Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery located in Mount Tabor, Indiana.  This cemetery is located next to a beautiful white country church established in September of 1831.

GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 39.33202, Longitude: -86.60735
We visited this cemetery on a drizzly June 08, 2015.  It is located off of Liberty Hollow Road and surrounded by beautiful countryside.  In fact, several cows were very interested in our presence.  I am not sure when this cemetery was established, but the oldest burial dates to about the same time that the church was established.

He was the son of Joseph Campbell (1796-1182) and Female Campbell (?-?).  The inscription is worn and hard to read, but his mother's name may have been Mary, though Joseph's wife was Mary Graham Campbell.  She wasn't born until 1822, so this likely is not his mother, or the date belong is wrong.

His death date looks like it might be February 8, 1810, but it is very worn and difficult to make out.

Born: October 22, 1821
Died: May 17, 1880

She was the wife of Reverend Sanford Hector Flood (1819-1812).  He is buried near her at Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery.

The inscription on the headstone says, "wife of Rev S.H. Flood M.D.".  I haven't found any reference to his being a doctor or what church he gave his sermons at, though I have to believe that it would be Liberty Methodist Church since he is buried here.

She was the wife of John H. Thomas (1842-1917).  He is buried near her in Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery.

Died: unknown

The dates on the stone look like 1847 - 1916 and then there is some writing underneath that that looks like he served in the Civil War in the 45th Regiment, but I can not be sure.

This may be the grave of Thomas York, husband of Sarah York.  If so, the birth date may be something more like 1817-1916.

And our last stop on our walk is at the grave of William H. York.

Born: December 21, 1840, New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana
Died: June 11, 1918, Mount Tabor, Monroe County, Indiana

He was the son of Sarah S. York (1819-1895) and Thomas York (?-?).  I know that she is buried in Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery, but I am not sure about him.

He was one of ten children, though I have not found much information about them:
Ludelia A. Davis (1854-1935) - buried in Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

He enlisted in service for Civil War on August 19, 1862 into Company B of the 24th Indiana Infantry.  We was transferred to Company F of the same Regiment and appointed a Corporal of Company B in the 67th Indiana Infantry on January 13, 1863.

He found in many engagements, including, Mumfordsville, Kentucky; Ft. Gibson, Mississippi; Champion Hill, Mississippi; Black River Bridge, Mississippi; and many others.  You can read all about his engagements as well as his obituary here.
