Mt. Gilead Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.  It is located just off of Mt. Gilead Road next to what used to be the Mt. Gilead Church.

There a 1,081 interments listed for this cemetery.  Many of them are marked as being unknown.  I believe that we could 11 of them, but there may have been more.

We visited on January 18, 2015 and I just happened to catch a photo of a train passing along the tracks just behind the cemetery.

First we have the grave of Robert D. Alexander.

Born: June 9, 1800
Died: September 1, 1879

The inscription on his tombstone says, "Age 79y, 2m, 23d".

He was married to Jane Hamilton Dunn Alexander (1822-1883).  She is buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, probably next to him.

I can not find any reference to parents or siblings.

They had six children:
Ann Sophia Alexander Alexander (1826-1914) - buried in Crocker Cemetery, Pulaski County, Missouri.
Mary E. Alexander (1828-1883) - buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

This is the grave for Mary Margaret and Gayle Hinkle.

Born: November 16, 1908
Died: May 2, 1928

Born: 1901
Died: 1923

There is something that looks like either a calla lily or a jack-in-the-pulpit, but I believe that it may be a calla lily which represents beauty.

There is not much information about Gayle, but Mary Margaret's obituary is listed below (unsure of the source):

"DEATH CALLS MISS HINKLE; ILL 4 MONTHS

Their parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Hinkle.  I can't find any reference to either of her parents and I can't be sure about any of the siblings.

She is listed above as having ten siblings:

Here we have the grave of William King.

Born: August 31, 1813, Lincoln County, Kentucky
Died: February 3, 1891, Monroe County, Indiana

He was married to Betsy Clinton King (1821-1886).  Her name looks to be carved on the opposite side of the marker.

His marker is inscribed "13th Kentucky Regiment, Company K".

He had one child:
Thomas Bramlett King (1866-1885) - buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the grave of John J. Lawrence.
Born: 1840
Died: 1935
He was married to Amelia Lawrence (1839-1916).  It looks like her name may be carved on the opposite side of the stone from his.
The inscription on his grave says, "John J. Lawrence 1840-1935 Union Veteran Civil War".
There is a very rusted sign in the ground next to his grave that notes he was a member of the Improved Order of the Red Men - "Freedom Friendship and Charity".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the grave of John A. McBride.

Born: 1845
Died: October 28, 1865

His parents were J & E. McBride.

He was a Union solider that died in the Civil War.  His headstone is shows that he was a member of the 50th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry, Company D.  His rank was Corporal.

Besides the initials of his parents, I can find no further information on them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He we have the grave of Martha R. Alexander Musser.
Born: February 8, 1830, Monroe County, Indiana
Died: March 24, 1900, Monroe County, Indiana
Her gravestone is carved with the name Murser, but all records indicate her last name is Musser.  She married Henry Musser (?-?) on September 13, 1883.
She was the daughter of Robert D. Alexander (1800-1879) and Jane Hamilton Dunn Alexander (1822-1883), both of whom are buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery.  For further information her parents, please see above.
She had 6 siblings:
Ann Sophia Alexander Alexander (1826-1914) - buried in Crocker Cemetery, Pulaski County, Missouri.
Mary E. Alexander (1828-1883) - buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.  Her name is listed on the other side of Martha's headstone.
Here is the grave of Henderson Allen Myers.
Born: January 28, 1814, Cumberland County, Kentucky
Died: March 22, 1876, Monroe County, Indiana
There is an open book symbol on his headstone which most likely symbolizes his faith.
He was married twice.  His first wife was Minerva "Minnie" Coatney Myers (?-1859).  They were married April 28, 1838.  Her burial site is listed as unknown, though there is a photo of her headstone.
Together they had three sons:
Milton Myers (1840-1905) - buried at Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Samuel Myers (?-?)
Jasper Newton Myers (?-?)
His second wife was Rachael Hensley Myers (1813-1891).  They were married April 22, 1860.  She is buried at Richardson/Brummetts Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.  It does not appear that she and Henderson had any children.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

These are two graves of children of the Myers Family.

The standing one says Infant of I.H. and M.A. Myers.

Born: unknown
Died: January 12, 1892

The parents are most likely Isaac H. Myers (1870-1948) and Mary A. Welch Myers (1870-1948).

The grave on the right simply says the Myers Twins with the date of 1921.  There is only one listing for an Infant with the death date of 1921 and that is Edward E. Myers (1921-1921), but it makes no mention of there being a twin.

Here is the grave for Jacob W. Patton.

Born: March 9, 1841
Died: June 8, 1923

And his wife, Sallie Patton.

Born: February 11, 1849
Died: February 7, 1912

I have no further information about this couple.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the grave for Nancy Jo Rogers.
Born: October 13, 1849
Died: November 3, 1862
The inscription on her headstone says,
"Nancy Jo
 Dau. of
 D & L Rogers
 Died
 Nov. 3, 1862
 13yrs. 21 dys.
Beneath this willow weep
a child, a lovely sister sleeps
We know that she is happy
With her angel plumage on
But our hearts are very desolate
 When we think that she is gone"
There is a weeping willow tree carved at the top of her headstone, just under name.  This symbolizes sadness or mourning.
Her father is listed as David H. Rogers (1825-1865).  He is buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery.  I can find no reference as to her mother's name.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 The grave on the left appears to be the grave of a child, but I am not sure of the names or the dates.  The one on the right is the grave for a soldier, probably in the Civil War, but I can't read it.
