Garrison Chapel Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Garrison Chapel Cemetery.  It is located on Garrison Chapel Road in Bloomington, Indiana.

This cemetery was established on February 27, 1933, but there are several older graves up on the hillside in the north side of the cemetery.   We stopped by the cemetery on a drizzly January 25, 2015.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first stop is at the grave of Lucinda J. Brown.
Born: March 27, 1837
Died: September 5, 1865
She was married to Charles M. Brown (?-?) and had one child, Robert R. Brown (?-?).  I am not sure where her husband is buried, but her son is buried at Garrison Chapel Cemetery.
His stone is shown at the left.  It is very worn and hard to read.   It looks like he was born October 19 and died July 27, but the years are hard to read.
Here is the grave for Glenn Fulton.
Born: September 15, 1915
Died: September 15, 1915
There is a dove on the top of the grave which generally symbolizes peace.    It seems that these are usually found on the graves of children.
There is no information on who his parents were.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now we stop at the grave of Charles N. Isom.

Born: 1794, Garrard County, Kentucky
Died:  May 28, 1855, Monroe County, Indiana

Inscription says, "My Daughter Sleeps By My Side".

As for his children, I can only find a listing for his son:
Charles J. Isom (1834-1916) - buried at Garrison Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here we have a children's grave.  There are two names listed:
James W. McHaley:
Born: unknown
Died: August 18, 1848
Mary K. McHaley:
Born: unknown
Died: December 9, 1853
The headstone is hard to read, but it looks as if it says, "Children of L.K. & M. McHaley".
There are only two other McHaleys buried in Garrison Chapel, but neither of them match the initials.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have the grave for Robert and Harwar Rice.

Robert's name is listed on the left side:

Born: 1802
Died: January 9, 1863

Harwar is shown on the right side:

Born: 1806
Died: July 25, 1899

They had six children:
Benjamin W. Rice (1826-1863) - buried in Richland Cemtery, Monroe County, Indiana
John B. Rice (1830-1860) - buried in Garrison Chapel Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana
Thomas Elhane Rice (1832-1905) - buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Mary Elizabeth Rice Brown (1863-1918) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Margaret Ann Rice Fowler - (1839-1910) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.
Nathan Lewis Rice (1841-1907) - buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

This is the marker for Delila McHaley.

Born: unknown
Died: unknown

She was the wife of John I. McHaley (?-?).  I have no information on where he was buried.

It looks like she was 29y, 7m and 2d old when she died, but the stone if broken and hard to read.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These gravestones are all very corroded and hard to read.  The one on the right with the yellow lichen appears to have had a picture or something in it at one time as it has a small indention in the face.
Please let me know if you have any information on any of these graves, or have a photo request.
I hope you have enjoyed your walk through Garrison Chapel Cemetery.
