T.C. Steele Memorial Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at the T.C. Steele Memorial Cemetery in Belmont, Indiana.   It is located at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site in Brown County.

The above is a picture of T.C. Steele's beautiful home, The House of the Singing Winds.  We visited the historic site on February 7, 2015.  We didn't get a chance to walk through the gardens and trails as it was still very muddy from recent melting snow.  We plan to go back at some point when everything is in full bloom.

You can read more about T.C. Steele and see examples of his paintings here.  Please make sure that if you are ever in the Brown County area, you stop by this beautiful historic site and take the tour of his home. It is lovely.

This is the grave of Theodore Clement Steele.

Born: September 11, 1847, Owen County, Indiana
Died: July 24, 1926, Brown County, Indiana

He was the son of Samuel Steele (?-?) and Harriet Steele (?-?).  I don't have definitive information but I believe that his father is buried in Waveland Methodist Cemetery, Montgomery County, Indiana.

He was married twice.  His first wife was Mary Elizabeth Lakin Steele (1850-1899).  They were married February 14, 1870 in Rushville, Indiana.  She is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Marion County, Indiana.

They had three children:
Rembrandt Theodore Steele (1870-1965) - buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Marion County, Indiana.
Margaret Daisy Steele (1872-?) - unknown
Shirley Lakin Steele (1878-?) - unknown

His second wife was Selma L. Neubacher Steele (1872-1945).  They had no children from their marriage.  She is buried near her husband at the T.C. Steele Memorial Cemetery.
