Bethel Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Bethel Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.  It is located just off of Bethel Lane next to the Bethel Church.

We visited this cemetery on June 6, 2015 as part of my vacation to hunt down as many cemeteries in one week as we could.  This is a picture of the Old Fashioned Bethel Church that is next to the cemetery.  I couldn't find a date for when this cemetery, or the church, was established.

Tragedies that have happened on Brummett's Creek
From the Monday's Dailey - The valley of sudden death, is the ravine made by Baby Creek, the little branch of Brummett's which runs through the Hawley Place.
Five years later Taylor Paul, brother of William Paul of this city, attempted to drive a traction engine and threshing machine down this terrible incline.  'I'll drive it down this hill or to hell,' said Paul with a laugh.  A few minutes later, friends were pulling the mangled body from between the engine and the separator where it had been crushed and the coupling pin broke."

He was also mentioned in Miscellaneous newspaper clippings.  First was in the Bloomington Republican on May 18, 1887:
"Taylor Paul has come back from Kansas to a country where there is timber.  It is trying on the eyes to ride for days over a flat, hot surface without a tree or shrub in sight, and a man who has lived in a country where trees are abundant always longs to be among them again."

Also in the Bloomington Weekly Telephone, August 12, 1892:
"Taylor Paul and daughter Myrtle, attended the Polley-Kelly wedding, as did several others from town.  Among them was a company made up largely from the Bee Hive force.  All were too late to witness the ceremony, but none were too late to climb the hill."

She was the daughter of George Tedrow (1823-1891).  He is buried near her at Bethel Cemetery.

I have no information for who her mother was or any other family members.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 These graves were near the back edge of the cemetery and are not listed in the interment records.  The one on the left is for Susan Wunder with the date 6-4-50 carved under a picture of two cows.  The one on the right is for Charles Gaston with the date 3-23-36 and a picture of bridled horse.  They are column styled monuments and are right next to each other.  I have no information at all on who they were or what their relation may have been.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This grave is for Hannah Vannoy.

Born: unknown
Died: September 10, 1885

The date is taken from the tombstone and is a little hard to make out.  There is no interment listing for her and the only George Vannoy that I can find is buried in Bartholomew County and the New Hope Cemetery, but there are no dates for his birth or death.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 These final graves are all far too worn to be read.  The one here on the left was an interesting shape, hence the reason that I took the picture.  The one on the right had an interesting carving on it, but it didn't seem to come through too well in the picture.  It's a carving of a gate (presumably the gateway to heaven) with vines over top of it.
The left hand grave is an infant's grave, but it was so worn that I could not read it.
The one on the right was buried in some lilies and when I tried to move them, the wind blew them back.
The below grave is that of a Civil War soldier, but it is so lichen covered and worn, that I can not make out who it is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you have any information on any of the above graves, please email me or leave a comment.

I hope that you have enjoyed your walk through Bethel Cemetery.

Please visit the listing at Find-A-Grave.
