Maple Grove Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana.  It is located at the corner of N. Maple Grove Road by the Grace Way Community Church.

Records show that the land where the cemetery is located was originally purchased in 1826 by Henry Wampler.  His relative, Mary Wampler, is the first recorded burial, though there is rumor that the first burial is actually of a boy who died from a fall.  There is also supposed to be a grave here for Sally Whitsell, an African-American woman, though her headstone has not been found.

Over several years, many different people were buried on this private land next to what had been the "old Wampler school house".  There have actually been two different churches on this land, the old log building North Liberty Church and more recently the Grace Way Community Church, which was originally called the Maple Grove Church.  The cemetery behind the church is surrounded by a lovely stone fence with an iron gate, though part of the fence/wall has been removed to allow more space for burials.  I did notice the day that we were there, June 08, 2015, that some older headstones had been used in the fence wall itself.  This one is for someone with the initials R.W.  I noticed another one that was upside down and was probably a base stone as it had some holes drilled in it.

NOTE:  I believe that the R.W. pictured above is probably actually a foot stone.  It ends up being rather common these days for the foot stones to be removed and discarded as the cemetery starts to fill up.  Also, from listening to some others, if the foot stones are in the way of modern mowers or those that are just there to cut the grass, the stones get tossed to the side.  In this instance, the stone was used to fill in part of the dry rock wall.

Died: June 25, 1918

He was the son of Robert Brough (1848-?) and Kate Dunning Brough (?-?).  His father is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery but I am not sure where his mother is buried.

Charles was listed as being a laborer who entered service on September 19, 1917 in Bloomington, Indiana.  He was sent from there to Camp Taylor, Kentucky where he was assigned to the 151st Infantry, Company C.  He is shown as being transferred to the Automatic Replacement Draft in Camp Shelby, Missouri.  He officially embarked from the United States on June 11, 1918 but died of Appendicitis soon after.  This marker is a family marker to show his service and not his actual burial sight.  He is either buried in France or on Liverpool, England.

Amber - Wonderful photos! Did you happen by chance to take a photo of the headstone for Therese Stine Whisman? She is the daughter of Aaron Stine whose headstone you show in this post. I am also looking for the headstone of Eunice Hightower who may be buried near the Whisman and Stine families. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Sheri! Thanks for stopping by! I do not have a picture for Therese's headstone, but I do hope to get back by there on my vacation this summer. I will make a note and see if I can find her headstone. As for Eunice, I do not find that she is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery. I found a listing that may be her in Rose Hill Cemetery - http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=hightower&GSfn=eunice&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=117636098&df=all&

She was the wife of Joshua Hightower and her daughter Letitia is buried in Maple Grove. Unfortunately, there is no picture of her headstone either. I work very near Rose Hill and can probably stop by to take a look for her headstone if you would like.

Amber I would be very grateful if you could do that! Thank you!

No problem, Sheri! I am happy to do it!

Hi Sheri! We went out to Rose Hill on Saturday, but were unable to locate Eunice's grave. I did learn that her husband, Joshua, and their daughter, Eliza, are buried there as well and that Eunice's grave is unmarked. I will go back as soon as time permits to take a look for Joshua's grave if you would like. I also hope to get out to Maple Grove soon.

Amber - did you have a chance to see about Joshua Hightower and his wife Eunice Lea Hightower? If they do not have a headstone perhaps the cemetery office has a burial record for them? If you can't get to the office would you happen to know how to contact the cemetery? Thank you!

From what research I have on my side, Paris D. Wampler was a male and he was married to Jane Vint. They are listed in the 1850 US Census in Salt Creek Township. To my knowledge the couple did not have any children prior to his passing in 1867 (or at least I am not coming across any).

Thank you, Carol, for the information! I have updated it above. You wouldn't happen to know where Jane is buried, would you? I haven't been able to locate her grave as of yet.

You mentioned a Jane Vint Wampler Houston in this article, when sharing the headstones of some of her family, but I haven't come across her death or burial information.

In regard to Henry Wampler, the father of Paris D. Wampler and other children, and his wife, Maria/Mary "Polly" Kinser. The headstone for her above shares the death year of 1830, not 1843. I have no idea how the 1843 (and sometimes listed as 1844) came about. Henry Wampler's memorial page on Find A Grave has him marrying in 1831 to a "Polly" Armstrong who passed in 1844, which if Maria/Mary passed in 1830 then would have it possible for him to marry a second time (but thus far I have not come across the marriage information for that second marriage thought) to someone who also used the then-popular nickname of Polly (and she is said to passed in 1844).

Hi Carol, I took a look through the marriage records and found that Henry Wampler married Polly on 09-29-1831. I also found a listing for Henry marrying Margaret C. Cowden on 05-31-1855. I don't find anything for 1844. Now, I am not 100% certain that this is the same Henry Wampler, but it is definitely possible. As for Jane Vint Wampler Houston, I am not sure where she is buried. I have only found a listing for her marriage to Paris: Vint, Jane - Wampler, Paris D. 7 Jun 1846.
