Laurimore Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Laurimore Cemetery, also known as Old Riverside Cemetery, in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana.

GPS Coordinates: 39.2841450, -86.7690020

This cemetery is actually part of the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, but is signed with a different name, the Laurimore Cemetery.  It is not an active cemetery and was probably the original cemetery that was established in Spencer.  There are just under 300 burials in this section of the cemetery.  No one is really certain how it got the name Laurimore Cemetery as it has never been "officially" known by this name.  A sign was posted somewhere along the way and no one ever wanted to take it down as it has come to be known by this name.  Hopefully, someone will be able to figure it out.

Stephen Douglas "Doug" Kirk (1861-1934) - buried in Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, Ray County, Missouri
Martha "Mattie" Florence Kirk Wood (1865-1939) - buried in Sunny Slope Cemetery, Richmond, Ray County, Missouri

He served in the Civil War in Company H of the 97th Indiana Infantry.  He mustered into service on August 22, 1862 as a Private and mustered out on June 9, 1865 in Washington DC, though I believe that he probably was discharged due to illness as he came home with chronic diarrhea.  His death came a few years later due to paralysis from a fall resulting from weakness because of the diarrhea.

HOW THE ORIGINAL TOWN CEMETERY IN SPENCER CAME TO BE named Laurimore is a total mystery. It was established by commissioners in l833. There are no Laurimores buried there. There was only the Bert Laurimore family, of four people, buried in Riverside Cemetery, all gone since the l930'3. No descendants. I have researched for over 50 years in past newspapers, courthouse records, cemetery records, etc., etc. and can find no documentation for a sign "Laurimore Cemetery" being placed there by township trustee Fred McBride in the l980's? Other older residents, people working in Owen history, and people connected with Riverside Cemetery do not have any evidence of the original Spencer public cemetery being called Laurimore, neither is it "old Riverside," since Riverside Cemetery was not established until l880.

I remember reading this before and I find it so interesting that this part of the cemetery is named differently than the rest of the cemetery. One would have no idea where one begins and another one ends. I do find that small Laurimore Cemetery to be so pretty and tranquil.
