Deckard #1 Family Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at the Deckard #1 Family Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.  It is located inside Eagle Pointe Resort and you will have to have security permission to access this particular cemetery.

We visited this cemetery on the morning of January 17, 2015.  It was a chilly, blustery day, but the sun was shining brightly that morning so it made for a nice little visit.

The cemetery is a very small, family plot with only 22 interments.  The oldest is for Michael Deckard who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.   It is surrounded by a stone wall and has a wrought iron gate at the entrance.  It was a very peaceful place to be.

Next we have the grave of David Deckard.

Born: January 30, 1819, Wythe County, Virginia
Died: August 26, 1907, Lawrence County, Indiana

His headstone is inscribed "88y, 6m, 26d".

The 1850-1860-1870 US Census shows his last name spelled as Deckert.

He lived his life as a farmer in Clear Creek Township, Monroe County, Indiana.

He was married to Nancy Jane Chambers Deckard (1828-1869).  Her name is on the opposite side of the headstone.

Together they had 6 children:
Mary Ann Deckard (?-?) - unknown
Anthony Deckard (?-?) - unknown
Mary Alice Deckard Chambers (1847-1936) - buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Sarah J. Deckard Strain (1853-1941) - buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
John Michael Deckard - (1855-?) - unknown
William F. Deckard (?-?) - unknown
Hugh Stackhouse Deckard (1860-1929) - buried in Deckard #1 Family Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Margaret Susan Deckard (?-1869) - buried in the Deckard #1 Family Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Amanda Ellen Deckard (?-?) - unknown
Nancy Belle Deckard (?-?) - unknown
Minnie Leatla Deckard Luther (1874-1963) - buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

There is conflicting information on the number of children that they had.  The ones listed above are a compilation of two different lists that I found.  I would love to know more about them, if possible.

Here is the grave of Florence Lucas Deckard.

Born: August 6, 1865
Died: July 26, 1895

She was the wife of Hugh Stackhouse Deckard (1860-1929) who is on the opposite side of her stone.

They were married on November 9, 1882.

They had one child:
Elmer Deckard (1884-1950) - buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

Next we have the headstone for Hugh Stackhouse Deckard.

Born: December 18, 1860
Died: 1929

He was married to Florence Lucas Deckard (1895-1895).  After Florence passed away, Hugh remarried to Ann Scott Deckard (1867-1928) on October 1, 1912.

His only child is shown to be:
Elmer Deckard (1884-1950) - buried in Mount Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

His list of siblings seems to be only partial when compared to the ones listed for his parents.  I can't be sure of the names, so I am not going to relist them down here.  If you are interested in the names of the others, please see David Deckard listed above.

His siblings are listed as:
Margaret S Deckard (?-1869)buried in the Deckard #1 Family Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Mary Alice Deckard Chambers (1847-1936)buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Sarah J. Deckard Strain (1853-1941)buried in Clover Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Minnie L. Deckard Luther (1874-1963)buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

These could possibly be graves of some of the children, but it is hard to tell.  They are very worn and I have yet to be able to find any names that correspond to these graves.
