Green Hill Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford, Indiana.

This is one of the largest cemeteries in Bedford with over 9,000 interments.  It was founded in 1889 and boasts some of the most beautiful monuments and statues in the area.  We visited this cemetery on August 1, 2015, but we didn't have a lot of time to take a look around as it was quite hot that day and there were many other visitors.  We plan to make a re-visit to this cemetery at some point.

Our first stop is at the grave of James Lotito.

Born: February 14, 1922
Died: August 29, 1929

There was a very nice angel child statue on the top of the headstone.  The words "Rest in Jesus" are carved under the dates.  This is one of the first graves that I have seen with an intact photo memorial.  I have head of these as being called Memento Mori at one point, but I can not figure out if that is correct.

Here we have the grave of Guiseppe Capparelli.

Born: January 25, 1890
Died: June 22, 1928

He was married to Sophie Paledino Capparella (?-?).  I am unsure as to where she is buried.

He had at least one child:
Josephine Capparella Mosier (1924-2002) - buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Lawrence County, Indiana.

This is one of the first graves that we have encountered that is in a foreign language.

Our final stop today is at the grave of Ersilla Paolini.

Born: April 2, 1865
Died: June 13, ?

This is a lovely little monument in a very Greek/Roman style.  Inside of the monument, there is a small sarcophagus with a carving of the Paolini crest on it.  This is the first of this kind of grave I have seen in any of the cemeteries that we have visited.  This is the only Paolini that I have found in this cemetery.  Records seem to be sketchy on this particular family name.

The family name dates back as far as the 1400s in Italy, but I am not sure when this name officially shows up in the records of Lawrence County, Indiana.
