a tree, they are probably not in the correct place and the cemetery itself is probably gone.

She had several siblings:
Magdalene Peffley Markey (1783-1854) - buried in Harshbanger Cemetery, Ladoga, Montgomery County, Indiana
Elizabeth Peffley Rettinger (1785-1846) - buried in Brubaker-Huffman Cemetery, Hanging Rock, Roanoke County, Virginia

Mary Peffley Mangus (1800-1875) - buried in Brethren Cemetery, Ladoga, Montgomery County, Indiana
John Peffley (1803-1883) - buried in Harshbanger Cemetery, Ladoga, Montgomery County, Indiana

She was married to Michael Etter (1796-1853) on September 18/21, 1820 in Virginia.  He is buried near her in Clinton Falls Cemetery.

They had several children:
Jacob Etter (1823-1891) - buried in Manhattan Cemetery, Manhattan, Putnam County, Indiana
Saloma Sally Etter Kelly (1826-1848) - buried in Clinton Falls Cemetery, Clinton Falls, Putnam County, Indiana

He was likely the son of William T. Gillum (1828-1905) and Rebecca Sigler Gillum (1832-1894).  They are both buried nearby in Clinton Falls Cemetery.

Lydia Gillum Horn (?-?) - unknown

We stop now at the grave of Mary Gillum.

Bertha Adelya Sigler Brothers (1889-1964) - buried in Clinton Falls Cemetery, Clinton Falls, Putnam County, Indiana

As an interesting note, the obituary from the Greencastle Star Press dated April 13, 1895, he is listed as being buried in the Dunkard Cemetery.  Could it be possible that this back part of the Clinton Falls Cemetery have actually been called the Dunkard Cemetery at the time that he was buried?  There are no Dunkard's buried in the cemetery, though that isn't necessarily the reason for a cemetery's name.  I have found reference to a Dunkard Church in Clinton Township, which is the township where Clinton Falls is located.  Therefore, was there a church on the property called Dunkard that would have been attached to the cemetery?  The arch, you will note in the picture above, is dated 1929, which was the establishment of the Clinton Falls Cemetery and, I think, the church across the road from the cemetery.  I can't confirm any of this speculation, but it makes a good but of sense.
