New Union Cemetery

Today's Walk Through the Tombstones is at New Union Cemetery, also know as South Union Church Cemetery and Van Buren Cemetery.

We visited this cemetery on June 09, 2015.  There are two different churches at this location, one in a larger building which appears to be a meeting hall of sorts and then the small white church pictured above.  I am not sure when this cemetery was established, but I do know that it is still active.  The older section of the cemetery is up close to the small, white structure.

Our first stop is at the grave of Belle Dearmin.

Born: May 1, 1853
Died: July 25, 1908

She was married to Matthew Dearmin (?-?).  He is buried in Oklahoma according to her tombstone inscription.

 Here is the grave of Farling Duvall.

Born: April 8, 1844
Died: March 23, 1911

I am unsure as to his parents were, but I did find mention of at least two siblings:
Ellas Duvall (?-?) - unknown
Lydia Duvall Kent (?-?) - unknown

He was married to Elizabeth Duvall (1843-1927).  Her name is on the other side of his headstone.

They had at least two children:
John Duvall (?-?) - unknown
Wesley Duvall (?-?) - unknown

He served in the Civil War in the 22nd Indiana Infantry, Company C.  He was also a member of the local branch of the G.A.R.

Here is the grave of Samuel Ferguson.

Born: June 25, 1806
Died: March 15, 1895

There are two stars carved into the top of his headstone.  These usually symbolize the Star of Bethlehem when there is one.  I don't know if having two means anything different.

I did noticed that the "S" on both his first and last name are cavred backward and the "R" are lower case.

Here is the grave of James Hensley.

Born: January 9, 1800
Died: May 17, 1868

His parents were Samuel Grandison Hensley (1769-?) and Sarah Jane Fleming Hensley (1779-1854).  They are both buried in Richardson/Brummetts Creek Cemetery, Monroe County, Indiana.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now we come to the grave of Roma B. May.
Born: 1887
Died: 1913
The inscription on his headstone states,
"He gave his life to save other in the flood at Peru, Ind Mar. 26, 1913".
According to what I have been able to find, a massive tornado outbreak hit the midwest on March 21, 1913 and started a series of devastating storms.  I am not sure if the tornado actually hit Peru but it was definitely a victim of massive flooding.  Approximately 250 people died when the flood waters rose too fast for them to flee.
He was married to Jane Moore (1830-1902).  She is buried with him at New Union Cemetery.  Her name is carved on the other side of the headstone.
Together they had several children:
Theodore Moore (?-?) - unknown
Mrs. George Teague (?-?) - unknown
Oscar Moore (?-?) - unknown
James Moore (?-?) - unknown
Here we have the grave of Nancy Shipman.
Born: June 19, 1844
She was the wife of C.M. Shipman (?-?).
Our final stop today is at the graves of the Wright children.  These three small graves are situated near the fence line and under the shade of a lovely tree.
First we have the grave of Infant Wright.
Died: October 29, 1864
This was the child of L. Wright (?-?) and A. Wright (?-?) and was only 21 days old.
 This grave is that of Tobias Wright.
Born: unknown
Died: April 8, 1862
This was also the child of L. Wright (?-?) and A. Wright (?-?) and was a little over 2 years old.
There is another smaller grave in the middle, but I did not see anything to indicate who this grave was far.   I am unsure as to who the parents were or where they are buried.
